I overslept. No big news there. I need to finish clearing out the garden, but it's SO freaking hot. I should work on Sarah's room now, and do the garden this evening. Unfortunately, I need to take the car to the mechanic this evening. Too much stuff to do, and not enough time. I'll be glad when this miserable week is over.

I'm actually looking forward to Shabbos. I doubt I will go to shul, since I have even more crap to do tomorrow - deal with the landlord and (hopefully) pick up the car, but I have been lighting the candles and studying at home, which is pleasant.

In other news, I joined the Disney DVD Club, and got my first shipment today: Aristocats, Fantasia, and Nightmare Before Christmas. This also means there are three more VHS tapes that can go out to Jamie's. I wonder if the Wallace & Grommit movies are out on DVD yet...?

Well, I'm hot and sick, and between the sweat and the sumac, I'm sure I smell like I just took a dip in the Bog of Eternal Stench, but the garden is mostly cleared. Off to take a shower so I can go drop off this piece of shit Ford - AGAIN.

I hate cars, but not as much as landlords.

The landlord is supposed to come by today and "inspect" the garden. Of course, G-d forbid he should show up in the morning and just get it over with. Oh hell no, he has to drag it out as long as possible. The mechanic seems to be doing the same thing; he still hasn't called about the state of my car or how much it's going to cost.

In fishy news, I gave the goldfish only peas on Tuesday and Wednesday. Yesterday, they got nothing. I don't think I will feed them today either, just for good measure. Garfunkel seemed to be a bit better yesterday, and swimming with more control. Today I see she is back to lazing at the top of the water again. Argh.

Their water seems rather cloudy; I wonder what that's all about. I think I will take the larger rocks and driftwood out tomorrow and vacuum the gravel... I can see underneath the tank that a lot of gunk has settled under the large pieces.

In kitten news, I'm going to throttle this little girl if she doesn't figure out how to use the litter box SOON. I really don't need kitten shit embedded in my carpet.

Also, I feel sick on my stomach. I don't know if it's PMS, the heat, or too much coffee, but I feel really crappy. Literally. I know, TMI.

A few months ago, some rain had accumulated in our wheelbarrow, and I found a dead bird in it. Gross, but not particularly bizzare. Then a few weeks ago, I took all the live plants out of my aquarium, and set them outside in a bucket of water for some natural sunlight. And then I found a dead bird in the bucket. Today, I was outside and I happened to look in Sarah's wading pool, which hasn't been used for a while because of the intense heat. Sure enough, there was a dead bird floating in the wading pool. I don't know what it is about the water around here, but if it does this to birds, I sure as hell don't want to drink it!

No, not really. But the dogs were barking a few minutes ago, and I went out to tell them to shut up, and then I saw what they were barking at... a freaking horse, of all things! This wouldn't be particularly odd, except we're in the middle of town, and the horse was walking around the church parking lot behind our yard! The girl who was sitting on said horse told me what was going on - something that the church was doing - but I was too busy boggling at the horse to listen. Weird.

When was the mating? The average rat pregnancy is 22 days, but I've had a couple that went to 24, and 26 is not unheard of. As long as she's healthy and well, all should be OK. It could just be a case of delayed implantation; sometimes a pregnancy - for one reason or another - doesn't actually get started until a week after the mating, resulting in anywhere up to 30 days gestation.
From: [info]purple_stardust

Try some oatmeal baths, and hydrocortisone cream. If you can take benadryl without passing out (I can't) try that too. Uncontrollable itching is horrendous. If it gets too bad, see your doc for some prednisone (or go to the ER if you don't have a doc.) The last time Tommy has poison ivy, nothing I did worked and I finally called the doc for some help. The prednisone took care of most of it by the next morning. But look out for that steroid high. Tommy was literally spinning in circles while he was one it. He was one HAPPY kid. *whew*

Once at the flea market, this little old Puerto Rican woman was walking around with a giant handful of poison ivy, fanning herself with it. It turns out that they don't have poison ivy in PR, so she didn't know what it was. It was really hot, so she grabbed a handful and used it as a fan. My mom was completely horrified and told her what the plant did, so she tossed it away. Yeesh. I'd hate to be that poor woman the next day.

Eesh, poor woman! =o

I used to be able to handle it - my mother is terribly sensitive to it, so I was always the one yanking it off the house with my bare hands. I was shocked that I got it this time... I told Rusty that it was the first time I'd ever gotten it, and he said, "EVER?"

I don't know if it's a change in my body, or if this is just a particularly nasty strain, or what... but I don't like it.

It IS an evil hell plant!

I went to the post office this morning... it's 30 miles away, which isn't usually a problem, except it's in rural Virginia, and they actually close for lunch. I remembered this halfway there, about fifteen minutes before they closed. I tried to make it there in time - but of course every idiot in the world chose that point to pull out in front of me and drive 45mph. I really hope that my daughter doesn't learn to talk by listening to me in the car - if she does, her first real sentance will be "get out of my way, you fucktard" or something similarly charming.

I made it to the post office five minutes after they closed for lunch, natch. Instead of waiting, I decided to drive back to Winchester to find a Sheetz, where I could get gas and pee. In the meantime, I realised that I was in dire need of a tampon. I think Sarah was one baby too many, because ever since I had her, my hormones have been on overdrive, and my girlie functions are way too ambitious.

I made it to Sheetz and took care of all the aformentioned problems, and then to kill some more time, I decided to see if I could find the Winchester synagogue before my meeting with the rabbi there (in one week, yikes!). I found it easily, much to my delight. It looks from the road to be a lot more modern than the one in Hagerstown.

And then I drove back to the post office, where I picked up the movies that I ordered from Columbia House - Fiddler on the Roof and Cast a Giant Shadow (good Jewish movies), and also To Kill a Mockingbird (which Rusty picked out but I'm not sure why). Hopefully we'll watch one of them tonight.

We stopped at a cheap dollar store on the way home, where I bought a bracelet, pink dress-up shoes, and a purple plastic purse with purple sunglasses for Sarah, and purple bangles and a big bag of purple hair accessories for me.

And now we're home and Sarah is taking a nap and I am having coffee, and I don't have to leave the house again for days, hooray!

Hmmm fucktard huh? That's a new one....I like. Fiddler on the Roof was AWESOME live, but I've actually never seen the movie. To Kill a Mockingbird is a classic, and I watch it everytime I see it on tv. Robert DuVall was so young in that movie. You'll love it. Let me know when you watch it okay?

I saw some short film on IFC the other day, called something like The Dog Hanging Tree?? It was about a Jewish family, the husband in a POW camp and the wife trying to survive with their infant child. It was very interesting and sad. I'll have to look it up and figure out what the title actually was. I watched it at 5:30 in the morning and wasn't quite awake fully.

I took the Max cat to the vet this afternoon. She doesn't think it's cancer, but rather a type of mouth ulcer. She gave him a shot of steroids, and told me to bring him back in 3-4 weeks. If it hasn't improved by then, he gets more steroids, and if that doesn't work, he will have to be biopsied. They also cleaned his ears and gave him Revolution for his chronic ear mites. He is resting comfortably - albeit sullenly - on the sofa after his ordeal. Thanks to everyone for your good thoughts! :)

I also asked Dr Morey if she ever did tumour removals in rats. She said she hasn't yet, but she would like to, but no one wants their pet to be the first one. I told her about Mollie, who is very robust and healthy, and also has a small tumour - I may take her in. She asked me what kind I had, and I said most of mine were fancy colours - blue and fawn, mostly dumbos. She said she loved rats, but hers was just white... my new favourite vet not only likes rats, she actually has one! Hooray!

1. Do you have a car? Yes. A 1990 Ford Taurus POS. It's a stupid bronzey colour and the air condioning needs to be charged. This replaced my beloved 1986 Nissan Maxima, which actually caught on fire.

2. Do you drive very often? A few times per week, around town or to Winchester. Once in a while we take longer road trips, but I usually make Rusty drive. I have a very short attention span, and 30 minutes is about my limit.

3. What's your dream car? I want a purple Volkswagon Thing. I'd also like an older Mercedes sedan. Oooh, or another Peugeot. I had a Peugeot named The Bagel, that I adored. It was like a tank, that car.

4. Have you ever received a ticket? Oh hell yes. Several. Mostly in Virginia and Maryland. I drive way too fast. Fortunately, I am pretty good at weaseling out of tickets, because I should have a lot more.

5. Have you ever been in an accident? Yep. About a month after I got my first car - a 1977 Ford Mustang - I had a head-on collision. There have been other minor ones - a phone pole, a boyfriend - but that was the only one that seriously damaged my car.

A few weeks ago, Jamie and I filled out a pro se divorce package. We were supposed to file the papers last Friday, but Jamie [supposedly] remembered that he had to take his grandfather to the doctor. So we were going to do it this today, but he never showed up at all, and won't answer the phone. Why the stall tactics, dammit? Maybe he just isn't truly ready to put that final close to it. Is it possible he is afraid that things will change between you if he does? Or he still loves you? Being seperated is totally different from being divorced.

[nowhere else to go] 8/10/2002 2:00:00 PM

I went to Walmart this morning... it was a seething pit of evil, as usual.

I bought a purple pillow, some beading thread, a couple DVDs (Stuart Little, Winnie The Pooh, Shawshank Redemption), and three packs of empty DVD cases so I can make my DVD collection all uniform. I can't stand it when they put DVDs in cardboard boxes or those hard plastic CD boxes. I ran into Roscoe as I was coming out of the electronics section, and told him that I needed more fish food.

Also, Dr Morey suggested that I get glass bowls for Max, as he might be allergic to plastic, so I picked up some cobalt blue Corelle dinnerware; two bowls and a plate. The cashier said they were almost too pretty to eat off of, and I told her that I wasn't going to; they were for the cat. Ironically, I was also buying a blue cobalt vase for my mother, so the cashier asked if that was for a centerpiece for the cat.

I need to go out again later, to visit my grandmother in the hospital, and catch up with Roscoe at some point, but for now I am home, hooray!

My Maxx can't eat out of plastic bowls, play with plastic toys, or even kongs. He is very allergic to any form of plastic, and his lips swell to huge size and look all red and raw. I went out and bought him a raised feeder with stainless steel bowls in it, and since then he's been great.

Still no babies, so I guess Beatrix is at the beginning of her pregnancy, not towards the end. Dammit. Well, at least she's pregnant now, and she's had a month of extra hi-fat, hi-protein goodies. This will put the babies within a few days of the Brutus x Blossom litter, but it can't be helped. After these two litters, I am taking a break.

[the plan] 8/12/2002 9:35:00 PM

purple_stardust

I am going to assume that Beatrix got pregnant Saturday (8-10) night, since I saw the plug on Sunday morning. With that reasoning, I put Beatrix back in the main colony this evening. I also put Blossom in with Brutus; no sign of action yet. I will leave them together for one week, then assume that she is pregnant. At that point, I will put Beatrix and Blossom in a maternity cage together with extra prenatal nutrition, to await their babies. Nutrical all around!

I am not sure whether I will separate the girls close to delivery, and keep the two litters in two different cages - or - keep them together, and try to distinguish the litters by size and markings. I will have to think about that part.

In other rat news, I have moved Magic and Mischief back into their own cage, in a last-ditch effort to fatten them up for possible tumour-removal surgery. I don't really think it'll work - skinniness seems to be an inherant condition with age in their line - but they're certainly enjoying my trying! They had mac and cheese this afternoon, and nachos (complete with sour cream) this evening.

Yes, it must be exciting to be on my friends list. I bet you're sooooo glad that you added me. Maybe now you can all chip in and buy me a life...? /me sighs

I'm confused about something, though... do rats not eat their young like hamsters do?
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 8/13/2002 1:54:29 AM

Oh no! Rats are very good parents - the moms will even nurse each other's babies, if needed. The males are great too. I separate males and females at five weeks - the girls stay with their mom and the boys go into a cage with their dad. I have never had a male rat who wasn't good with his sons. Rats are great pets, way better (sweeter and more interactive) than hamsters. :)
From: [info]gypsydance
Date: 8/13/2002 2:27:37 AM

That's actually the bit of irony about hamsters... they eat the young because they're trying to be good parents, and try to protect them by hiding them in their cheek pouches. Sad, really.

My last hamster was interactive. Like... bitingly interactive. I had one good hamster, and the rest pretty much sucked.

I have washed a dress to wear, and now I need to make a list of things I've read about Judaism. He didn't ask me to make a list, but Rabbi Garfunkel did, and I am sure he will ask what I've read, and I will never remember without a list. So I should go make a list.

Also, I recieved Settings of Silver from amazon.com this morning; Rabbi Garfunkel recommended that one, as well as some of my friends. I ordered two other books, but they haven't been shipped yet. At least they went ahead and shipped this part of the order; maybe they actually listened to my tirade after the Alice in Wonderland fiasco. Going to look at my new books now...

I stayed up until 3am, reading Choosing a Jewish Life - what an excellent book! I slept on the sofa, thinking the bed would be too comfortable and I might over-sleep, and this morning Rusty came out and covered me and told me he loved me before he went to work. I fell back asleep until about 9:30 and then got up and took a shower and now I have three hours to go until my meeting with the rabbi, and surprisingly I'm not nearly as nervous as I would normally be.

That book was really very helpful, and reaffirmed a lot of the reasons why I'm doing this, and made me feel a lot more comfortable about my role as a Jew-to-be. Now, if my hair would just look decent, I think I would actually be in a kickass mood. Rar!

I thought of you last night while I was watching the History channel. I was in tears, and furious for all of the Jews that died during WW2. They were showing the rockets that Hitler forced them to build....with little food, water or rest. I hope Hitler is burning in hell until the end of time.

My hair doesn't look good, but it doesn't look as bad as it sometimes does, so I guess that's something. I have a dress and associated items of torture washed and ready to wear. [ambiguity on both sides] 8/14/2002 10:00:00 PM

purple_stardust

My mom drove me to Winchester and watched Sarah while I met with the rabbi. He was okay, I guess. I don't know. He wasn't thrilled with the fact that Rusty wasn't Jewish and didn't plan to be, and said he wouldn't commit to teaching me until he met Rusty and was satisfied that Rusty was comfortable with this. I didn't appreciate that he didn't take my word for it that Rusty was supportive, or implying that I even needed Rusty's approval on this. Yes, it makes things easier, and yes, Rusty IS supportive of my decision, but that doesn't change the fact that I would be doing this with or without his approval.

Other than that, I liked the synagogue okay. It was modern, and not as pretty as B'nai Abraham in Hagerstown MD. No pretty blue stained glass windows with gold stars; no windows at all. The ark wasn't as elaborate either. I don't know if the guy would take me on after he met Rusty or not, but I think I will go back to B'nai Abraham in either case. Rabbi Garfunkel wasn't as proactive as I would like, but she wasn't condescending, either.

After that, we went to a dollar-type store and a craft store, where I spent way too much money on plastic stuff... boxes, buttons, ice cube trays, ice buckets, clear purple notebook covers. Then we stopped at the hospital to see my grandmother, and then came home. Yay, home!

I might be wrong here... but doesn't Judaism discourage inter-faith marriages? That might be why he wanted to meet Rusty. A lot of synagogues won't even perform marriages unless both parties are Jewish. I don't think he was being condescending in asking about it, he's likely just more orthodox than you'd expected.
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 8/14/2002 11:35:54 PM

Yes, they DO discourage inter-faith marraiges, and I respect that - my problem was that he didn't seem to respect that my decision is my own to make, with or without my husband's appoval. He didn't seem so much to disapprove of the inter-marraige, but with whether or not Rusty is okay with this. I even agree that it's important for a spouse to be supportive, but ultimately it is the convert's choice to make. Rabbi Garfunkel said she didn't like to perform inter-faith marraiges, but she didn't seem to have a problem with converts who were already married to non-Jews.
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 8/14/2002 11:42:07 PM

Also, he seemed concerned that at the last minute, Rusty will "rediscover his Christian roots" and not want me to go through with the conversion. The problem that I have with this was that he didn't give me credit for knowing my own husband well enough to know if he would do something like that.
From: [info]cellio
Date: 8/27/2002 11:17:12 AM

In addition to the intermarriage issue, the rabbi might have been concerned about interference from your husband. Not the active, pre-meditated interference that you would presumably know about if it were likely, but the more deep-seated resistance that might not even be visible yet. For example, my husband is Jewish and completely secular. When we talked about getting married I raised a bunch of religion issues and he basically said "no problem". It wasn't until later that we discovered that some of them were problems; we didn't know what signals to look for when we had that initial discussion. (We have, thank God, fixed most of these problems now.) The rabbi has presumably seen this sort of conflict more than any of us have, so he might just want to try to probe for those early. Frankly, I would expect him to want to meet your husband even if Rusty were Jewish; the home environment does affect the convert's progress, after all. Anyway, since he barely knows you and doesn't know Rusty at all, I take his desire to investigate as a sign that he takes his job seriously, not that he distrusts you.

Of course, if you're just plain not comfortable with the rabbi, well, there are plenty of others. Take your time and find the right one for you.

We have all kinds of birthday rats today!

First up, my beloved first dumbos, my little old lady rats, sisters Magic and Mischief, are celebrating their second birthdays today. Mischief is really starting to show her age, though they're still the first girls out of the cage for treats or snuggles.

Also, from my first Ziggabella litter, blue dumbo siblings Brutus and Beatrix turn one year old today. Brutus is celebrating his birthday with Blossom (ooh laa laa!), while Beatrix is with her friends, awaiting the birth of her second litter.

Needless to say, I will be getting appropriate birthday goodies for everyone. :)

[the morning in review] 8/15/2002 2:00:00 PM

It sucked. I went to the bank; that was okay except I thought I was going to pulled over because I passed a cop who was sitting in the median and I looked down and I was doing 75mph in a 55mph zone. Ooops. Oh well, I slowed down and he didn't pull me over, so I panicked for nothing.

On the way home, I stopped at Kmart. I'd bought a new dish drainer - at Kmart, mind you - a few weeks ago, and I wanted to get a new dish pan to match. They had dish drainers in four different colours and three different styles, but not one freaking dish pan. I did buy stuff to make hammocks for the rats, a toy car for Sarah, and a purple chenielle pillow for me. Yay, purple chenielle!

Next, I went to Food Lion. I needed stuff for the rat food mix, as well as cat and dog food, and coffee stuff. They didn't have the right noodles. They didn't have the right cereal. Finally, I wanted sugar in individual packets. They didn't have it. I left the cart sitting there half-full and left the store. I hate this town.

Of course, I still have no dish pan, no rat food, and no groceries. I DO have a headache, however. I think I'm going to go lie down.

Umm. That's a really crappy thing to do. The people who have to put those away aren't the ones who decide what the store sells and what it doesn't. Don't take it out on the peons. They hate the store as much as you do.
From: [info]purple_stardust

Well, in my defense, I was under the influence of a budding migraine at the time. I don't normally do that, and if it had been just one or two or ten items that they didn't have, I probably wouldn't have done it today.

As for taking it out on the peons, I used to be one myself, and I always figured it didn't really matter, I was getting paid no matter what I was doing. It's not like they would get to catch up on their reading or shoot some hoops, were it not for my cart of stuff.

I am dehydrating peppers. Five trays of red, orange, yellow, and green bell peppers, to be exact. Weis had them on sale last night, so I bought a bunch. Some are for the rats' food mix, but I am also going to put some in a nice glass cannister for my mother. I may save some for myself, too. I don't eat peppers, but they're really pretty, and I could always use them to make spaghetti sauce for Rusty this winter.

I made a web page for my goldfish, and that's about it. Now I'm just sitting here, drinking coffee and trying to decide whether I want to try to go to shul this evening.

I don't trust my driving with a severe headache, especially not a 30 minute drive. Instead, I think I will light candles here, and if my head feels better later tonight, do some serious reading.

She pointed out where we were in the Hebrew parts, which was actually helpful... I was starting to recognise the word "baruch" anyway!

I didn't stay for the oneg, but I did ask Rabbi Garfunkel if I could set up another meeting with her, and she said sure, and to give her a call. So I will.

Rusty took the car to work this morning. Somewhere during the night, it appears that these damned kittens knocked the cable off the back of the televion. There's no way I can hold that thing up whilst simultaneously digging behind the entertainment center for the cable, etcetera. This means I am trapped here; with little soda, few cigarettes, and no cable. I guess I should look on the bright side - this is an old house; it could collapse on my head. I doubt I'll get that lucky, though.

In an effort to stave off boredom, I went back to the sofa and slept until noon. And now I am dehydrating the rest of the rat food mix. In other news, the Pittsburgh Steelers are actually winning the football game. And while I like the Steelers in theory, I don't feel like watching football, and I'm bored. I tried playing Vampire: The Masquerade for PC, but it made no sense and I gave up. I would most like to play Caesar III, but then I couldn't switch back and forth between that and Windows, therefore I couldn't obsessively check my email. i was in nyc visiting with some friends, and we met up with some of their friends for dinner in a kosher restuarant in a jewish neighborhood. i had jewish friends in college, so i knew what kosher meant. well an airhead who tagged along with us apparently didn't, or didn't think it was that important-- she asked the waitress for a cheeseburger.

she just didn't get it at all. she had that whole "well i'm not kosher, so gimme a cheeseburger" atttitude. ugh i was embarassed to be seen with her.

Cheese Dishes And Latkes

The custom of eating cheese delicacies on Chanukah was practiced in the fourteenth century but originated in a much older period. Pancakes made with cheese are as old as the story of Chanukah itself, and from this developed the custom of eating latkes (pancakes) of all kinds.

During the Middle Ages, Jews explained this custom by connecting it with the story of Judith which was linked with the story of Chanukah. Judith, according to legend, was a daughter of the Hasmoneans who fed cheese to the leader of the Jewish foes. He became very thirsty and quenched this thirst by drinking wine. When be became drunk, Judith beheaded him and saved her people. For this reason, Jews eat cheese delicacies at Chanukah.

You have to love a religion/culture that gives this much thought to cheese.

As most of you know, I have a lot of holes in my head. Of the elective ones, six are in my ear lobes, and three are in my ear cartilage. Well. I noticed yesterday, I have a cyst behind my left earlobe. I've gotten them before; they're gross but they aren't related to the piercings. However, the piercings don't help, so I have removed all the jewelry from my earlobes. I feel so naked now, plus the cartilage piercings look silly with no jewelry in the lobes. I hope the cyst goes away soon; not only is it grossing me out, but it's messing up my aesthetic balance.

Go on, say it... I'll take 'things I never wanted to know' for one thousand, Alex.

What were they saying about crop circles?

I'm a skeptic myself, but when I was... well, I think I was about 12.... some huge crop circles appeared in these undeveloped business lots mear my house (think: large open fields which are probably now office buildings). I heard about it on the radio and begged my mom to take me and my best friend to see them. She was for it, so we picked the other girl up, and shoved our way through all this tall grass to walk through the big flattened areas. I remember that a guy was there from the Bay Area with some kind of equipment that picked up electrical signals from the ground (or something like that); he let me listen to his headphones, but there wasn't all that much to hear.

I don't care how the circles got there; they were really cool looking and fun to walk around. My friend and I had so much fun, and when we got home we called the radio station and gave them our firsthand account. :)

Oh COOL!!! Well, there was a woman on there who'd written a book (Mysterious Lights And Crop Circles, I think), talking about the theories behind them. She seemed to feel that they were caused by some sort of energy, and that it would be impossible for them to be created by humans. They showed some of the ones in England, and I would have to agree that they're not man-made!

We're watching Greta Von Facelift on Fox News, and they're talking about the controversy surrounding Steve Earle's Jerusalem CD, because of the stance he takes with a song entitled "John Walker's Blues" - about American Taliban member John Walker Linde. People want to boycot the CD because of Earle's apparent sympathy toward American terrorists. The guy played the song on the air, and it should be boycotted... because it's freakin' bad. Nasty bad, like orange-juice-when-you've-just-brushed-your-teeth bad. Blech!

In my ongoing effort to transform Amazon into the most successful internet company ever, I have ordered the following books:

* Choosing Judaism
* How to Run a Traditional Jewish Household
* To Be a Jew: A Guide to Jewish Observance in Contemporary Life
* To Pray As a Jew: A Guide to the Prayer Book and the Synagogue Service
* Living a Jewish Life: Jewish Traditions, Customs, and Values for Today's Families

I think most of them are written from a more conservative perspective than what I'll see in a reform synagogue, but that's a good thing. I would like to strive to be a little more conservative than what is expected in a reform synagogue.

[boring update] 8/21/2002 5:00:00 PM

I did very little today, and all of it was boring... I went over to Roscoe's and picked up some fish food. Got a few neccessities (cigarettes, dog food, cat food) at Sheetz; I was too lazy to stop at the grocery store. I think we have quesadilla stuff here for dinner tonight, if not, I will call for pizza.

I called the school to discuss tuition and orientation days. I'm not thrilled with sending the boys back to Catholic school, but I would feel bad making them go to a new school and leaving their friends. I have exactly three years to find a good public school for Sarah, and a matching address.

And then I came back here and consulted with [info]smarsh97 and [info]rattyluv about whether or not to breed Zippy Zoot, and to whom. He is SO awesome, and so much like my beloved Ziggy Rat, that I really want to breed him. As far as his mate goes, there are two possibilities, ZBR Bailey and RBR Roo. I think I have decided upon Roo, who is a very floppy girl with a perpetual case of wheel tail. Babies will be black marked dumbos, and I am hoping for little black hooded boy!

What else? That's about it. I have to pee.

Kathleen Matthews is the one that freaks me out... I first noticed her when they cut into Oprah for a news break, except she didn't seem to know that, and there she sat at the news desk, cheeks sucked in and rubbing frantically at her face, I assume to remove foundation line. Now I notice how she has a tendancy to smile inappropriately, like between a happy human interest story and a tragic accident.

[seething] 8/22/2002 5:15:00 PM

I'm watching ABC News. Apparantly, a landlord in Frederick MD told one of his tenants to get rid of her three cats. When she didn't do it, that redneck motherfucker shot two of the cats with a 12-gauge shotgun. What's more, a judge ruled that this was a "legally acceptable" action.

I hope that fucking bastard dies in the most gruesome car accident ever. I hope he doesn't die immediately, though. I hope he lies on the side of the road for some time, bleeding and in pain, and I hope that when he does finally die, that the last thing he sees is a tom cat taking a piss on him. And I hope that judge is in the car with him.

I live within an hour of Frederick, and if I can think of anything within a reasonable interpretation of the law to make this cocksucker's life a living hell, you can be damned sure I'll do it. Seething doesn't even begin to describe it.

The full story can be seen here.

What he did was awful, but she was told five times to get the cats out, and refused to do it. She's as much to blame as he is. It'd be interesting to see if any charges of animal cruelty are brought against her for putting them in that position in the first place.

Personally, I'd have just thrown her out. But, then, I'm meaner to people than I am to animals. :P

I understand that he told her (though it's only his word as to how many times) to get rid of them, but I think the acceptable solution would have been to evict her, not kill the cats. Yes, she should have gotten rid of the cats or found another place to live, but I doubt she expected this. :(

2. The season opened last weekend.
3. They taste just like chicken.
4. They hate beer, pickup trucks, country music and Jesus.
5. They don't like barbeque.

[outside] 8/24/2002 6:30:00 PM

Rusty cannot afford to work on the weekends, because when he does, I go out shopping with my mother and spend way more money than he makes.

So we went to Canal Days in Williamsport MD today. I bought a pole and three garden flags - a cat on a pumpkin, a Hanukah tree, and a cardinal flag for Rusty. I also got a beautiful pewter dragon who cost way too much but looks really cool on my monitor. And Sarah had her first pony ride! So cute.

And it was hot and sunny and I got a headache, and then we went to AC Moore and Borders, where I spent more money... I bought another siddur, a black one, so it matches my copy of the Tanach. My "old" one was poopy brown-coloured; I am going to donate it to the synagogue's library, I guess.

And then we came home. My head still really hurts, and Rusty is watching some stupid western that is way too loud. We battle over the television volume constantly; I can hear, and he is a deaf-as-a-post old man. Makes me nuts. Grrr.

Today I became the mother of a 7th grader. Ugh. I would like to say that I was a little floozy and got knocked up at age 15, but sadly, I was 21 when I had him.

Anyway, the boys are back to school, and I am already pissed off at the school. We were in the office - dropping of the ample tuition money - and that annoying Sister Regina told Steven that single earrings weren't allowed, only pairs. I am SO tempted to yank them out of that school. Not only do I not like the religious emphasis, but I don't like their stupid rules, and I don't like that they use the fact that they're a private school to make and enforce them. Bah.

In other news, Brutus's foot is still very swollen, so he has an appointment with the vet tomorrow morning. I gave him half a baby aspirin; I hope he isn't in a lot of pain.

I can't believe Steven is in 7th grade. Good lord. Seems like yesterday we were pushing Steven and Tommy around WalMart in strollers.

That's cute. I saw a car emblem a long time ago that followed the fish thing, only it was a carrot and inside it said "veggie." If I ever find it again, I'll buy it.

[vet visit] 8/27/2002 1:00:00 PM

I would just like to say I LOVE MY NEW VET!!! Seriously. I would marry her.

First of all, I love where she works. I didn't hear one "ewww, rats" from the staff. The vet tech called him a piddle box after he peed on her (twice), but she didn't seem too appalled. Dr Morey made the appropriate fuss over Brutus, and told him what a sweet and pretty boy he was. She said what I suspected, it's a sprain, and gave him a shot of dexamethasone and said if the swelling wasn't gone in three days, to bring him in for another, at no charge. She even told me exactly how much she was giving him, instead of assuming that I wouldn't know what she was talking about! So now Mr Charming is on steroids.

Since I was there, I gave her printed copies of two websites about rat surgery and a copy of the RMCA drug chart. When I explained that a lot of vets tend to under-dose rats, she seemed to agree, and didn't give me the "you're not a vet so you don't know anything" attitude like my last vet. She even asked me what I fed my rats; she said hers got the Oxbow stuff, but where she used to live, she could buy it in bulk at the store, and now she can only get it online.

Rattie PR: two ladies with cats said he was cool, the receptionist said he was pretty, and as we were leaving, another lady asked me what I had, she said that was neat, she'd never seen one. I didn't take him out and show her though, because she had an irritating little yip-yap dog with her, and I didn't want it to scare my baby boy. He's used to real dogs, but not those little noisey ones.

All in all, a very successful visit!

Is anyone else not receiving comment notices from Live Journal? I'm trying to figure out if LJ is screwed up, or if my mail server is. I'm inclined to think it's Dreamhost, since I'm not getting Yahoo posts either. But then, Yahoo is so often screwed up, it's hard to tell. If it is Dreamhost, I wonder if I will get them eventually, or if they're lost in cyberspace forever... oops! Now I'm getting all the mail at once. Good grief.

[stop yer whining!] 8/27/2002 5:15:00 PM

I'm watching the news, and they just announced that Washington DC will not host the the 2012 Olympics. So now their freakish mayor, who can't seem to open his mouth when he speaks, is whining about how disappointed they all are. Why??? For those of you that aren't familier with DC, the traffic there is hellish in the best of times. The beltway is a nightmare, and driving through the city itself will give you a bleeding ulcer. The last thing they need is zillions of tourists, many from other countries, driving around and adding to the congestion and the madness, and pissing off the already road-raged regulars! Talk about asking for trouble...

I for one, am damn glad we didn't get the Olympics :p Altho' if we did I can tell you when I would've taken a vacation :p

I just think it's such a waste of taxpayer money and that it should go to an area that is already well-equipped to handle the huge influx of people and already has all the atheletic necessities and arenas, ya know?
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 8/27/2002 9:37:03 PM

Oh! I forgot you were around here too! =)

I agree! That city - the whole area, actually - needs so much work, financially. The schools, the hospitals, the huge homeless population - all good things to spend money on. But no, they want the freaking Olympics.

And the road rage and traffic jams and mass confusion it would have caused, boggles the mind. Think about that much added traffic on the beltway, and day and night, not just "rush hour". Imagine about the Metro, and imagine the pissed off locals who aren't getting to work on time because of the gridlock.

I keep picturing Steven King's 'The Stand'... {shudders}

Date: 8/28/2002 7:30:18 AM

Re:

I have to admit I never finished The Stand. I think I may've started it at one point but I didn't finish it :/

Altho' the Olympics could have been a push for the area to improve its mass transit system, because they would have ten years so I do think a lot of improvements that we need now even without the Olympics may have gotten done had we gotten the bid, so it might not have been so bad, but honestly I'd just rather not find out :p

I'm perfectly happy in my mundane li'l world :)

I think I'll write like this today,
Since I am bored and want to play.
If you don't like it, you can say,
But I'll still do it anyway.

I talked all morning to Joell,
Drank too much coffee, feel like hell.
I also talked to my friend Sandy,
Smoked a lot and ate some candy.

Okay, I lied, I did not eat,
But "candy" rhymed, and it is sweet.
Anyway, I washed some dishes,
Played with rats and fed the fishes.

I surfed around the internet,
Looking at cages for my pets.
I read some email, this is true,
I'm way behind, but that's nothing new.

And that's everything that I have done,
What can I say, I am no fun.
I guess I'll go and read a book,
And order pizza, I hate to cook.

Okay, this is what I want you to do. Go to your local Popeye's. Order whatever it is that people order from Popeye's - I don't know what, I don't eat there. You should notice a receptacle of black plastic sporks. Take one. Hell, take two. Since you probably don't share my love of sporks, you can mail them to me! I will also happily accept sporks of other colours. So mail your sporks, new or used, to:

Despite the fact that I just spent $444 on two huge rat cages last October, and said at the time that those were the only rat cages that I would ever need to buy, I told Rusty this evening that I wanted to get rid of them and buy 5-6 Martins R-680s. And he didn't throttle me, even though I wouldn't have blamed him if he did. He just sighed and said okay. He humours me, and I love him. :)

Time to sit on my fat ass and eat and read and play video games. And dream of shiny new rat cages...
