I woke up this morning, and Rusty informed me that his theory had been proven again, and that one of the new bettas was dead. I haven't been sleeping in the bedroom lately, but I have been going back to feed them and look at them, and there had been nothing wrong with any of the bettas. So I went back to see if I could tell why he died, and found all three bettas swimming around and waiting for their breakfast. Called Rusty back to the room and pointed out that the betta was very much alive. It looked dead last night, he said. Good thing he didn't take the "dead" fish out and flush him!

Well, now that I'm in a slightly better mood, I will relay the one good thing that happened over the weekend. Saturday, I went to the petstore in Winchester to pick up a green goldfish for Sandy. Since I was there anyway, I got two new fish for me too - a blue one and an orange ones with black spots. They're so cute! The plan is: I want to buy a bigger tank for the goldfish; something between 33 and 55 gallons. And then, I want to divide the current goldfish tank into three sections for the bettas.

Gah, used fish water tastes NASTY!

Perhaps I should explain that statement. I don't intentionally drink used fish water. But, I have a siphon that I use to clean the bottom of the tank. To get it started, I have to put one end in the tank and then suck on the other end and then put it in the sink before it gets all the way to my mouth. Except, sometimes my timing stinks. :-Þ

Anyway, I got the goldfish tank cleaned and then I did the bettas' tanks. They were NOT amused, and sulked behind their new java ferns. Silly bettas.

Geez, with my little siphon, you scoop water with the big end, fill the entire tubing with water, and then put the big end back under the water and turn it upside down so all of the air bubbles are out, and it automatically starts vacuuming. With my bigger one, you just put it in the tank and push it up and down and it starts siphoning.
From: [info]purple_stardust

Does that work if you don't use a bucket that's much lower? Because I siphon mine into the kitchen sink, which is about the same level.

Cool! I have a Kitty Loaf tee-shirt from Cafe Press. It's a large, and I don't feel it's as large as most larges are, so you might want to get a size larger than normal, to allow for that and shrinkage. There's made by Hane's, if you're familier with their sizes.

I'm also going to design a tee-shirt with the photo that's in my user icon (the blue ratlet) as soon as I figure out a good caption for it. =)

So far, I have mixed feelings about it. I'm not crazy about "using" animals for anything, BUT. For one thing, it shows people how intelligent rats are. And the other thing is, and the thing I'm really torn about, is that if they can make rats into a rescue animal, I think it will go a long way toward improving the bad image that they have. But I really don't know. :\

purple_stardust

The Friday Five is closed for the week, so I picked an archived week at random - March 15, 2002 - and the topic just happened to be animals...

1. What's your favorite animal? Cats, rats, bats. Goldfish and bettas. Golden lion tamarins. Lions and Tigers. Elephants. Manatees and dolphins. Platypuses!

2. What pets have you had in your lifetime? Right now I have 2 dogs, 2 cats, 5 goldfish, 1 catfish, 3 betta fish, and 25+ rats. Ever, including childhood pets, I've had a multitude of cats, a few dogs, fish, ferrets, turtles, a vole, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, mice, a rabbit, a hedgehog, iguanas, a cornsnake, and 3 ball pythons.

3. Is there any specific pet that you've wanted but never had? Not really!

4. Are you allergic to any animals? Rats, ironically.

5. Do you have any 'pet' pet peeves? Dogs that bark a lot, jump on you, eat trash, hump things, scratch excessively, and shed. Cat barf. Rat squabbles at 3am.

I not only have a Fish Plan; I have a Rat Plan too...

First of all, I ultimately want to keep less rats. Part of this will be accomplished naturally because I still have some of my first rescue and petstore rats that are very old now, and when they die, they will not be "replaced".

I also need to stop getting as many new rats. This will be accomplished too, since some of the breeders I got most of my stock from, either no longer breed, or I no longer trust. I am down to 1-2 breeders that I would get rats from.

The third thing I need to do, and this is the hard part, is to stop keeping a couple babies from each litter! This would be a lot easier to do if I would stop breeding marked blues, since I always want to keep "one of each". Unfortunately, this is a self-perpetuating disaster, since the ones I always want to keep for myself are marked blues! Marked blues + marked blues = more marked blues.

Aside from quantity, they need more space in the meantime. To this end, I am going to start using smaller cages for my nursery tanks, and open up the barn tops to my main colonies. This should work out nicely for them.

As for my breeding plan, I think I will breed my siamese Simon (son of Sasha) when he is old enough, and otherwise, concentrate on my blue line. I have Brutus and Beatrix from my first litter, who are wonderful, as well as their parents, Boris and Bella. I also have Bea's sons from her litter to Sandy's Snow. As for outcrosses, I have PS Bleu, who shows great promise so far for health and temperament, and has the best rexing I've ever seen. Since he is from a questionable breeder, however, I will probably wait until he's a bit older. I will also have a new blue masked girl from Rachael, who seems very sweet so far. I would like to stick to straight dumbo crosses from now on, but that would eliminate Boris and Bleu from the gene pool, so I'm not sure how feasible that is right now. I may be able to do it after one litter from Bleu.

Anyway, that's my mental "note to self".

With much "help" from the rats, I finally got the trap door installed on the males' cage and the barn top opened to the main cage. They seem rather amused with their new addition, especially Zippy Zoot! As soon as I figure out how to hang up this stupid hammock, all will be well. I will do the girls' cage a bit later.

So we have the three bettas named George. There is Glorious George, the most beautiful betta in the world. There is Jolly George who looks very festive. And then there is Denim George. Denim George is clearly insane. Denim George is the one who Rusty thought the tank had sacrificed. A day or so later, I caught him playing dead too. Tonight I went in to feed them, and found Denim George laying on his side, UNDER the java fern! Of course, he looked dead, but at this point, I know not to trust Denim George. Sure enough, I lifted the plant a bit, and he swam happily out and ate his dinner like nothing was amiss. I think I should have called him Possum George.

I'll take 'em! I wouldn't mind having a beaver and a duck, too! =D

PS - if they're anything like wild rats, they usually only "attack" when cornered, and they're not aiming for the face and eyes; they're aiming for the light. If a much larger animal (or person) corners them, the light is usually around their neck and head. They're trying to flee.

ARGH! Whilst playing with my girlie rats this morning, I found a small tumour on Mischief! I don't know what to do about it. She'll be two years old in August, and her health seems pretty good as far as myco, but she has gotten that thinner "old lady rat" look, and I don't know if she could withstand the anethesia for tumour removal. I guess I'll take her to the vet and get an opinion, but it worries me either way. Fortunately, her sister Magic is tumour-free so far. My fingers are crossed, as Magic and Mischief are my sweetest girls, and I really don't want to lose them.

This is what I hate about female rats. This is what I hate about breeding rats. Mischief has a tumour now at 20 months old, and what if I had bred her at five months old? Tumours are genetic, but you can't tell if a female is predisposed to them until she is too old to breed. I hate this! Hate it! Hate it! Hate it!

Washington, D.C. — Attempting to fend off further violence from animal rights activists, the U.S. Defense Department today said it will not club baby sea otters as part of its remote-controlled-rat surveillance project, but will instead go back to the original plan and include just the rats.

However, hoping to appease its critics, the Pentagon pledged to go to great lengths to treat the rodents humanely.

"Under our new guidelines, the rats won't be asked to rescue every victim," said spokesman William Longley. "They can just maybe point out the healthy ones. We'll let them eat the others."

Anyway, he's still in recovery now, and I can see him as soon as he wakes up. Fortunately, there is a computer in the waiting room; how cool is that??? Thanks to everyone for their good wishes!

[Current Music |Elvis Costello - She]

Rusty is sleeping, finally. He's doing a lot better today. I, on the other hand, keep bursting into tears for no apparent reason. I can't help but wonder, if it's like this when he's 40, what will it be like in another 20 years, when things really start to fall apart? I have known older couples who's lives and relationships have consisted of a myriad of doctor appointments and procedures and "Barb, when did I have that gall bladder removed?" and when to take what pill... and the thought of slipping into that generation terrifies me.

I'm thinking now, maybe I shouldn't be with anyone. Basically, there are two choices - death or old age, and neither is particularly appealing. I'm not even worried about them so much on a personal level, but I'm fairly sure I can't deal with it. I can't imagine what it is like to watch someone who has been a strong and healthy man, your rock, your protector - slip into some strange withered old shell of incompetance.

I'm just not ready for this, and I don't think I ever will be.

Maybe you aren't ready and maybe you never will be, but, what can you do about it? Give up on every relationship you'll ever have because you are afraid of being left behind by death or illness? You love someone, then you lose them, and I don't think there's any way around that, ever, but at least you get to have a lot of love in between. And I know what you mean about thinking of that, and being terrified. This is just my rationalization of why it's important to keep on loving anyway.

I don't think this is very encouraging, but I'm not really good at encouraging. :) I'm glad Rusty came through the surgery okay, and that he's doing well. I hope that you will feel better soon, too. *hugs*

I think it's totally natural to hate seeing the people you love, sick and in pain and being totally unable to fix it. Frankly, I'd be a little worried if you looked at him and thought, "Oh well, too bad for him," and then went off and did your own thing.

*hugs* again!

It is a scary thought...

but for me the thought of not being with Tauheed at all is worse than the thought of being with him and he's ill. I'll take him bandanged from head to toe and on morphine 24 hours a day rather than NOT be with him. I'd be one of those freaks going to court to keep him on life support, it would kill me to think of him gone out of my life... that's your only alternative. Take him whole or in pieces or not at all... not that it sounds good but what are your alternatives? I'm sure this is just the initial shock of seeing him down and out right now (for the first time I presume) but this experience could even make your relationship all the more deeper for going through it together you know???

Well, Russy seems to be feeling a bit better today. I changed his bandage this afternoon; THAT was an adventure. The surgeon told me what to do yesterday, and part of the instructions was to "pull out the yellow ball" ... of course, I had no idea what the hell she was talking about, or what I was going to be unwrapping. This, of course, led to jokes about what the yellow ball was, and how it was attached, and how, if it was gross, I might have to call a friend to help me pull on his yellow ball. Turns out, it was only made of gauze, but we were amused at the time.

Anyway, I took the yellow ball out and checked the stitches and changed the dressing. It's going to be a pretty big scar, 3-4 inches across, not counting the part that is inside his navel. I keep telling him how chicks dig scars. =)

The mother-in-law called this morning and left a pissy message. Rusty called her back, and I got the distinct impression that she doesn't think I can take care of him properly. She warned him over and over to listen to the doctor, don't overdo it, etcetera, as if I was letting him lift weights or something. It was like he was all alone here. I mean, I've kept three kids from injuring themselves; I think keeping one middle-aged man out of trouble is within my cababilities. Grrr.

You know, that's the saddest thing - I haven't even really WATCHED Enterprise, because I can't get past the damned theme song!

Seven of Nine was awesome; I really liked her character. The rest of the show was okay; it just never took off for me the way the first three did. You know why I think it was? After the first season, it started to be like Gilligan's Island - all the people came and went, why couldn't they ever just hitch a ride out of the Alpha Quadrant?

Deep Space Nine: this was probably my favourie series. I loved Worf, most of all. The characters were so great: Jax, Odo and Quark. I thought at first it would be boring because it was on a space station, but I ended up loving it. My favourite eps were Little Green Men and the tribble remake.

TNG: LOVED this one, too. Patrick Stewart, yum. And I LOVED Commander Data; the exchanges between he and Worf were always hysterical. "I will feed the cat."

TOS: it wasn't the best, but it was funny. Kirk's space bimbos, the banter between Spock and McCoy, the cheesy props... priceless.

I love Star Trek. =)

You are Heavy Metal!

Angry, sad, and disillusioned, you are Heavy Metal. You are the embodiment of the darkness of the human heart. Your main themes are sadness, anger, and hopelessness. You are frequently misunderstood by others and many link you to devil worship. However, those willing to look through the shell of darkness and anger find you to be very intelligant, poetic, and artistic. Too bad your inclination to look for the beauty in darkness and your general attitude of frustration with humanity as a whole tends to send most people running for the nearest exit. But despite that, you wouldn't have it any other way.

Yeah, the brain tumour finally did him in. The thing that irked me was, they kept playing it up - "tonight, Mark Greene says goodbye" ... well first there was the one at the ER, where he treated his last patient, shot his last basketball. Fine. Then the next week, Mark Greene said goodbye again... this time, he wrote a letter to the folks in the ER, and Carter read the letter aloud and posted it, everyone remembered him, very touching, yada yada. Then LAST night, Mark Greene said goodbye AGAIN, and we actually got to see him croak.

Personally, I'm waiting for him to come back from the grave next Thursday and say goodbye again...

Kinda reminds me of Lantz!!! LMAO But really, he was a great character and ER was great last night. I started getting teary when he was listening to the lullaby when he died, and went to see his family and then back to the ER. And when Elizabeth found him and held his hand and kissed it, well....

And all I wanted to do throughout the entire thing was slap Rachel.

Yeah, nice how they all went to the beach while he died, lol.

I kinda like Rachel, and she was cool to put the headphones with the Somewhere Over the Rainbow song on him. And when she let the balloon go, it made me sniffle.

I wish Carter and Abby would get together and adopt Rachel.

You are the Dragon. In medieval Europe, dragons were considered mostly evil and a generally bad omen. Christianity linked the dragon with Satan because of the dragon's snake-like appearance. However, to the Orient cultures, the dragon was a symbol of widom and royalty. It was a benign animal and the fifth creature of the Chinese zodiac. It resided over the east and the sunsrise. It was also said to bring rain and the springtime. The dragon is interesting because it combines all four elements: air, earth, fire, and water. It could fly, had the horns of a ox, breathed fire, and resided over the moon. What mythical beast best represents you? Take the quiz!

Phoenix

I was the Phoenix:

Also known widely as the Fire Bird, the phoenix is a profound symbol of the circle of life. It has a life cycle of 500 to 600 years and after that amount of time, it sets itself on fire and dies in the flames. Then after three days, it rises again from the ashes. It is a completely benign creature who lives in dew. It is said that the phoenix has a beautiful melidous song which grows ever more mournful as its life comes to an end. It is a symbol of the sun and immortality. The phoenix is a very worthwhile beast.

Jamie came over this morning to mow my lawn, how sweet. Then Rusty wanted to take Sarah and the boys to the park. I personally thought that it was kind of soon after the surgery, but he wanted to go, so we did. They had fun, and I got to see baby geese, and then we came home. Then my mom stopped by. She went to a Celtic festival, and she brought me a silver four leaf clover token and two Scottish cakes for me and Rusty. And now I'm dehydrating lemon, lime, and orange slices. I'm not sure what to DO with them, but I think they'll look pretty when they're done.

LMAO! I should have such problems! ;)

So they were just in a jar of plain vegetable oil? Was it meant to be used for anything in particular? I wonder if the lemons and limes would be good in vinegar...?
From: [info]paraxeni

They were just decorative, purely to make your kitchen look more interesting I guess! Lemons would be nice in vinegar though... oh no, I'm turning into Delia Smith! As for the oranges, my fishies eat them. I hang slices in the tank for them and they go mad trying to bite bits off!!

Happy Mothers Day to [info]arkady, [info]artmomz, [info]ayzalove, and [info]laurarn!

I got a beautiful card from Rusty and Sarah, and cards and a flower from the boys. Christopher also gave me a "Mothers Day memo" - the spelling of which was hysterical.

We went to IHOP for a late breakfast, and then made the rounds of the Winchester petstores. I bought more live java ferns for the bettas, and some baby trapdoor snails, one for each tank. We also stopped at Target, where I bought a silly floppy denim hat with the Union Jack on the brim. It was a fun day.

Heh...Mother's day is on a different day in the UK to the US - we've already had our Mother's day. Just as well really, as today when I went to see the kids I was greeted with the news that the girls had misbehaved and gone down to the bottom of the garden, through the gate, to the uncovered swimming pool to look at tadpoles. Their stepmother spotted them right on the edge of the water, and was too scared to yell in case they were startled and fell in. They're not supposed to go through that gate. Oh - and neither girl can swim.

I suspect I may have nightmares about that damned pool tonight....

Don't waste your money on surgery, which is dangerous and painful. Exercise programs are just a fancy way of self masturbation, with questionable results. Penis Pill is simple and effective. If you can swallow a pill, you WILL have a larger cock.

We guarantee, get a larger cock or get your money back!

* Editor's note: Do these people never do market research before they send this crap out? I can even see me, as a female, wanting a hot teenage slut, but I don't think they're ever gonna give me a bigger penis, no matter how many pills I take.

Oh my. We have delved into a whole new realm of fishie madness.

Here is the preface. I bought all of my goldfish at a little shop in Winchester VA. Of the seven goldfish that I've bought there, three have died almost immediately, and a fourth is probably going to soon. First there was Kipper I, which didn't alarm me too much, because my tank was new, and probably hadn't cycled properly. About a week ago, I bought three more fish: Caviar, Sardine, and a green fantail for my friend Sandy. First Caviar gat a clamped dorsal fin and drifted listlessly and died. A couple of days ago, Sandy's fish did the same thing. Now Sardine looks like he's on the way out. My water conditions are perfect. Something is wrong with these fish. The point is, 3/7 (soon to be 4/7) deaths is not good odds. I need a new fish source.

To that end, we ventured out today. We were primarily looking for another green fish for Sandy, but we also wanted to see what was available. We never did find another green one, or even a good source for goldfish, BUT. We DID find three lovely female bettas, which we purchased; a blue one, a red one, and a purple one. Rusty wants to breed them, and I must say, these are REALLY colourful females.

I'm not sure which of my boys would be the lucky stud. George would be the natural choice, as he is by far the prettiest betta in the universe. He has yet to build a bubble nest, however - I think he is too busy flaring at everyone - he even flared at his snail today! George is also lovely, and loves to build elaborate bubble nests. George is sweet, but not spectacular like George and George.

At any rate, it isn't an immediate concern. First we need to figure out how the colours work. We also need to find out how many viable babies occur with each breeding, and we also need to find out if we have an outlet for the majority of the offspring.

From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 5/13/2002 9:42:12 PM

No, I'm about as far from Portland as I could possibly be, and still be in the same country. I found the female bettas at a local (Virginia) feed store; how weird is that?
From: [info]samuraikitty
Date: 5/13/2002 10:35:28 PM

Wow that is wierd. My friend and I looked high and low for female bettas, and in the whole metro area we found ONE pet store that stocks them sometimes. She got one and it died of spite. I'm serious. There was nothing wrong with her physically, the water conditions were superb. She just hated her potential mate, I think.
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 5/13/2002 11:24:44 PM

I've been in relationships where I felt like that.

These are the first females I've found in this area too. Of course, as soon as we'd found these, we went to another store that also had them. The ones at the second store weren't nearly so bright and colourful though; I'm glad that I got the ones I did.

The Petsmart in Sterling is by far The Best I have seen.. plus they have cuuuuute blue orandas there!

I've actually gotten most of my fish at the Sterling Walmart though.. surprisingly enough, they've done well.

I actually found a ... I dunno WHAT he is, but he's not a fantail and he's got the start of an oranda head.. ryukin? I dunno. He was at the Fair Lakes Walmart.. I fell in love with him, he's called LAFS (Love at First Sight).
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 5/13/2002 11:54:25 PM

Really! I am surprised, because the Petsmart in Winchester is pretty shabby. Let me clarify that - my mother says she has had good luck with the tropical fish that she's bought there. However, whenever I look at the goldfish there, it seems like there are a disproprtionate amount that are sick, dead, have swim bladder problems, etcetera. It's good to know that isn't indicative of ALL Petsmarts!

Hmmm, I'm 1.5 hours from Sterling; I may have to run down that way...

Rusty's state tax refund - AKA "the new fish tank fund" - came, so we drove to the bank and deposited that. We stopped at the Winchester VA pet stores to look at fish tanks, and I found the one I want. It's a 50-gallon, but it's really flat and wide, so I will be able to clean it more easily, plus more surface area for the goldfish. It's SO DAMN COOL!!! Wha'! Is your name Renee Renee, or do you go by your middle name?

I am intrigued!
From: [info]purple_stardust

I dropped my first name when I was in my late teens because it was chosen by the paternal unit. I have since used my middle name, Renee. One of these days, I plan to have it legally changed.
From: [info]muridae

Is it difficult to have your name changed? I hear it's not too bad a process...
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 5/17/2002 12:40:40 AM

I don't think it's hard/expensive at all; really, only my contempt of human interaction has kept me from doing it. I have also read that just USING another name consistantly, as long as you have no intent to defraud, will work. Kinda like a common-law name change. :)

I DID IT! I DID IT! I DID IT!

We went out today and bought the 50-gallon tank with the stand, cover, light, gravel, and filter. I also stopped and bought a pretty piece of driftwood and two more bubble wands, one short and one long, to make a bubble corner. And I bought a ton of anacharis and a big gold apple snail. His name is Fred.

I am going to get my ex-husband to help me move things around tomorrow, and start setting it up. I'm so excited!

You'd like Fred. He's pretty big - about one inch - and he is having a field day in the old tank. It sits near a window, which causes mass quantities of algae. I clean it off the front, but not the back and sides, so he's having a feast. I even got to watch him eat! Creepy.

See, that's what I thought too, from the angle of the shoulder, but applesnail.net talked like they were pretty rare in the pet trade, so I discounted the notion. Not like I know a damn thing about snails anyway, lol. I will get the algae pellets, though I have so much anacharis now, it's no big tragedy if Fred eats some.

Woo hoo! I've been most productive today. I tore everything off the large bookcase and the small bookcase, moved the small bookcase into the bedroom, and made a place for it in there. Jamie helped me set up the new aquarium, I started a batch of veggies in the dehydrator, and Rusty and I even managed to fix the tub faucet again so it doesn't leak at all! Now if the landlord comes over to bitch about the high water bill, I can tell him I don't know what he's talking about without a noisy stream of water coming from the bathroom. I still need to clean and dust all my CDs and video tapes and organise them and fit them on the tall bookcase, and start getting the new tank ready, which of course is the fun part.

And I have a new friend! Hello [info]dayoh! :)

We went out to buy more anacharis - we're up to ten bunches in the new tank. While we were there, Rusty found more bettas to buy - a mustard gas ripoff and a purple one with clear fins, and two more females, yellow and green. In case you've lost count, that makes TEN bettas; five males and five females. On a brighter note, he can't say much now about my "freakish carp" since his "puddle fish" now outnumber them.

* Yes, they're still in their cups - they will be moved to bigger homes tomorrow.

I'm such a bonehead. I had the tank almost full, but when I went to put the filter on the back, I found that the setup was too close to the wall, so I had to empty all the water, pull the stand and tank out, level it up, and fill it up again. Keeping in mind now, that the tank weighs 85 pounds empty, plus it had 50 pounds of gravel in it, plus a couple inches of water, on an iron stand... and I was on my own, as Rusty can't lift anything. Anyway, I am pooped, but finally, I think I am done.

I would have if I could have, but we're talking about 600 pounds of water and gravel and tank and stand. I was so pissed. I wasn't alone in my stupidity though. My ex-husband helped me set it up there to begin with, and Rusty sat here and watched us, and it didn't occur to ANY of us that we needed to leave room between the tank and the wall for the damned filter. Sheesh.

The guy sold us the wrong size glass canopy, so we went this morning to exchange it for the right size. I also bought some tubifex, some Hikari Bio-Gold for goldfish, and more plants. I now have 20 bunches of anacharis, 3 money plants (I think that's what they were called), and a swordtail plant. I'm going to set all that up in a few minutes. And Rusty got two more betta tanks and another betta book.

Oh! I also bought some algae wafers for Fred T. Snail - how much should I give him per day, Ilea? They're Hikari brand, if that matters.

So. I moved Fred T. Snail into the new tank and gave him half of an algae pellet, since the tank has no natural algae yet. He was munching away until Simon came along and knocked Fred over and stole the algae pellet! I gave Fred another pellet, and stood there with my hand in the water to guard him and his dinner from the goldfish. Rusty suggested that I get a small glass dish to cover Fred while he eats. You are a dreamer. Constantly filling your mind with fantasies, you withdraw inside yourself in order to experience these more clearly. You dislike people and the distractions they cause. You are eccentric and lack a firm grasp on reality. You experience a wide range of emotions, and can often times be dangerous to yourself and others. You need to focus more on the real world.

The following is a letter read by Claire Braz-Valentine, the author, at this
year's "In Celebration of the Muse", Cabrillo College. It is worth knowing
that the author is a woman of 60+ years, conservatively dressed and
obviously quite talented.

AN OPEN LETTER TO JOHN ASHCROFT, ATTORNEY GENERAL OF THE UNITED STATES

On January 28, 2002, Attorney General John Ashcroft announced that he spent
$8,000 of taxpayer's money for drapes to cover up the exposed breast of The
Spirit of Justice, an 18 ft aluminum statue of a woman that stands in the
Department of Justice's Hall of Justice.

John, John, John, you've got your priorities all wrong. While men fly
airplanes into skyscrapers, dive bomb the pentagon, while they stick
explosives into their shoes, and then book a seat right next to us, while
they hide knives in their luggage, steal kids on school buses, take little
girls from their beds at night, drive trucks into our state capital
buildings, while our president calls dangerous men all over the world
evildoers and devils, while we live in the threat of biological warfare,
nuclear destruction, annihilation, you are out buying yardage to save
Americans from the appalling alarming, abominable aluminum alloy of evil,
that terrible ten foot tin tittie. You might not be able to find Bin Laden,
but you sure as hell found the hooter in the hall of justice.

It's not that we aren't grateful. But while we were begging the women of
Afghanistan to not cover up their faces, you are begging your staff members
to just cover up that nipple, to save the American people from that
monstrous metal mammary. How can we ever thank you?

So, in your office every morning, in your secret prayer meeting, while an
American woman is sexually assaulted every 6 seconds, while anthrax floats
around the post office and settles in the chest of senior citizens, you've
got another chest on your mind. While American sons arrive home in body bags
and heat seeking missiles fly around a foreign country looking for any warm
body, you think of another body. And you pray for the biggest bra in the
world. John, you see that breast on the Spirit of Justice in the spirit of
your own inhibited sexuality. And when we women see our grandmothers, our
mothers, our daughters, our granddaughters, our sisters, ourselves, when we
women see that statue, the Spirit of Justice, we see the spirit of strength,
the spirit of survival. Every day we view innocent bodies dragged out of
rubble, and women and children laid out like thin limp dolls and baptized
into death as collateral damage, and we see the hollow-eyed Afghani mother
whose milk has dried up underneath her burka in famine, in shame, and her
children are dead at her breast. While you look at that breast, John, that
jug on the Spirit of Justice, and deal with your thoughts of lust and sex
and nakedness, we see it as a testimony to motherhood. You see it as a tit.

It's not the money it cost. It's the message you send. We've got the right
to live in freedom. We've got the right to cheat Americans out of millions
of dollars and then just not want to tell Congress about it. We've got the
right to drop bombs, night and day, on a small country that has no army, no
navy, no military at all, because we've got the right to bear arms. But we
just better not even think about the right to bare breasts. So now John, you
can be photographed while you stand there and talk about guns and bombs and
poisons without that breast appearing over your right shoulder, without that
bodacious bosom bothering you and we just wanted to tell you in the spirit
of justice, in the spirit of truth, John, there is still one very big boob
left standing there in that picture.

Claire Braz-Valentine

A study in London showed that the kind of "male face" a woman finds attractive can differ depending on where a woman is in her menstrual cycle.

For instance, if she is ovulating she is attracted to men with rugged, masculine features, and if she is menstruating she is more prone to be attracted to a man with a heavy pair of scissors shoved in his forehead.

As I recall, Josephine greeted me from your shoulder as well.

Ooh, I either get a nice blurb for my website, or I get to kick someone in the head - either way, it's coolness!

I usually keep pairs of ratlets in a carrier, but if I am delivering a single baby, like Josephine, or this little girl yesterday, I usually worry that they'll be lonely, so I let them hang out with me. I don't do it with pairs, as TWO baby rats running around the car would be mayhem. :)

The Friday Five - Dreams 5/24/2002 9:14:00 AM

purple_stardust

1. What's the last vivid dream that you remember having? One that I remember was when I was at a beachhouse, smoking a huge hooka with the guys from Motley Crue. I went back to my room for a while, and found that one of my rats had given birth to a lot of babies, mostly purple berks and purple hoodeds. When I looked, I found that the rat who was producing all these babies was none other than my big boy Mason. I went downstairs, where there was a small bookstore and a water fountain, and there were platypi (also purple) playing in the water fountain. Analyze THAT, Cayce.

2. Do you have any recurring dreams? No.

3. What's the scariest nightmare you've ever had? When I went to an amusement park with Jennie Garth (BH 90210) and had a miscarraige in the public restroom.

4. Have you ever written your dreams down or considered it? Why or why not? I thought about it when I was studying psych, but I never really pursued it. I remember dreams very rarely, so I would forget to write them down by the time I had one that I remembered. I write particularly interesting ones in my LJ now, but that's it.

5. Have you ever had a lucid dream? What did you do in it? To some degree, but none of the really interesting ones, and I can't control them, like some people can.

1. What's the last vivid dream that you remember having?

The last vivid dream I remember having is a dream where I was going to the hospital with my DH to have a c-section. When we got there the doctors were all busy performing other sections so they set us up in a L&D room to wait. I was having ctx but told DH not to tell the nurse. I ended up giving birth right there with DH by my side and when a nurse walked back in to get us she was floored LOL

2. Do you have any recurring dreams? Not the exact same dream no but I have had about 6 dreams where I'm always giving birth alone with just DH.

3. What's the scariest nightmare you've ever had? This is funny. I had a nightmare recently that isn't my MOST scary dream but it was really scary and the one I can remember all the details. This man was after me. I was running from him and climbing over fences trying to get away. Everytime I would run into someone's house and try to hide he would end up killing the people who were in the house so I had no where to run w/out jepordizing someone else. I jumped over this chain link fence and there was this tiny swimming pool back there with like 50 black people standing arm to arm in the pool. No one was swimming, no one was talking they were just standing there. I told them I needed help and saw the guy jump over the fence after me. I ran and hid under their lawn table and they pulled him and and drowned him. What's funny is the guy was Ray Romano from Everybody Loves Raymond LOLOL

4. Have you ever written your dreams down or considered it? Why or why not? No, only one time I did that and I never did find out the entire meaning. Now I just email Melissa and ask her to interpret them.

5. Have you ever had a lucid dream? What did you do in it? Not that I can remember but I have had some really bizarre ones so I may have at one point in time.

We delivered two baby boys from the Brutus x Bella litter this morning. We met the woman at the Petco in Manassas VA, so I went in afterward to look at their fish. Their goldfish selection was small and sickly, and I was NOT impressed. I bought some Quick Cure to have on hand for ick, and Biozyme and some food for the aquarium plants.

I also picked up a cool little booklet though; it is a free directory, like they make auto trader and real estate books, but for pets. It lists pet stores, pet services, rescue groups, veterinarians, and pet-friendly apartments in the Northern Virginia area. How cool is that! I wish every area had something like this.

Anyway, we drove home through Leesburg VA, which is a cool little town. We stopped at a pet strore there too - Pets, Etc - they had some HUGE orandas, which I drooled over. They also had the coolest mini-reef tank set up; that's my next aquarium goal. I didn't like the way they kept their rats though, so we left.

And then we stopped at Long John Silvers and came home and now we're here. Yay.

I finally beat Baramos last night - yay me! I got my jester and one sage killed in the process, which was bad because then they didn't get the copious amounts of experience that my hero and other sage did, but it couldn't be helped. I'm thinking about trying it again, and see if I can defeat him with them still alive. I didn't get the Baramos metal anyway, so maybe I would if I did it again. I dunno.

Just when I think I'm doing something good...

"Like other animals, fish feel pain and experience fear. Dr. Donald Broom, animal welfare advisor to the British government, says, “Anatomically, physiologically, and biologically, the pain system in fish is virtually the same as in birds and mammals.” When dragged from the ocean depths, fish undergo excruciating decompression—often the intense internal pressure ruptures their swimbladders, pops out their eyes, and pushes their stomachs through their mouths. Then they’re tossed onboard, where many slowly suffocate or are crushed to death. Others are still alive when their throats and bellies are cut open."

From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 5/26/2002 5:11:05 PM

No, it isn't bad, and it could really help as far as how often you need to change the water - you just want to make sure that the filter doesn't make the water really bubbley or turbulant, as bettas prefer calm water. :)
From: [info]samuraikitty

Um, I don't think it would be a very good idea for me to drive and meet you, because that would require me taking my car on the highway, and the car's been having acceleration problems lately. So I don't like driving it anywhere. Maybe I can give you very thorough directions to my house, or something.

Well we can figure it out, I'll get on AIM soon and we can figure it out.

Okay. I need to get off and order dinner here in a bit, but otherwise, I'll be on all evening.

It's almost 1AM, and we have to drive to Philadelphia tomorrow. I sent Rusty to bed earlier, but now he's back out here, complaining that he's cold. Apparantly the blanket is not sufficient, despite the fact that it's NOT COLD here. Anyway, I guess I have to go to bed now, and keep him warm. Good grief.

I know for a fact that YOU WERE COLD!!!

Now, he's a big guy so I think that he would be less likely to be cold than you, but you were STILL COLD. =P

(I bet it was all just a big excuse for him to get cuddly wife action, anyway. =) )

Yeah, but I was cold because I had just gotten out of the shower and our hot water heater needs to be turned up! HE was cold because he didn't want to sleep by himself! When I went back he was all, "you're way over there" ... it's a twin bed, how far away could I possibly BE???

I have arrived home from Philadelphia. Will post more later.

Okay. So yesterday, we drove to Philadelphia PA. It was a nice drive; we went through Baltimore MD and up I-95. We stopped in Havre De Grace MD for lunch, and since we were there, stopped to visit the Chesapeake Bay. It was lovely as ever, and we saw a cool old lighthouse and boats and seagulls. I love seagulls. I had to go wading (of course!) and gather up a few small white rocks to boil for my fish tank.

Then we continued on to Philly, where first we met [info]driftwood and her family - all very cool people - and deposited Tucker, a blue dumbo ratlet. I also got to meet her rats - Miles and Nigel are every bit as big and squishy and adorable "in person" as they are in pictures. I even met her floppy ferrets!

Next, we stopped to see [info]muridae and [info]strikingminors, and we all went out for water ice, which Rusty and I had never tried. Yummy! We went to a pet store, but didn't buy anything and then drove around Philly for a while before starting home.

We didn't get back until about 1:30AM - for some reason, the drive home took a lot longer than the drive up. When we got here, I found my calico goldfish Herring had died. He had been very lethargic, so I wasn't surprised. This morning, I moved the three remaining goldfish (Sterling, Simon, and Garfunkel) back into the old tank, until I can figure out (hopefully!) what is wrong with the new tank. I hope I don't lose Garfunkel; he's been acting very listless, even in the old cycled tank. Bah.

Thanks. You know, it wouldn't be so bad if I had ANY FREAKING CLUE what was wrong with them, or if the water was awful. At least then I could try to FIX things. But the water isn't bad and they don't have obvious parasites or disease, they're just... dying. For no good reason. :(

Damn those fish sound like a lot of work! Cleaning tanks, moving fish, putting plants in, checking on sick fish... how do you do it? Way more work than my lazy ass can manage LOL

Rusty is still playing Dragon Warrior 7, trying to get to Dharma Temple, hooray! Gotta love class changes. And I have to go to the store and pay bills. Yuck.

Argh! While fiddling with my earring this afternoon, I noticed that I lost one of the gold hoops that I wear in my lobes. Dammit! They're not valuable, but I'd had those earrings since I was sixteen. Worst of all, I have no idea WHEN I lost them, so I don't know if they're in Philadelphia or Maryland or under my bed. :(

In fishy news, Garfunkel's fin is still clamped, but he seems a bit more active. I really, really, really hope he'll be okay. I finally caught the silly catfish, and moved him to the small tank too, and now I will drain this tank and refill it and salt it and hope like hell that it fixes whatever the problem is. Bleh.

Hmm, I took a very quick look at your ears and I don't remember seeing a gold hoop, but I barely paid attention at all. If I see it around here, I will know it is yours.

It might come back. I had a beloved pin that fell off my bag while I was in a movie theater. We searched the theater and the parking lot for it, and we never found it. Several weeks later, it fell out of the cuff of my jeans.

It could happen!

Thanks... it's a really tiny gold hoop. My parents bought them for me, and since I wasn't even allowed to have my ears pierced until I was 16, needless to say, their choices in jewelry were very discreet. Of course, I can't think of anything I was doing at your house that would pull one out - unless it a rat did it - but it seems more likely that I lost it while cleaning them or changing clothes or something. *sigh*

Well, I am Quite Distraught. I really need to start thinking about a new computer; this one is old and slow and craps out regularly. But - I would really REALLY like to get a Mac instead of a PC this time. I found a Dell Dimension and a G3 iMac that are comparable computers, and of the two, I would MUCH prefer the iMac. The problem is, all of my software is for Windows, and I have some really cool software. Most of it could be replaced for a Mac, but there are a few apps (like Breeder's Assistant) that have no Mac version. My friend Sandy says there is a program that "pretends" to be Windows so that you can run Windows apps on a Mac, but it is $200 and I don't know that it would even really work without causing problems. If anyone has any insight, I would love to hear it. I really want a Mac. Waaah.

Well, I've got a Titanium Powerbook running OS X, and I adore it, so I'm biased.

Virtual PC is supposed to work really well, but I don't know if there's an OS X version out there, and you should really use OS X if you can. Also, I'd probably try to get a G4 machine, not a G3; G3s are low-end and will be obsolete faster.

The real question is what works best for _you_, not what an OS-advocate or whatever will tell you. If you really need PC-based programs and don't want to spend too much money, get a decent low-end PC. They're less expensive, and you can often custom-build them for cheap (like at cyberpowerpc.com).
From: [info]artmomz
Date: 5/31/2002 6:35:42 PM

Yes, I am totally biased too. and
Yes, there is an osx version...but it is actually faster to run it in classic for some reason.

FYI--They came out with an updater a couple of days ago, but for some reason that slowed the program down in both classic and osx. (So if you do get it, I wouldn't suggest the 5.0.3 update. It screwed the sharing folders feature for classic, when it was working just fine on the last update. http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=1006&db=mac)

Virtual PC...

Connectix Virtual PC (http://www.connectix.com). I was using it on my mac just this morning. It works well with programs that aren't graphic intensive...like games. Although I do play an occasional kiddie game on it...like I have a copy of a game called Petz and it does okay. I mostly use it for converting problem files that may have been sent my way by opening them up in their native habitat and then resaving them to something more mac friendly.

This evening I started tearing down the aquarium. I took all the water out and cleaned the inside walls. The plants are now living in a bucket, and I found five baby snails so far, one of them a rams horn snail, hooray. Unforunately, Sterling ATE one of the smaller ones when I put it into the other tank.

I also cleaned the yucky betta tanks. Goldfish are the dirtiest fish around, my ass. Whoever made that up, obviously didn't have bettas.

And now I'm tired and hot and so I plan to sit here and eat Papa Johns cheesesticks and conquer Rome via Caesar III. I couldn't do that if I had a Mac, so I guess that's some consolation. And yet, I still want a Mac.

You are eee-vil.

Actually, I think this is part of the reason I want one. Every Windows-user I knows bitches and complains about their computer constantly - and with good reason, I might add - but everyone I've ever talked to with a Mac loves their Mac. I wanna be an artsy-fartsy Mac-user, dammit! /whine

So, are you familier with both? I'm wondering how comparable a G3 Mac is to a Dell Dimension 4500 with a 1.8GHz processor and 256mb RAM as far as speed. I know the Dell has a larger processor, but I thought I heard once that Macs were faster by nature.
From: [info]artmomz
Date: 5/31/2002 11:07:18 PM

Mac users are obsessed with their computers. I have fallen asleep with mine (my ibook) on more than one occassion...like it's a teddy bear or something. Just holding it brings me comfort. Heck, there is even a mac lust magazine called MacAddict! (http://www.macaddict.com)

At school, we have one lone Dell among a room full of macs. I have no idea what kind it is...but it is brand spankin' new. I tinker on it from time to time when trying to help out a student. It seems just as speedy as the macs...so I don't see much difference there. And quite often, there are both mac/windows versions of most programs. (Although, there are still some developers out there that still shun macs...may they burn in h...whoops, got carried away again
The G3's in our lab do quite nicely along side our G4's. I prefer the G4's, but a high speed G3 isn't too bad. I go back and forth now between my flat screen 700MHz G4 imac and my 466MHz G3 ibook. I probably wouldn't go any lower than 500 MHz on a G3, if I found myself in the market for one. I know that the apple.com store is still selling the 500-600 MHz G3 imacs. Adding more ram makes quite a difference too.
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 6/1/2002 11:23:54 AM

That's what I was looking at; a 600 MHz G3 at apple.com. In fact, the specs are:

iMac 600MHz
256MB SDRAM - 1 DIMM
40GB Ultra ATA drive
CD-RW drive
Rage 128 Ultra
56K / FW / VGA / KB
Mac OS X - U.S. English
Keyboard

I really really really want it. *sigh*

Yes. Someone in high school brought a shock machine and stuck it on this guy's nipples during lunch once. It was hilarious.

112. Used auto-erotic strangulations? WHAT?!?

It's where you strangle your partner with your bare hands or something (like pantyhose) until they black out. It can also be done on ones self with a choke chain, pantyhose, guitar strings (as a former band member of Marilyn Manson once did to himself...)

They're out there...

Lack of oxygen to the brain caused by asphyxiation causes a more intense orgasm. It's fun, but you do have to be able to trust your partner implicitly.

From: [info]instantclarity

My understanding of auto-erotic strangulation is that it is done while mastubarbating (hence the auto- prefix... though it can also be done during traditional sexual contact) and that one's airway is restricted/cut off until the moment of climax. The combination of climax and getting oxygen again greatly enhances the orgasm. No, I haven't done this. Something similar... maybe. ;)

I am truly passionate.

Find your soul type
at kelly.moranweb.com.

You're excited about life and in touch with yourself and nature. Tell me, do I have this straight?

Virtues: You appreciate humor like none other. Puns might even spark laughter in you (TEHY R FUNNI). You seek adventure and connection with your surroundings. You seek friends who will not only share laughs with you but actually form a deep bond of trust and empathy beneath the surface. You look for adventure and courage in people, and variation is necessary to keep you under control. You see yourself as multi-faceted, so you need people who can see you in your many lights. You're constantly trying to figure yourself out while analyzing the people around you. Silly, silly people.

Aspirations: You can't decide what you want to be yet, but you know you want it to be adventures and interesting, with constant changes. You don't know what love will do for you yet, but it's competing with adventure for a place in your heart. An internal conflict has begun: can you be a successful worker, lover, and parent all at once?

Quirks: Noise of any sort is irritating when you're in the mood. Smacking gum, loud chewing, humming- it's about as pleasing as bodily noises. You dislike emaciated people because of jealousy and just plain disgust. You're a procrastinator but a hard worker, too.

Factors: You need constant attention and support. You're high-maintnence, but a great, reliable friend. Nature needs you and you need nature; it's helped thus far, so keep in touch with the outside world.

Future: Who knows! You absolutely need constant change, so vacationing is surely in the cards. Will you settle down or not? Love will find you eventually, as it does to everyone. Will you choose the sweet home life or the rewarding busy-bee life?
