The most productive thing I did today was to make a purple tassle. That's kinda sad. Even more pathetic, I was rather proud of myself for having made a a purple tassle.

Also, I accidentally broke Mr Pushy, my favourite mechanical pencil. Bah.

So that's where my tax dollars went!

The pencil I swiped from my dad is just a regular old-fashioned 5mm black Pentel.

And rumor has it, that one of the first unofficial things a new person in our office learns, is to not touch my pencil. I think that's good advice.

dog grooming

Hi Tara, it's really nice to meet you. Renee has told me a bit about you, and it sounds like we have alot in common. Sometimes the amount Renee and I have in common scares me. lol I'm going to be out of a job in 6 months, and have always been interested in dog grooming, but never had the time to take the course, and I think in NY you have to be certified to become a groomer. I am also in the process of starting up a home-based pet bakery, and am hoping to make some extra cash doing that.

Re: dog grooming

Hi there, sorry I took so long to find and respond to this post, hehe.

I'm not sure how certification works in other states. Here in Oregon, there is no real regulation--feasibly, anyone could become a groomer, but I think that most groomers and grooming salons think it is a good idea to have some kind of certification or apprentice training. I'd be interested if you find out what the policies in your state are!

The first thing that I would recommend is finding a grooming shop to work in as a bather, or even a receptionist or anything to get you around the action. Most places don't requre formal training for bathers, and teach you the basics. (I started at my grooming shop as a part-time receptionist, then eventually learned bathing and light trimming, and now I'm the business manager/apprentice/lackey heheh... I'll be gone for four months next year at grooming school, and then coming back).

That way you know for sure if you like the job before paying thousands for school. I don't doubt that you love dogs and animals, but it's worth checking out some of the other aspects of the job. Personally, I'll tell you that it is the best job; I love it! :)

If you have any questions or anything, feel free to reply here or at my journal. Good luck!

From: [info]purple_stardust

Hildi, ugh. She's really pretty, and I want to like her, but she lost me when she started gluing straw on the walls.
From: [info]closertofine
Date: 10/3/2002 6:14:39 PM

Oh I don't like Doug! If Doug decorates your room and you say "Anything is fine but I hate pink" then your entire room will be pink. My favorite is Vern. And Frank.
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 10/3/2002 6:37:50 PM

Yeah, there is that. Isn't Doug the one that made the lady cry?

I really like Genevieve for taking the interests and priorities of the homeowners into account. She made the coolest table one time; part of it was high for the adults and the other part was real low, for the couple's toddler. She also took one of the kid's fingerpaintings and had it printed on their dishes. I also like what she does with people's photos...
From: [info]muridae
Date: 10/3/2002 6:52:03 PM

Genevieve is my favorite -- she really listens to what the homeowners want and like, and then she designs rooms according to that. Plus, no two rooms ever look alike. If I were on the show, I'd want Genevieve to do my house.

Then I like Vern, because his rooms look very pretty, but at the same time they're basically all the same room.

Hilde is a freak. She glued HAY TO A WALL in a house which had toddlers. And then she glued brown felt to the walls in a house which had five cats. Yeah. Oh. And then there was the time she divided a room up into quadrants, and painted them pink and grey. Including the fireplace. Onto which she glued broken glass.

<shudder>

Laurie comes off as a complete control freak. You can see it! You know she wanted to fly off the handle and scream at the homeowners! Her rooms end up looking pretty, though.

But hands down, no contest, the WORST designer is Doug. He's an asshole, he likes to pick fights, his rooms are completely against anything that the homeowners might want, oh, and then there was the time he went into someone's home, asked what all their junk was, and threw it all in the trash can. He's designed some nice rooms, but ugh, what a jerk.

<kill>

What is it with the designers and their bizarre desire to cover up every window in the room with giant draps, anyway?

Yes. I watch Trading Spaces too much.
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 10/3/2002 7:05:16 PM

I agree about Genevieve, entirely, and I like Laurie too. Vern's rooms bore me, but he is Rusty's favourite. Hilde is DEFINATELY a freak, and I HATED the hay - that was so completely hideous, not to mention impractical. I missed the felt episode, but that sounds like Hilde. This was the first episode that I ever really watched with Doug, but Rusty said that Doug messed up a woman's fireplace and made her cry!

What about Frank, you never mentioned him? Frank is odd - I like his thought processes, but not his colour schemes. He uses too much colour, IMO. Rusty really likes him, too. My favourites are Genevieve and Laurie... of course, I think I may have a crush on Laurie, so I could be biased. ;)
From: [info]muridae
Date: 10/3/2002 7:26:35 PM

I like Frank as a person; he seems like a really nice guy and a friendly designer UNLIKE DOUG WHO MADE SOMEONE CRY. The woman said, "We like traditional designs and do not touch the fireplace." So what did he make but an ultramodern room with a completely covered (he compromised and made a cover for it out of wood) fireplace! She cried, and the husband said that all he saw was a whole bunch of firewood.

Anyway, Frank, I like him, but his rooms are always so Wild West mixed with down-home country which is really not my thing at all. Too... eh.

How can you have a crush on Laurie? She's so mean! She always takes away the ceiling fans!
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 10/3/2002 7:47:28 PM

Re Frank: Agreed. I *hate* the country look. Did you see the green and yellow "good cup of tea" room? That is the epitome of all I despise. I do admire his vision, his tastes and mine are wildly different.

As for Laurie, I don't have a ceiling fan, so I'm not worried about it. ;)

Rusty and I were talking about that earlier; which designers we wouldn't let in the house! We also wondered how they pick the designers that they use; I notice that Hilde and Doug aren't on nearly as much as the others. Maybe Hilde scheduled for as many shows as the other designers, but when she shows up, the homeowners cancel! LOL

LMAO!!! Well, the only reason that our daughter was born, was that I had charts and graphs and these things HAD to be done at certain times (I was specifically trying to have a girl). Left to chance, we never would have gotten around to it. We would have been in our 60's, sitting around saying, "ya know, we ought to have a kid some day..." as we flipped through TV channels.

My goldfish are acting sickly - Oskar is lethargic and Einstein has something weird going on with his wen. I don't know if some sort of parasite is to blame, or if the water quality's gone bad, but I need to do something, and fast. I will start with a radical water change, and add salt and Biozyme. Maybe I should change one of the filter cartridges and replace the zeolite, too. Ugh.

If anything happens to these (really freaking expensive) fish, I swear I am going to just get a couple of comets and give up on the orandas entirely.

My fish are acting strange right now too...but I think they are cold. The water temperature is at 68, and usually it is higher...so I dunno. They are just sitting there at the bottom of the tank. They were active before their breakfast though; they were trying to get my attention then.
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 10/5/2002 11:12:18 AM

I think they *will* get sluggish (barring food, of course) when their temperature drops. That could be part of the problem here; it was SO hot, and I always had the AC cranked, and then it got really cool, so I didn't use the AC, and now it's hot again, so I'm running the AC again. Maybe I will raise the temp in the tank and see if that helps...
From: [info]paraxeni
Date: 10/5/2002 3:01:35 PM

Mine are acting strange. Rourkey has dropsy really badly and is in quarantine, he's being treated with a new anti-bacterial treatment. The others are missing Rourke and Moz, so they're moping about, and I said to Florissa (at the GF message board) last night that I was giving up, and just keeping the comets and bettas, and then one of my comets died! He was fine at 11pm, by midnight he was dead. I don't understand why because the water is fine, and they have no contact with anything used in the tank where Rourke got sick. *cries* Must be something in the air.

What's wrong with Einstein's wen?
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 10/5/2002 5:10:49 PM

I have no idea - it looks like there is a big red blister underneath it. It's better this morning than it was last night; last night it looked really gross.

I am far more worried about Oskar now. He just lays on the bottom of the tank and looks miserable. when he does move, he doesn't seem to have a lot of control. He doesn't want to eat. I am feeding medicated fish food ATM, but things don't look good. :(

I hope Rourke is feeling better soon! Is dropsy contagious?
From: [info]paraxeni
Date: 10/5/2002 5:43:43 PM

Re:

*sigh* Everyone's fishies seem to be ill. The bacteria that causes dropsy is very contagious, it will wipe out everything if it's not treated. I hope your two don't have pseudomonas or aeromonas (or another type of bacterial infection) . Symptoms are head wounds, listlessness, weight-loss or bloating, unexplained deaths, inability to stay upright. Maybe you'd better get some Maracyn and Maracyn 2? Can't get it here, which is why I got this #9 stuff. I have no idea if it's working, but he's still alive so I suppose it must be.

Good luck!
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 10/5/2002 6:15:59 PM

I hope they don't have those things either, they sound nasty! Is the Maracyn and Maracyn 2 safe? I have heard that some medicines are worse than the problems, and the one time I tried to treat for ich, that held true. Einstein definately seems to have the head wound thing going on, and Oskar is beyond listless... :(
From: [info]paraxeni
Date: 10/5/2002 6:48:03 PM

Re:

Sometimes the meds can be worse. Rourke's tail is fraying because of the anti-bac. stuff, poor guy. Apart from looking gross he seems happy, so I don't want to euthanase him.

According to the people on the gf board, Maracyn & M2 are the best treatment for really serious stuff, or an injection from the vet.

I bought a bottle of Maracyde (made by the same people but more economical). The tablets would have been so expensive! Trading Spaces is the same as our 'Changing Rooms'. As much as I hate, loathe and despise that programme, if I accidentally catch even a few seconds of it I have to watch to the bitter end! I must confess that I really love it when the 'victims' hate the way their rooms turn out, and cry or scream, muhahahah. Also, it's not really the ordinary people that get to choose what happens, they usually have some vile, impractical design scheme foisted on them by one of the..shall we say 'eccentric' designers.

The best home design programme we have here is called 'Home On Their Own' where kids from a family get to redesign the inside of their family home. The parents are shipped off for a few days, and the children get to do whatever they want, with the help of designers, engineers etc. One brother and sister turned their bedroom into the forest scene from 'The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe'. There was a permanent snowfall in the room, a lifesize lion, frosted trees, lampposts, and they had to get into their room through a wardrobe full of fur coats!

Date: 10/6/2002 2:01:40 PM

OMG, Home On Their Own sounds SO COOL! That would be terrifying for the parents - I can only imagine the Pokemon and X-Men themes that my older kids would conjur up. Still, I wouldn't mind having the LWW room, minus the fur coats... =D

Magic 8.15.2000 - 10.6.2002

Magic, my sweet and beautiful fawn rex dumbo girl, died in my arms this evening.

Magic and her sister Mischief were my first dumbo rats. I was so excited to get them, that when I woke up in labour on the day I was to pick them up, on 9.23.2000, that I tried to convince my mom to take me to get them anyway (almost two hours away) - I wanted my dumbos now, dammit! I gave birth to my human girl a few hours later, and had to wait until the next weekend to get my dumbo girls. They turned out to be well worth the wait, and became my sweetest babies as they grew up.

Mischief died a few weeks ago, and Magic clearly missed her sister, co-conspiritor, and best friend. They were the last of the original M-Rats.

It never ceases to amaze me how people will blindly listen to those in positions of authority, without evaluating the situation for themselves...

Case in point #1 - when the first WTC tower was hit, those people were on their way out, and the powers-that-be told them to go back to their offices. They did. My ass would have been in New Jersey by the time the second plane hit.

Case in point #2 - these fools in Montgomery County MD have told parents to just leave their kids in school, don't pick 'em up early. Umm, NO. Can you imagine those poor kids, trapped inside a school where one of their classmates has just been SHOT? I don't think so. Those kids need to go home.

Baaaa

There is a sheep mentality that kicks in. It's startling the extent schools will go to in order to maintain the 'nothing to see here folks' status quo. When I was in High School, a teacher was shot on a Sunday afternoon while interrupting a robbery (the idiots tried to drag the safe out). We were told it was 'perfectly safe' to go back to school on Monday even though they hadn't caught the perp and thought they might STILL BE IN THE BUILDING. Needless to say, I did NOT go in on Monday and got a detention for an unexcused absence.

Re: Baaaa

That's absolutely, stunningly, mind-bogglingly insane. :\
From: [info]muridae

A fire alarm went off in a school building last week. They have a tendency to do this in this building, and the teacher wasn't planning on leaving. She said, "If anyone wants to leave, you can go, but if you want to stay here, we're going to keep having class."

I left the building, and I went home. No way I'm staying in a building where the fire alarm is going off, even if it's just a drill!

Even worse, there were a whole bunch of people standing around by the elevator!

I guess maybe those people in the buildings were really confused and afraid and didn't know what to do and thought they might lose their jobs if they left and figured, a plane flying into a building, how could that happen again?

Still, Jersey.

People are crazy. No way my kid would be staying in a school where someone was shot
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 10/7/2002 5:22:20 PM

Definately Jersey. As for the kids, can you imagine? Because you know they know just enough to freak em out, but not what's really going on. I would yank my kids out of school as soon as I heard, even if I had to knock over a nun to do it.
From: [info]catmoran
Date: 10/7/2002 1:06:54 PM

There was a fire in the basement at a place I worked at several years ago. We were up on the 11th floor, and so used to false alarms that we didn't believe it and leave the building until the receptionist made an announcement.

But-- a plane flies into a building (yours or one very near by, it makes little difference), that's a difficult thing to ignore!

I'd've taken the stairs and still been on the ground by the time the second plane hit.
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 10/7/2002 5:24:17 PM

Definately. Even if I thougt it was just an accident, even if I didn't think that the building would ultimately collapse - a plane hits the building, and I am outta there.
From: [info]artmomz
Date: 10/7/2002 1:19:58 PM

Yeah...as soon as I read that, I was thinking, "Gosh...I'd be picking up my kid, what are they going to do...try and stop me?" They have to carry me out first. You'd see me on the news, Mother gets dragged away from the school...
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 10/7/2002 6:00:46 PM

I hear ya! It seemed like they were being pretty understanding, but still, to even ASK a parent to leave their kid there, is nuts.

[and another thing] 10/7/2002 11:00:00 AM

purple_stardust

I also don't understand the mentality behind these shootings. I mean, I can understand wanting to shoot someone. But if I did decide to act on it, if I decided that I wanted to shoot someone enough that I was willing to risk spending the rest of my life in prison - you can damn well be sure that I would choose someone that I really didn't like. I just don't understand the motivation behind shooting people at random. I could see shooting a hateful parent, an ex-lover, even an obnoxious driver - but why some anonymous woman at a craft store? People are so fucked up...

I'd say it's a deliberate attempt to cause fear; and it's probably turning out pretty successful right now. After all, with some sniper rifles (I'm thinking the Barrett Light-50 here), you could pick someone off from a mile away. The whole point seems to be that it is totally random, and so no-one in Washington can be sure that they won't be the next target. Pretty soon, you get a local populace that's paralysed by fear and don't dare set foot outside their own homes. As a fear tactic, it's very effective.
From: [info]catmoran

I always forget which word it is, sociopath or psychopath. The second one, I think. They basically have no perception of other living beings as anything but moving, 3-dimensional set dressing. So,

"Gee, it might be fun to go shoot a moving target."

Weird-ass creepy. And as far as I've ever heard, they can't be cured.
From: [info]arkady

Actually, sociopath is the American term, psychopath the UK one. Two names for the same condition. However, "psychopath" unfortunately has a long history of misuse, so in this day and age sociopath is a more accurate term.

I talked to Roscoe. He told me he was going to stop dealing because he was out looking last weekend and ended up doing a bunch of coke. Whatever.

Adelphia turned off the cable, again, because I neglected to pay the bill, again. Arrrgh. Note to self: pay the cable bill before they turn it off. Yeah. I thought Rusty would be pissed, but he was surprisingly cool, probably because he realises that he's even more of an airhead than I am, and that we'd have no utilities, were it not for my half-assed attempt at household organisation. Scary, isn't it?

M-o-o-n, that spells cable bill.

Life is weird without cable. I spent the remainder of the daytime hours, hitting refresh at wjla.com, because G-d forbid I miss the news. I also notice that I have no concept of time without the television. This amused me until I remembered the scene in I Am Sam, when his neighbour told him how to remember when to feed the baby, based on the Nick-at-Night schedule.

This evening, we watched a Winnie-the Pooh DVD with Sarah, and then The Deep End of the Ocean after she'd gone to bed. It was an obvious tear-jerker, but I liked it anyway. Except now I have become insanely paranoid, and I plan to nail Sarah's bedroom windows shut tomorrow morning.

But now it is time for dinner and the Shining Force! :)

There are "BEW" (black-eyed white) rats, but I'm not sure that there are silver-tipped rats. There IS a "chinchilla" colour - I've not seen one IRL, but I imagine that it's similer to the silvery ferrets (my mom has one of those).

Not long now; she's due on the 24th. I took delivery of the new nursery tank today - a nice big Rody Cavy cage, too small for a cavy IMHO, but just perfect for a mother with a litter of growing babies! I still have about 3kg of EMP in the cupboard, and I've ordered more Lactol. Most importantly, Veloria herself is looking very fit and well; she's put on about 45 grams weight in the past week!! The vet has been notified of the expected due date, too - just in case vet assistance becomes required.

No; she's an Alpha Centauri rat from Estelle Sandford, as are most of my rats - including her late aunt Velveteen. I've never, to the best of my knowledge, had a Pendragon rat but Pendragon's Forgetmenot, Ivor and Ajax (all Russian Blue) are all in Veloria's lineage so the babies will carry a little Pendragon blood too; it's from them that any potential Russian Blues will come. There's not a huge percentage chance of Russian Blue, as there isn't any in Mercury's side of the family - but you never know. Fingers crossed...

And in case you're wondering - yes, I'm keeping any Russian Blues I get! LOL!

I swear, I think my aquarium is cursed. I noticed the heater light had been on a lot lately, which makes sense, since it has been chilly here for the past few days. I went over to check the temperature, and it was off the charts! I mean, it was warm enough that I would swim in there, and for goldfish, that's way too warm. Needless to say, I've unplugged the heater! The fish seem fine, except for Garfunkel II, who has a very bad case of dropsy. This sucks; that was a really expensive heater, to be malfunctioning so soon. I hope my fishies will be okay...

Bloody hell! I think we're under a similar curse. I got a phonecall to say my grandad has had a heart attack and a stroke, and him and my nan are stuck in Spain. She's had to find somewhere to stay (it was right at the end of their holiday). Aaaargh!

Are you going to get the heater replaced? How is GarfII doing? Rourkey's eyes have gone down to almost normal size, and I think he's less swollen. He's still quite fat, but even when he's looking 'thinner' he seems sort of...stretched, so I can't really tell. Argh!
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 10/9/2002 12:44:45 PM

Oh jeez, how awful about your grandfather! I hope he'll be okay!

I don't know about the heater, I don't even know what's wrong with it. As for GarfII, she's pretty badly pineconed. It's weird though, because sometimes she swims perfectly normally (you'd never know there was somehing wrong) and other times she floats upside down at the surface (to the point that I've thought she was dead).

I don't know what to do. I have been using the Maracyde, and feeding medicated food, but I don't have a spare tank to Q her. I hope the other fish don't get it. :(
From: [info]paraxeni
Date: 10/9/2002 1:42:01 PM

Re:

Poor Garfunkel :( I don't have a Q-tank either, Mr Rourkeyfush is in a plastic bucket I got for 77p! I've put an airstone, and a box-filter in it, and he's doing much better. He's getting impatient now though, like when you've been sick in bed and you just want to get up and go out. He was fully 'pineconed' but that #9 stuff seems to be helping, and I've put some epsom salts in there too. He still looks weird, but he's recognisably a fish now, and not a football with fins!

I've heard nothing else about my granddad, so I'm assuming no news is good news. It sucks though. Escaping from Auschwitz-Birkenau, working so hard to make a new life here, only to get two types of cancer, Alzheimers and have a heart attack & stroke all in the same year! He's a fighter, I'm sure he won't give up easily.
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 10/9/2002 1:57:48 PM

Wow. He really IS a survivor! Perhaps (if it's okay with you) I could get all my Jewish friends together to say one big prayer for him? If anyone deserves a break, it's him!

Would the maracyde keep my other fish from getting the dropsy, do you think?
From: [info]paraxeni

Re:

Yeah thanks, he needs all the prayers he can get! *hugs*

From: [info]purple_stardust

Poor fishies! I have no doubt that these fish would have been cooked too, had I not noticed it when I did. The temperature wouldn't even register on the thermometer (it goes to 88f), and the glass was warm to the touch. I hope they'll be okay! :(
From: [info]allmyvoices

I always wanted to do an aquarium, but they are so complicated and hard to keep so that they're healthy for the fish. I did do goldfish bowls. I got really close to my goldfish and my bettas and to Billy, my newt, who used to like to be the referee during backgammon games (its one of those things where you had to be there, I guess).
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 10/9/2002 2:36:19 PM

Ooh, I never had a newt! I am thinking about getting a leopard ghecko, when I have less bettas. I have nine now, five males and four females, and they take up a lot of room. Thé bettas are okay, but I think the goldfish have a lot more personality.

Rusty woke me up way too early. At least he didn't hold a hot cup off coffee on my bare arse this time - he did when I had to get up early on Sunday! I can't really blame him; I AM dreadfully difficult to awaken (1).

I went to the post office and bank. Nothing exciting to say there. It was raining, which I love when I'm at home, but not so much when I'm driving in that car with its crappy tires. POS-car has cruise control. I did not know this. I resisted the urge to stop at Petsmart and go ghecko-shopping.

Came home in time to catch David Bowie on Regis. He sang a song from his new CD Heathen, and then Changes. He is looking mighty fine these days! He has the sexiest teeth on the planet, and I *want* him. /swoon

Footnotes:

(1) - I sleep like a rock. I am also a pathological liar in my sleep. I used to tell my mother all sorts of excuses - I'm picking up crayons, I'm curling my hair, etcetera - to the point that she used to torture me awake. Once, she rattled a metal nail file between my teeth - which probably explains my aversion to metal utensils (2).

(2) - I don't even own metal utensils; I only eat with plastic utensils. I can eat with metal utensils, if I absolutely have to, but when I do, I have to curl my lips back over my teeth so there's no chance of the metal hitting my teeth. I can't even stand the sound of metal clinking on other peoples' teeth.

They also have Autumn Leaf checks, which I like the concept of, but these particular designs are kinda boring. What I would really like is just purple checks, maybe marbled. Alas, the only ones I've found like that, have other colours in the book. Maybe I will get checks from PETA; they have one designed by Berkeley "Bloom County" Breathed. It looks like this place has other animal rights designs, as well. I just don't know.

Fund-Raiser Drops Nimoy As Speaker
Thu Oct 10,10:26 AM ET

SEATTLE (AP) - The Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle has dropped Leonard Nimoy (news) from its Oct. 23 fund-raiser because of images in the former "Star Trek" star's art photography book of naked and partially dressed women, some with Jewish ritual items.

Federation director Barry Goren withdrew the invitation Wednesday in an "unpleasant" conversation, Nimoy told The Seattle Times for an article published Thursday.

The umbrella Jewish community group, which has about 4,500 regular donors, could not afford to jeopardize the annual fund-raiser, which produced about $10 million last year, Goren said.

After receiving "some expressions of concern" — he would not say how many — "I brought it to my leadership," Goren said.

"I think it's pretty self-explanatory," he said." If you were running a charity fund-raising dinner and there were going to be images of naked women or naked women with Jewish ritual objects draped on them, that might be offensive to some folks."

Comedian Al Franken, author of "Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot: And Other Observations," has been booked as a replacement, Goren said.

Nimoy said he was shocked.

"It may be an anomaly. I hope it is. We have not had this kind of reaction anyplace else," he said.

The cover for Nimoy's book, "Shekhina," shows a woman with her left arm wrapped in phylacteries, a prayer accessory men traditionally wear, and her right breast visible through a translucent garment.

The work is entirely "reverential," said Nimoy, 71, a Jew who grew up in an Orthodox household and is now Reform.

"It's a photographic essay on the subject of the Shekhina, which is the feminine presence of God, the feminine aspect of divinity," he said. "This is not some figure that is a foggy mist in a cloud somewhere. I have depicted her as being a flesh-and-blood woman."

Some of his black-and-white photos are on display at the Skirball Cultural Center, a Jewish display and performing arts complex in Los Angeles, and the museum of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, Reform Judaism's clergy training academy in New York.

"His evocations of spirit and flesh, prayer, gathering and embrace form a visual portal through which one may encounter this spiritual presence," the New York museum's Web site says.

For traditionalists, "there's no question that some of these issues could be considered transgressive," Nimoy said, but he maintained that federation officials knew about the photographs when they invited him in July.

Goren said Nimoy was asked "not to talk about his book but to talk about his 'Jewish journey,' a speech he has given in Jewish organizations before," although copies of the book were to have been available for sale.

Nimoy said he offered to negotiate with the federation on which images would be used in his slide show, but no agreement was reached and the talks collapsed Wednesday.

I am so bored/pissed/annoyed. Rusty was supposed to have today off, but when I woke up, he (and the car!) was gone. He left a message on the phone saying that he had gone into the office to send the other two guys out, but one of them hadn't shown up, so he was going to work with the other one. I'm so sick of this.

I need to rant. Gina (driftwood) is REALLY getting on my nerves. At first I was just sick of her whining about how much her life sucks - she's like, 19 - she has no idea how much life sucks. But now I am REALLY pissed at her. I drove all the way to Philly and gave her a rat - now that rat has a lump in his throat, and she just keeps whining to me about how sorry she is, but seems unwilling to DO anything to help him. She just keeps whining that G-d is taking away everything she loves (one of her older rats died, and she broke up with her cheesy boyfriend, waah). Ugh.

From: [info]purple_stardust

I have no idea. That's what it *sounds* like, but it's hard to get a straight answer out of her. She said his breathing is laboured and he seems lethargic, plus she just got that rat (Neil) from the petstore about a week ago, which would be consistant with SDA.

On the other hand, her other rat (Miles) is fine. She says the lump is in the middle of his throat, not on one side, so I thought it might be an abcess. She says she doesn't see a scab on it, but that the lump is small (not visable, only noticable by touch), and hasn't grown since she noticed it. The only thing that I could think of besides SDA or an absess, is cancer, but he's much too young (six months) for that to really be likely.

Whatever it is, he needs a vet, but apparently there are none in Philidelphia. /rolls eyes

Well the lumps don't have to be on one side or the other, they can be one in the center. My guess is that she brought home a virus when she got Neil. I sent you an email last week, probably spelled the damn eeyore wrong. It was before you told me how to spell it. I had mentioned that she got that petstore rat, and said that I was just waiting for something bad to happen.

Meet The Gecko. He is called The Gecko because he has no permanent name yet. Until he does, feel free to refer to him by his nickname, All Laurie's Fault. Yeah. I bought a gecko, and he needs a name. I am torn between something stuffy and British, something Jewish, or Fred (he came from Frederick MD). He (or she) is a very small gecko - the reptile department punk guessed less than two months old. He doesn't seem to mind being handled, and he has already eaten three crickets!

I finally gave in and ordered the other Judaism book that I needed; I couldn't find it locally. I also ordered a gecko book! And I ordered two new DVDs - Immortal Beloved and Amadeus. We've already seen them, but they're two of our favourites.

And then I went grocery shopping, yuck. I also stopped at the local hell hole pet store and bought some more stuff for The Gecko; a better heat lamp, a prettier water dish, and his special vitamin dust. I also bought fifty mealworms and a potato - and now I have a mealworm farm! They're so gross, but not so annoyingly bouncy as the crickets. He hasn't eaten one yet, only crickets, so I hope he likes them.

Rusty is watching We Were Soldiers. It's probably not a bad movie, but it bugs the shit out of me because when they talk, they mumble, but then when they show the actual war scenes, it's blaring. I understand that war is louder than people talking, but there needs to be some moderation. The volume needs to be turned well up to hear them speak, but in the next scene, it's loud enough to raise the dead.

Gecko Ranch advises:

When selecting your mealworms, be sure to choose "soft" ones that are not in the shedding process. Feel the mealworms in your culture at various growth stages to get an idea of what "soft" and "hard" mealworm skin is like.

I promptly deleted the comment, banned him from ever commenting in my journal again, and switched my journal to friends-only. Not that I'm paranoid for my safety, I just don't like to give the freaks a free outlet for their hatefulness. Anyway, I see that he hasn't grown any more enlightened since then.

Okay, one more post about The Gecko, and then I promise I'll shup up about geckos (and associated crickets and mealworms and lizard poopie) for a while.

He has eaten six crickets in the 24 hours that I've had him! I showed him a mealworm today (he's never eaten anything but small crickets), but he was not interested. I may have over-dusted it with the vitamin powder though, or he may have still been full of crickets, so I will try again tomorrow. I hope he'll eat them, otherwise, what am I going to do with a friggen mealworm farm? Ewww.

Most online sources that I've seen, say that the baby leopard geckos don't like to be handled. This one doesn't rush to be picked up like the rats do, but he doesn't seem to object too much, and he seems pretty calm once he's out.

I got his tank all set up! It is a 10-gallon aquarium with Calci-Sand, a stone water dish, and a half-log hidey cave. I got a better heat lamp (I was using a small desk lamp at first) and the blue (day-time) and red (night-time) bulbs.

Geckos are nocturnal, and can tolerate cooler nights. For extra-cold nights, there is a special red bulb, and the lizard thinks it's night-time, so they get heat without screwing with their little internal clocks. I don't know if I will regularly heat his tank at night (my thermostat is set within his comfort range anyway), but I have the red bulb on now, because I want to sleep on the sofa and see what he does tonight!

/me is much amused with the new gecko.

If megacolon is bonded to white spotting then you should be able to cleanly remove it from a blood line by removing all the white spotting. But if it's separate and needs white spotting to set it off and you remove all the white spotting you won't remove the megacolon, but rather surpress it.

That means that five generations down the line if someone tries to breed in a white spotted rat (that has no history of MC) you could get MC babies all over again. In both cases the line has no more MC, but only in one case is it really gone for good.

I hope my copy of The Leopard Gecko Manual arrives soon! I want to see what it says; I keep getting conflicting information on the internet. Like, on how often (and how much!) to feed them, for example. And whether to dust the prey every time, or every other time. Also, I am supposed to put a piece of wet moss in there, I think to help The Gecko shed, but I'm not sure what kind of moss, and if I'm supposed to stick it in his cave, or on it. I hope he'll be okay until I can figure it out!

I also need some decorating ideas; his tank is so boring! He only has his water dish and his hidey cave... he needs STUFF. Maybe I will get him a rock, or a piece of driftwood to sit on. Or some plants - Laurie, are there any non-prickley succulants that would be safe to plant in there? I think some live plants would be nice.

Rusty (who did not want The Gecko) is already saying that his tank is too small (it's not), and that he needs a 125-gallon tank with a tree to climb. Unfortunately, leopard geckos are not much for climbing, but he means well.

From: [info]muridae
Date: 10/18/2002 11:01:57 PM

Trust me, they don't care about anything that doesn't move. They don't even notice insects unless the bugs are running around. They're definitely not going to care about the plants. =)

I have no plants in my tanks, but that's mostly because I'd need bigger tanks since I'd have to put down a soil substrate and it's easier to just have sand.

You should make Rusty buy a 125 gallon tank, and fill it with plants and tiny geckos. That would rule.

I had to drop off DVDs at the rental place, so I stopped at Sheetz to pick up a few things. For those of you not on the US east coast, Sheetz is a convenience store, like 7-11 but way better. It must have been Bad 80's Hair Night at Sheetz, because I saw both a woman with a mullet AND a guy with a rat-tail.

Anyway, I was standing in line with my stuff, and the creepy little Mullet Woman pointed to the can of cat food that I put on the counter, and asked me how much I was paying for it. I said 79 cents, or something.

Her response: "I got cats too, and I ain't paying no 79 cents for a can of cat food." Then she proceeded to tell me how much canned cat food cost at the supermarket, as if I had never been to one.

I said "Well, that just goes to show you how much I hate going to the supermarket." I left off "...because at the supermarket, there are even MORE mullet-wearing grammar-impaired freaks like you!"

People completely freak me out.

As I was explaining to the husband the other day, I find myself suppressing the desire to gorge myself with certain items. (It was twinkies at this particular time.) I decided to blame my stepmom (you know, she's the cause of all things bad ;o)...if she hadn't put us on a 'daily ration', I probably wouldn't be this bad off. We took two of the ratlets down to Manassas VA to meet their new parents. One of them already has two of my Siamese babies, and the other girl seemed really cool too. It was kind of weird going to Manassas; the Petco where we met is right across the road from the Sunoco station where one of the sniper shootings took place.

Afterwards, I went into Petco to see if they had my leopard gecko book, which Barnes & Noble still hasn't shipped. They didn't, but I did buy The Leopard Gecko: An Owners Guide and The Guide to Owning a Leopard Gecko. New books, hooray!

We drove to Harrisburg PA to meet another ratlet adoptor. The ratlet in question was the little hooded boy, and I was really sad to see him go. I'm glad I kept the baby I did, the one who looks like Brutus, but I'm a sucker for hoodeds anyway, and this little guy was really sweet. I hope she takes good care of him.

And then we stopped at Petsmart, where I bought The Leopard Gecko Manual, and some more mealworms. Yesterday, I bought him a piece of driftwood, so now I want to buy some succulents and make his tank prettier. I also had an idea on how to make a really cool hidey cave; perhaps I will start on that tomorrow.

On the drive home, we had a spirited discussion about religion and politics and how to fix the world. I'm starting to think that Rusty is Jewish, and just doesn't know it.

I ordered subs and stuff from Anthony's. The delivery guy saw the Papa John's boxes in the trash, and teased me about that. I told him that it was just one night and that it didn't mean anything, but I don't think he believed me.

And now we're watching CNN - they might have a lead on the sniper investigation.

I am starting to think that getting The Gecko was a bad idea. Aww, don't say that. They aren't very active, at least from what I can tell. During the day they sleep, and during the night they come out, check things outs (slowly, btw...) and then go back to sleep.

From my experience (which is nothing to be taken seriously, I gather because these are my first two geckos), they don't drink often. I've never seen ours drink from the water bowl either.

They don't really do much... They kinda sit around all day. But mine do eat anything I put in with them, very enthusiastically. Might he be feeling unwell, or perhaps suffering from parasites, or maybe it's too cold, or not used to the new surroundings yet?
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 10/21/2002 11:15:29 PM

I don't know about the parasites; what are the symptoms? From the books I've read, geckos seem a lot like rats - the symptoms of everything are lethargy and loss of appetite.

I guess it *could* be too cold... during the day I use a 100w basking light, and at night he gets a 60w red bulb. The thermometer is at the other end of the tank, and it usually reads 85f during the day, 75f at night, on the cooler end.

I don't know enough about them to know what is considered lethargic. He lays under his log for most of the day. When I put in the red bulb, he comes out and sleeps on the sand on that end. Once in a while he walks around the tank, but not much.

I just don't know what do do. He hasn't eaten much since he gakked up that white pod. He doesn't like mealworms at all, nor the canned crickets. I put the last two live crickets in there this morning, but I don't know for sure if he's eaten them or if they're hiding.

I am going out tomorrow to get more live crickets, but if he won't eat them, I don't know what else to do. If he doesn't start eating *something* soon, I'm going to have to take him back to Petsmart. I can't just let him starve. :*(
From: [info]bioclaire
Date: 10/22/2002 2:15:40 AM

Our geckos HATE canned crickets.

Also, I was under the impression that geckos had to be at 90 degrees during the day? And around 80 during the night...? Is that too hot? O_O

I woke up to find there had been another shooting, this time a 40-year-old bus driver in Montgomery County. I was telling Jonah the other day, the thing that I find interesting about this case is, the media has reduced these victims to a/s/l. They get a name, age, location, maybe an occupation, but that's about it. I was thinking 9-11, and how the media gave us personal details about a lot of the victims, we were made to feel that we knew them. With these victims, the media tells us nothing about them. There are as anonymous to us as they are to the shooter. I wonder if this is a deliberate move, or if the media (and the public) has just become that jaded.

[the noshing gecko] 10/22/2002 9:25:00 PM

Leopard geckos have two staple food possibilities: mealworms and crickets. I thought mealworms would be a good choice, being easy to breed, and more importantly, easy to catch. Both are gross, but at least the mealworms won't try to jump on my hand. I don't have to touch them. But anyway, those are the two options.

Except, my gecko is defective, and hates mealworms. I thought he was sick, because he refused to eat. But it wasn't that he refused to eat, it was that he refused to eat mealworms. I put five or six live crickets in there and he ate them all.

Spoiled lizard. Now what the hell am I doing to do with this mealworm farm???

Oooh, they arrested two guys last night near Frederick MD (where I got The Gecko, btw). They've been playing it pretty close to the vest, but I'm pretty sure that they think they're responsible for the DC area sniper shootings, or at least know who is.

[errands] 10/24/2002 1:00:00 PM

purple_stardust

I went to the post office and bank... got my checkbook balanced for the first time since October 1st. My stupid bank started charging a fee for using another bank's ATM machine, in addition to the fee that the other bank charges, so it was a mess.

And then I stopped at Petsmart and bought more creepy crickets for The Gecko, as well as a bigger hidey log, some moss, and a jar of some sort of calcium-fortified gelatinous crap that is supposed to hydrate the obviously retarded crickets so that they don't drown in real water. I wanted cricket food, but they didn't have any.

So I came home, where I have been watching the news. I was hoping Moose would have something more to say about the sniper investigation, but not yet. It looks like the two guys that they arrested last night ARE the sniper(s). I really hope they give us some idea of their motives; they don't fit the typical serial killer profile.

I'm hungry, and there's no food in the house. Well, okay, so there IS technically food in the house, but it's all gross and stupid and not what I want to eat.

[gecko decor] 10/24/2002 10:00:00 PM

I stapled moss to the underside of his new hiding log and misted it. I also stole one of the goldfishes' big smooth rocks and scrubbed and boiled it, and put it in the gecko tank, in case he wants to bask. I bought a big piece of driftwood last weekend, I soaked it in weak tea to darken it just a tad, and added that. I even used the tweezers to make little zen garden paths. I know, I need help.

I want to get another (non-corner) water dish, as the stupid crickets keep wedging themselves between the bowl and the wall, and hiding. I also want to put up a backdrop of some sort, given all the goldfish aquarium cords and tubing that hang behind the tank. And I still want to add a few live plants. As soon as I do these things, I think it will be just as I want it to look. Except for one thing...

Now that we've recreated this natural desert environment, we want to get two miniature pink plastic flamingos to stick in tothe sand. THEN it will be perfect. =)

I suppose some degree of commerce would grind to a halt if telephone solicitors weren't able to call people at home during the dinner hour. But that doesn't make it any more pleasant. Now Steve Rubenstein, a writer for the San Francisco Chronicle, has proposed "Three Little Words" based on his brief experience in a telemarketing operation that would stop the nuisance for all time.

The three little words are "Hold on, please." Saying this while putting down your phone and walking off instead of hanging up immediately would make each telemarketing call so time consuming those boiler rooms would grind to a halt. When you eventually hear the phone company's beep beep beep tone, you know it's time to go back and hang up your handset, which has efficiently completed its task. This might be one of those articles you'll want to e-mail to your friends.

When you get ads in your phone or utility bill, include them with the payment. Let them throw the stuff away. Think globally; act locally. When you get those pre-approved letters in the mail for everything from credit cards to 2nd mortgages and junk like that, most of them come with postage paid return envelopes, right? Well, why not get rid of some of your other junk mail and put it in these cool little envelopes! Send an ad for your local chimney cleaner to American Express, or a pizza coupon to Citibank. If you didn't get anything else that day, then just send them their application back! Just make sure your name isn't on anything you send them. You can send it back empty if you want, just to keep 'em guessing!

Let's turn this e-mail into a chain letter! Eventually, the banks and credit card companies will begin getting all their junk back in the mail. Let's let them know what it's like to get junk mail, and best of all...THEY'RE paying for it! Twice!

Let's support our postal service. They say e-mail is cutting into their business and that's why they need to keep increasing postage. We can help! Pass this along to all your friends and maybe we could get enough business for the post office that they will not have to raise rates in 2004.

Ugh. I went to bed last night at about 2pm. At about 4pm, my daughter was crying, and Rusty, in his infinate wisdom, got her up instead of changing her diaper and giving her a bottle and putting her back to bed. So there we are, 4am, and my daughter is patting me on the shoulder with the "mommy up, mommy up" talk. Argh.

I put her back to bed, and made a 5am trip to the supermarket. Came back and took a nap, and then started dehydrating fruits and veggies for the rats' food mix.

And now I'm bored. I bought some temporary purple hair colour yesterday, but I haven't tried it yet, as I feel a nap coming on. I feel like I should eat, since I saved half of my sub from last night, but I'm too trifling to go heat it up. Bah.

Will Hilde never learn, that if you set furniture out in your yard, it will rain? Also, her colours are wretched, and that big giant face on the wall is just freaking disturbing. Yikes. Frank did a sorta-neat purpley room for this episode.

I haven't seen tonight's ep yet, but I'm *convinced* that the homeowners 'helping' Hilde in the first ruined-furniture ep ruined that furniture on purpose. I mean, did you see the look of horror on the guy's face when Hilde got the new furniture then told him that they'd be painting *it*? (Then she whipped out some slip covers in the same blinding color. Not so bad, since slip covers can be *removed*.)

Anyway, we took the scenic route home; that was interesting - dinosaurs and dead Indians... I took photos, but am too trifling to post them just now.

how would you commit suicide?

This is probably accurate for me. Of all the possibilities, it seems like the best way to go. I would be too paranoid to shoot myself, as with my luck, I would do it wrong and end up a living vegetable, and I couldn't deal with the suffocation involved with asphyxiation, drowning, or hanging. Overdosing would be a possibility, but from personal experience I have found that my inhumanly high drug tolerance makes this one damn near impossible. I think I would OD and then slit my wrists. Yeah.
