I Am A Rock - Simon & Garfunkel

A winter's day
In a deep and dark December
I am alone
Gazing from my window
To the streets below
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow

I am a rock
I am an island

I've built walls
A fortress deep and mighty
That none may penetrate
I have no need of friendship
Friendship causes pain
It's laughter and it's loving I disdain

I am a rock
I am an island

Don't talk of love
Well I've heard the word before
It's sleeping in my memory
I won't disturb the slumber
Of feelings that have died
If I never loved I never would have cried

I am a rock
I am an island

I have my books
And my poetry to protect me
I am shielded in my armor
Hiding in my room
Safe within my womb
I touch no one and no one touches me

I am a rock
I am an island

And a rock feels no pain
And an island never cries

My mom gave me an Amazon gift certificate for Hanukkah, so I went shopping this morning. I bought the Fiddler on the Roof soundtrack CD and a Traditional Jewish Songs CD. Sarah likes the version of Hava Nagila on the second CD. =)

I made a blue and silver beaded tassle for my mom, for Hanukkah! Later, I will make her a pair of crystal candlesticks to match. And now, Rusty and I are each painting a dreidel for Sarah. I thought they would make nice keepsakes for her later on.

It's official - the Snyder family has dreideled. After eating chocolate gelt, Sarah recieved two real dollars, and put one of them in the tzedakah box - very cute.

My mother has been running around singing "The Dreidel Song" for no apparent reason... But she doesn't know the words (She's not Jewish :p)... We get through the first two lines and then crack up laughing everytime as we try to make up words that just don't fit. And we gave my li'l cousin her Christmas present early so she actually got it during Hannukah. Does that make it a Hannukah gift? *hmmm*

And I'm still not done with my Christmas season :p But now I at least know what I need to buy! :D

I took Sarah to the mall to spend her Hanukkah money. She bought a very glamourous pink sequined purse and a pink stuffed pony. She's such a girlie girl! =)

The mall was decked out in Christmas, of course, complete with Santa Claus. The mall is a very depressing place. Hallmark had no Hanukkah cards. And yeah, I know that Hanukkah has already begun, but they had freaking Thanksgiving Day cards. Grrr.

And then I stopped at the supermarket. So I'm standing in the checkout lane, and Sarah is babbling. The cashier says that she wishes she could understand babyspeak, because -and she leans over into Sarah's face - they're so close to Jesus.

I am annoyed on so many levels. First of all, I HATE it when people get in my child's face. Sarah hates it too. Just because she's a child, does not mean she's given up all rights to her personal space. Secondly, why does this woman just assume that I'm a Christian, and that I want her espousing HER religious beliefs to MY child? Would she appreciate it if I told HER kid that the Jesus stuff is a crock? And third, I had no response for her. I can't say that we're Jews, because we're not yet. I can't tell her to back the hell off, because I know that she meant well. Feh.

Argh.
If I had a dollar for everytime somebody wished me a "Merry Christmas". It annoys the HELL out of me. In other news, I am SHOCKED by the amount of Hanukkah stuff out here. In Indiana there was NONE. We all knew the 2-3 shops that had it and raided them early and often. Here I can find Hanukkah wrapping paper in CVS.

I am floored.
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 12/2/2002 4:53:48 PM

Ya know, another firend of mine was just saying that there was a lot in the east, compared to on the west coast, and *I* am floored that this is considered a lot. Seriously, if I did not have internet access, I would have little more than a box of matzoh mix.

And you know what REALLY annoys me? I used to see more stuff. I remember seeing wooden dreidels at one point, and I know I've seen a lot more in the way of Hanukkah cards and paper. I didn't see ANY wrapping paper this year (and I looked at CVS, Walmart, Kmart, Target, and every craft store we have). I thought it would be cool to wrap Sarah's "big gift" in, and then save it for her scrapbook, for her first Hanukkah. Nope. =\

Although... the above-mentioned friend said that her local Target had menorah bears, and the menorah lights up (in the proper order, even)! I didn't see them last time I was at Target, but I am going back to check!

Just do what I do. Understand that the majority of folks you run into (especially in that area) are Christian, smile politely, and go on with your day. Don't let someone (who's trying to be friendly, mind) ruin your day just because they assume that you, like most of the people they know, are the same religion as they are. She meant well, and was trying to be kind... and, if I'm not mistaken, the kindness thing is a pretty big deal to all of the major (and most minor) religions.

And, on the 'Merry Christmas' thing... definitely just accept that and move on. When I first decided to... erm... "break away" from Christianity, these sorts of things bothered me. But by expecting people to keep their beliefs completely to themselves, lest they offend me, I was doing exactly what I was trying to prevent them from doing.

The world's becoming entirely too politically correct. Why can't we all just accept the good wishes, no matter WHAT form they take? So many people go on and on about religious tolerance and how persecuted they are because they're not Christian, yet they turn around and do the exact same thing. *sighs*
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 12/3/2002 12:34:54 PM

Yeah, I do know that she meant well, she seems like a very nice person. Sarah, OTOH, probably thinks she's insane, since to her, Jesus is a gecko. "Merry Christmas" doesn't bother me, since I see it as a secular holiday, and I am sure many other peopel do too.

[private post to vinci] 12/2/2002 4:40:00 PM

I really wasn't trying to be nosey about the Jewish thing! I just have a Jews-only friends filter, so that if I MUST bitch about (or mock) the rampant Christianity that I'm unwillingly exposed to, it won't offend the [very nice] Christians on my list.

For example, in my sons' Catholic school, there is a VERY large crusifix (I would guess about five feet tall), and it hangs in the stairwell, so to go upstairs, you're eye-level with his crotch. And I have an overwhelming compulsion to mock them for WANTING a big naked dead guy hanging on the wall, with his crotch in your face.

By the same token, some people on my friends list are Christians, and might be offended if I posted these thoughts, and since THEY are perfectly nice people, I don't want to upset them because I find certain aspects of their religion weird.

Anyway, I will add you to the *special* group, but if YOU would be offended by my blatant irreverance, let me know and I will take you back off. :)

oh, Heavens no! I wasn't offended at all. :>

Truth be told, I got harrassed for it in high school, but then again, we were one of two jewish families in the entire town. So, moving here has been a real blessing! I love seeing all the holiday stuff in st ores and actually meeting other Jewish friends. :>

I totally agree about the Christianity thing. I had one person attempting to "save" me once by telling me that anyone who didn't believe in Jesus went to hell. I told him thank you, that's just what I n eeded to hear right after my father died. He shut up. x.x
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 12/2/2002 7:50:20 PM

It's funny, because I knew only *one* Jewish family in high school, the mother was my hs newspaper advisor. Now that I'm online (and especially since I joined Live Journal), I have a ton of Jewish friends! Some of them, I met in Jewish communities, but others, like you, I found out were Jewish after the fact! How cool is that? =)

Christianity has always ooged me out a bit. My great-grandmother (my family's last devout Christian) had this *creepy-ass* picture of Jesus in her guest room, and I hated to sleep there because of that thing *looking* at me. The crusifixes are WAY too much.

The people who want to "save" you (against your will, if neccessary!) just completely repulse me. I told a Pentacostal boyfriend once, that if heaven was full of people like him, I wanted no parts of it. Bah.

This in reference to something that [info]angelsil said...

I mentioned in a recent post about how much the Salvation Army bell-ringers got on my nerves, but I didn't tell the whole story for fear of offending someone. I hate the bell ringing anyway (I'm hyper-sensitive to noise), and I won't give them money for that reason; noise pollution doesn't make me feel all charitable. So anyway...

Saturday. I walked into Kmart, and they rang the damned bells at me. I glared at them. I came back out of Kmart, and they rang the damned bells at me. I glared at them again. Now clearly at this point, it is obvious that I have no plans to give money to these people, and that I just want to get away from their insipid migraine-invoking bells. As I walked past, one of the women said "Merry Christmas, Ma'am!"

Now, I think this is the point where my cold grinchy heart was supposed to grow three sizes, and I was supposed to wipe away a tear as I drop a fiver in the bucket. Umm, NO. Normally "Merry Christmas" doesn't bother me (just as I would hope my "Happy Hanukkah" post didn't bother the non-Jews on my friends list), but to use it as some sort of emotional leverage to try to get money... ugh.

I won't give them money becasue I had the bad luck (my mom wanted to dump me off for a week) of being sent to one of their summer (we're gonna save your soul for Jesus every freaking night) camps as a kid (oh, you aren't inner city? Yeah, I want to. New one is tonight at 10, right?

Ohh, and Harry says that he works with a guy who's dad was a special agent in the gov and was assigned to work for a year at the infamous area 51. He says that the alien bodies ARE really there and that he saw them. The higher-ups did not swear him to secrecy or anything because they said even if he tells that no one will believe him so it didnt matter. He also said that they do crazy experiments in rooms with an acid-spraying sprinkler system. He said that they were experimenting with parts of human brains connected to computer chips and making android/robot things with them. He said that they had to evacuate the rooms 4 times while he worked there to kill the things they made (with that acid sprinkler system) because they got out of hand. Major freaky!

I showed your comment to my mom, who told me about the "Philadelphia Experiment" which she'd heard about from a friend, that was supposed to create a Star Trek-type transporter system...

"The military was hoping to be able to transport battleships, so as to surprise the enemy. The theory was that by the time the enemy would see it, it would be too late, as it would just suddenly appear out of thin air, bypassing radar, sonar, and even satellite surveillance. Unfortunately, in their trials, when they'd try to make them rematerialize, the sailors onboard would only PARTIALLY reappear, as some of their molecular structure would have gotten 'lost' - or their molecules would have merged with those of the doorways and stuff!"
From: [info]grimkitten_
Date: 12/4/2002 11:35:17 AM

Yeah, I've heard of that! I think I watched something on it on Discovery a few years ago. How awesome it would be to know all the freaky things that the gov knows about. I just hope they come clean about the alien thing before I die. They should put one of them in glass and charge $100 for anyone who wants to see it. I'd pay that much to see it.

I wonder where they got the 'transporter' technology.......hmmmmmmmmmm. :P

You know, I saw A LOT of stuff on Star Trek before it ever showed up IRL. Desktop computers, for example. Tazers are awfully similer to phasers. And how different are today's cell phones from the communicators in the original series. I wonder how much stuff we have now because some geeky inventor happened to be a Trekkie! :)

I would definately pay $100 to see an alien in a jar...

I just got an email from my mother (who is endlessly fascinated with such things), who says:

"Still thinking about the post you sent last night. If you get a chance, would you ask Monica to clarify something (and give you ANY more information she has), please? Did she mean they used the acid sprinkler system to KILL the android/robot things they made from the brains and computer chips, or was referring to them killing the things MADE using the acid sprinkler system? If the latter, how DID they kill them? The truth is out there, and enquiring minds want to know..."

Do YOU know?
From: [info]grimkitten_
Date: 12/4/2002 11:47:13 AM

That's basically all I know. Harry says that he will press for more info from the guy he works with whenever the opportunity arises. He'll keep me informed, and I'll let you know of anything else I hear.

Yep, they used the acid sprinklers to KILL the android/robot things because they became dangerous. I think because what little intelligence they had was all about survival, so that's all they cared about or something. They were probably trying to hurt the people working with them to escape. (I'm going out on a limb with that one. That is basically what the guy (that harry works with) was saying though but he phrased it much more eloquently).
The acid sprinklers were a safety device to make sure the things did not escape and to make sure they could kill them quickly if they needed to.

I wish I knew more.

Since it's mid-way through Hanukkah songs, it's time to post...

The Chanukah Song by Adam Sandler

Part 1

"Okay... This is a song that uhh.. There's a lot of Christmas
songs out there and uhh.. not too many Chanukah songs. So
uhh...I wrote a song for all those nice little Jewish kids
who don't get to hear any Chanukah songs. Here we go..."

Put on your yarmulke,
Here comes Chanukah!
So much funukah,
To celebrate Chanukah!
Chanukah is the festival of lights.
Instead of one day of presents,
We have eight crazy nights.
When you feel like the only kid in town
Without a Christmas tree,
Here's a list of people who are Jewish just like you and me...
David Lee Roth lights the menorah.
So do James Caan, Kirk Douglas, and the late Dinah Shore-ah.
Guess who eats together at the Carnegie Deli?
Bowser from Sha Na Na and Arthur Fonzarelli!
Paul Newman's half Jewish, Goldie Hawn's half too.
Put them together, what a fine lookin' Jew.
You don't need "Deck The Halls" or "Jingle Bell Rock",
'Cause you can spin a dreidel with Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock -- both Jewish.
Put on your yarmulke
It's time for Chanukah
The owner of the Seattle Supersonicahs
Celebrates Chanukah
O.J. Simpson - not a Jew.
But guess who is? Hall of famer Rod Carew (he converted)
We got Ann Landers and her sister Dear Abby.
Harrison Ford's a quarter Jewish -- not too shabby!
Some people think that Ebenezer Scrooge is
Well he's not, but guess who is -- all Three Stooges!
So many Jews are in showbiz,
Tom Cruise isn't - but I heard his agent is.
Tell your friend Veronica
It's time to celebrate Chanukah.
I hope I get a harmonica
Oh this lovely, lovely Chanukah.
So drink your gin and tonicah
And smoke your marijuanikah.
If you really, really wannakah
Have a happy, happy, happy, happy Chanukah!
Happy Chanukah!"

Part 2

"Time to take out the menorahs!"

Put on your yarmulke
Its time for Chanukah
So much funnaka
To celebrate Chanukah
Chanukah is the festival of lights
Instead of one day of presents
We get eight crazy nights
When you feel like the only kid in town
Without a Christmas tree
Here's a new list of people who are Jewish
Just like you and me...
Winona Ryder drinks Manischewitz wine
Then spins a draydle with Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein
Guess who gives and receives loads of Chanukah toys
The girls from Veruca Salt and all three Beastie Boys
Lenny Kravitz is half Jewish,
Courtney Love is half too
Put them together
What a funky bad ass Jew
We got Harvey Keitel
And flash dancer Jennifer Beals
Yasmine Bleeth from Baywatch is Jewish
And yes her boobs are real
Put on your yarmulka
Its time for Chanukah
Two-time Ocsar winning Dustin Hoffmanaka
Celebrates Chanukah
O.J. Simpson - still not a Jew
But guess who is,
The guy who does the voice for Scooby Doo!
Bob Dylan was born a Jew
Then he wasn't but now he's back,
Mary Tyler Moore's husband is Jewish
'Cause we're pretty good in the sack.
Guess who got bar-mitzvahed
On the PGA tour
No I'm not talking about Tiger Woods
I'm talkin' about Mr. Happy Gilmore.
So many Jews are in the show biz
Bruce Springsteen isn't Jewish
But my mother thinks he is.
Tell the world-amanaka
It's time for Chanukah
It's not pronounced Ch-anakah
The C is silent in Chanukah
So read your hooked on phonica
Get drunk in Tijuanaka
If you really really wannaka
Have a happy happy happy happy Chanukah!

Part 3

"Put on your yarmulke
It's time for Chanukah
Once again it's onaka
The miracle of Chanukah"

Chanukah is the Festival of Lights
One day of presents?
Hell no, we get 8 Crazy Nights!
But if you still feel like the only kid in town without a Christmas tree
I guess my first two songs didn't do it for you
So here comes number three...

Ross and Phoebe from "Friends" say the Chanukah blessing
So does Lenny's pal Squiggy and "Will & Grace"'s Debra Messing
Melissa Gilbert and Michael Landon never mixed meat with dairy
Maybe they shoulda called that show "Little Kosher House on the Prairie"
We've got Jerry Lewis, Ben Stiller and Jack Black
Tom Arnold converted to Judaism,
But you guys can have him back!
We may not get to kiss underneath the mistletoe
But we can do it all night long with Deuce Bigalow
(Rob Schneider: I’m Jewish!)

Put on your yarmulke, here comes Chanukah…
The guy in Willie Nelson’s band who plays harmonica celebrates Chanukah!
Osama bin Laden -- not a big fan of the Jews
Well, maybe that's because he lost a figure skating match
To gold medalist Sarah Hughes - her mama's Jewish
Houdini and David Blaine escape straitjackets with such precision
But the one thing they could not get out of -- their painful circumcision
As for half-Jewish actors, Sean Penn is quite the great one
And Marlon Brando, not a Jew at all, but it looks to me like he ate one
There's Lou Reed, Perry Farrell, Beck and Paula Abdul
Joey Ramone invented punk rock music, but first came Hebrew school

Hey, Natalie Portmanica
It's time to celebrate Chanukah
I hope I get an abtronica
On this joyful, toyful Chanukah
So get a high colonika
And soil your long johnicas
If you really, really wannaka
Have a happy, happy, happy, happy
Happy, happy ... Happy Chanukah!

Rusty finished painting his wooden dreidel for Sarah tonight, and made up this song:

I had a little dreidel,
I made it out of wood.
I know it isn't perfect,
But hey! It's pretty good!

He can be a lot of fun. It's a shame he's such an obnoxious jerk the rest of the time.

Which Sesame Street Muppet's Dark Secret Are You?

The Count's Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder...
It started with a simple affection for counting and the terror it induced in others, didn't it?
But now it's turned into a full-blown life-consuming chaotic nightmare of order, repetition, zealousness, and perfectionism. You used to be so grand, but now you find yourself obsessively worrying over the littlest things - like, maybe if you don't check the light switch at least once every two minutes, the electricity will go out (and dammit, you're a vampire--that shouldn't be a problem!), or maybe if you don't wash your hands until your seams are coming out, you'll get some fatal disease. Get yourself some treatment.

My mom came over for latkes and candle-lighting, which was nice. I made cheese latkes tonight, with sour cream - yummy. I like Hanukkah; because it's eight nights long, there's no rush to do everything and see everyone at once, all in one day, like Christmas is. For example, I haven't finished painting the other dreidel for Sarah yet, but I still have time. Hanukkah is a wonderful holiday for procrastinators.

HELP MEEEEEEE!

I tried to set up a subdomain for my mom to use for eBay. I've got the subdomain set up now, but no matter what I do, I can't seem to upload things properly. No matter how many times I try to upload, or whatever I do, I get a 404 message saying that the file isn't there and there's nothing in the Parent Directory for the domain. Dreamhost's web panel isn't helping at all, but I know that you have subdomains on ziggabella.com, so you could be much more helpful than that stupid knowledge base.

http://seacliff.muridae.org/

SEE? NOTHING!

Do I need to create a new directory in the subdomain? muridae.org already had a directory named muridae.org, which just happened to be where I was supposed to upload files, but the subdomain has no such directory, just maildir and logs. I tried adding one, but that didn't work...

Also, I created the domain last week, so it's not that it's waiting to be set up...

Help me, o wise owner of a domain for longer than I!

It appears to work now (though it's empty - should it be empty?), so I think it probably just took them a while to get it set up. For what it's worth, when I log in via FTP, there are two folders; ziggabella.com/ and madnessie.ziggabella.com/ ... this is what it should look like:

A silly li'l song :p

I found this on a cross-stitching newsgroup I subscribe to and I thought you might find it amusing since it seems like none of us can remember the words to any dreidel song ;)

I have a little dreidel
I made it out of clay
and when it's dry and ready
oh dreidel I shall play.

I have a little dreidel
I made it out of plastic
if someone steals my dreidel
I'll do something very drastic.

I have a little dreidel
I made it out of snow
but when I looked last summer
my dreidel! Where'd it go?

I have a little dreidel
I made it out of gold
and if you give me money
to you it will be sold.

I have a little dreidel
I made it out of wood
but I set it on fire -
now it don't spin so good.

Judas Maccabeus
he fought against the Greeks
a drop of oil lasted
for 1.14 weeks.

We take our Hanukkah candles
and put them in the menorah
and if you don't know how
look it up in the Gemorah.

I threw away my dreidel
That shouldn't make you fret
I'm done with playing dreidel
I've moved up to roulette!

Christmas decorations
for us are quite extraneous--
'cause Hanukkah's not Christmas
although they're simultaneous.

I have a little dreidel,
I made it out of bread,
It looked so very yummy,
I ate it up instead!

I have a little dreidel,
I made it out of glass,
My mom says I can spin it,
but only on the grass!

I have a little dreidel,
it's made out of a shoe,
It smells a little funny,
but then what can you do?

I have a little dreidel,
I made it out of fur,
It was warm and cute and cuddly,
and the spinning made it purr!

I have a little dreidel
I made it out of ham
It surely isn't kosher
But at least it isn't spam!

I have a little dreidel
I made it out of peatmoss.
It spins and spins and spins,
Then "peat"ers to a stop.

I have a little dreidel
I made it out of wood
For me it always lands on nun
Or at least I think it should

I have a little dreidel
I made it out of lead
So when Mama isn't looking
I can bop my brother's head

I have a little dreidel
I spin it like a top
And then I bet my nuts
On where it's going to stop

I have a little dreidel
It's as cute as it can be
I made it from an oyster shell
I found beside the sea.

I have a little dreidel
It's saturate with ether
But every time I play with it
I fall asleep till E/a/s/t/e/r/ Purim?

I have a little dreidel
I made it out of stone,
And if I spin it fast enough
It makes the nicest tone.

I have a little dreidel
I made it out of iron
And if I spin it REALLY fast
It sounds just like a siren.

I have TWO little dreidels
Made of aluminum.
If you spin them near the candles
They will illumin 'em.

I have this little dreidel
I made it on my own.
Won't you play it with me?
It's not much fun alone.

I had a little dreidle,
I made it out of air,
But then I turned around,
and POOF, it wasn't there.

I have a little dreidle,
I made it out of latkes,
I always love Hanukkah,
to get me some new chachkes.

I have a little dreidle,
I made out of gefilte fish,
served with some chrain,[horseradish]
It will make a tasty dish.

I had a little dreidle,
made out of soufganyot,[donuts]
I got a little hungry,
And it went down my throat.

I have a little dreidle,
I made out of cream cheese,
Schmere it on a bagel,
with onions if you please.

I am a little dreidle,
I made it out of me,
you can do it too,
if you don't mind being dizzy

This is the thing. When I was 18 years old, I bought my first car. It was a yellow 1977 Mustang II, and I loved that car. I think I'd had it for about a month, when I decided to drive to Morgantown WV to visit a boyfriend. Unfortunately, the roads were snowy and icy down there, and long story short, I totalled my car. I have been afraid to drive in snow ever since. I am especially petrified when my tires are crap.

Well, I can see what he was saying.

It's not that he didn't process that you were converting, it's that since he didn't know your maiden name, he thought you might already have been Jewish and he just hadn't been aware. He does assume that all Jewish people have "Jewish-sounding" last names, which isn't the case, but it's not "Oh, you're converting, your maiden name must be Jewish"; it's "Oh, I wasn't sure if you were always Jewish and I just didn't know."

Which makes more sense.
From: [info]purple_stardust

Right. Rusty translated it for me when he got home... you have to consider the source though - Roscoe looks, acts, and talks like a character from a Cheech and Chong movie. EVERYTHING that he says sounds baffling and obtuse. He once talked for a half hour about panelling and how it eats the light, man. He's a very strange individual.

While I was out, I stopped to buy crickets for Jesus, and found some nice glass blobs with a minimum of bubbles, so I think I will make marble magnets, too.

I am trying to think of something truly wretched. Not just banal or boring and stupidly catchy, but something that truly gives meaning to the term "horror."

Hmm. I'd almost say William Shatner's record, but it's kind of amusing in its badness.

The GTOs! Now that's a bad band. (Girls Together Outrageously, the band fronted by Pamela Des Barres who is best known for being a groupie. Yeah.

But will that be my choice? Hmmm.
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 12/9/2002 10:04:03 AM

Weren't the GTOs Frank Zappa's little pet project? Oh well, anything that involves Pamela Des Barres, can't be good.

William Shatner's dramatic *reading* of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds WAS pretty damned bad.

If you answer the poll, you will see that someone else mentioned Leonard Nimoy doing a song called "Bilbo" from The Hobbit - that can't be good either.

There are so many awful songs to choose from...
From: [info]muridae
Date: 12/9/2002 10:16:35 AM

Yeah, they were. I somehow ended up with the GTOs record, which is unbearable. Actually, I could have sworn that I also had William Shatner's record at some point, but I have no idea where it might have gone.

I've got to find that Nimoy song!

Still, I can't think of anything that's spectacularly bad enough. Most stuff is just mediocre or ill-conceived, but not horrible.

I didn't even have a problem with IE before, but now if I look at it, it seems so boring and ugly and stupid. Opera is all pretty and purple and I have searchboxes on my toolbar that take me directly to Amazon, Ebay, Download.com, Google, or an image finding place - so cool! So anyway, if you say to download something, I download it! =)

=D

I love that the little search bar is built right in. You know what else rules about Opera? When you open a new window, the cursor is positioned right in the address bar, ready to type away, or you can just hit tab to go to the search bar. When you open a new window with IE, you need to move the mouse all the way up to the address bar and click and then you can type things in, which is so clumsy and unwieldy and stupid.

And you know what else rules about Opera? You can toggle images on and off just using the "g" key, which I don't need any more but was very convenient on dial-up. And you know what ELSE rules about Opera? Mouse gestures. Mouse gestures are the best. Whenever I'm forced to use IE, I keep trying to use mouse gestures and then I can't and that's annoying.

And you know what ELSE rules about Opera? It's so easy to delete cookies, and you can set it to ignore all pop-ups.

Opera would be perfect if it weren't for the fact that many web pages don't really support it so things something display funkily or don't work right. (I can never log in to PayPal, and I always have to log in to eBay twice before it sticks, and some sites just don't work at all, like Live365.)

I'm glad you're liking Opera. I think it rules.

SoulSeek was a little confusing for me at first, but I like the fact that you can set a limit to the number of downloads and uploads, browse other people's files, ban people from downloading, and save a wishlist. Plus, it's a lot faster than Kazaa and I think you can find a much huger selection of music on it.

OH! You might want to try Opera 7.0 (it's a beta version). I tried 6.05 and found that I couldn't stay logged into Live Journal for anything, no matter what settings I tried, but it works just fine with 7.0! Also in 7.0, you can have multiple search boxes - I have ebay, amazon, google, images, and download.com. There is also lycos and a bunch of others to choose from.

Which reminds me... do you use the Opera e-mail client too? My mom is interested, if there's a decent e-mail program, as Netscape won't work for her, and she hates OE. I am having trouble getting the email set up, but I didn't know if it was just me being dense.

* Touched by an Angel (it's all ewwwy gooey grossness)
* The West Wing (although Rusty loves this one, I can't follow it)
* The Sopranos (the people all look the same to me, even the women)
* Sex in the City (Sarah Jessica Parker is so homely, she's painful to watch)
* Everybody Loves Raymond (no, not everybody - some of us can't stand him)

We don't hae HBO, so I've never even seen Sex in the City or The Sopranos, but I have to concur on the Sarah Jessica Parker thing. She's so annoying, too. Her whole shtick is, "Hey I'm petulant!"

Touched by an Angel -- I saw that a few times and thought I might die of saccharine overload. Buh. Guh. Urgh.

ELR is tolerable, I guess. I only watch the last few minutes because something or other comes on after it, so I somehow manage to see the last few minutes every time.

I also don't get the ER thing. I don't watch ER. I've tried to watch it a few times, and I find it to be very boring. Law and Order, too. You'd think I might like it, but I don't. Ice T is amusingly bad in that one that he's in, though.

7th Heaven! I can only assume that it touches on some sweet, nice little morality thing that people appreciate. I find it disgusting, because I am mean like that.

<< I find it disgusting, because I am mean like that. >>

I have only seen clips of SITC, but that was enough to convince me that I can't watch it. SJP is SO gross.

We do watch ER, and I like it because I like the characters (Luka, yum). We also watch the original Law and Order, but we never got into the off-shoots, like the one Ice T is on. We have seen them a couple of times, but they never really 'took'.
From: [info]muridae
Date: 12/11/2002 5:25:52 PM

Maybe if I got into ER in the beginning, I'd be able to watch it, but instead I never have any idea what's going on.

Sarah Jessica Parker is kinda horselike. Also, her fashion sense frightens me.

Ice T is a very bad actor. That's all I can say about that.

Holy smoke... Renee..

*My wife and I are CONSTANTLY saying "Um, NOOOOOO, NOT everyone loves raymond! We hate him!"
*Touched by an angel is just sappy.
*The Sopranos is the most overrated show on TV. Period. Totally inauthentic (is that a word?).
*I've never watched The West Wing so I don't know about it.
*Sex In The City I actually watch with Helene. The first few seasons were pretty good actually. It was decent, no-brainer entertainment. But the last 2 seasons have sucked. I agree with you about SJP.. she's rough lol.

What are the shows you DO like? Mine are/were:
*The X-Files - Amazing writing and filming. Like watching a movie every week.
*Seinfeld - Do I really need to explain why?
*Friends - No-brainer entertainment that actually has characters you can like!

Peace,

* I used to like the X-Files, though I stopped watcheng after Ducovney left.
* I LOVE Seinfeld. I still watch the reruns on Fox.
* Friends - we never ever miss it - great characters, esp Chandler. I would marry Chandler.
* Frasier - great show, we rarely miss it.
* I miss Dharma & Greg, I really liked that show.
* Drama - we watch ER and NYPD Blue, usually Law & Order.
* News - The O'Reilly Factor and Hannity & Colmes on Fox News Channel.
* Home Improvement - we are addicted to Trading Spaces on TLC.
* Cartoons - Ren & Stimpy and Rocko's Modern Life.

-Dave
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 12/10/2002 3:58:40 PM

Well, it isn't *quite* as bad as it sounds, because like with reading, I find it really hard to pay attention to most shows. Rusty laughs at me, because I never know if I'm watching a rerun, because I paid so little attention the first time. We're watching Steven Speilberg's Taken (a mini-series) on Sci-Fi right now, and I usually watch it the current episode at 9 and again at 11pm, and STILL can't follow the damned thing! It's Short Attention Span Theater, here. LOL

As for Hannity & Colmes, it depends on the issue, really. I like a lot of Sean's points, but he comes off as fanatical and politically-right-whether-it's-right-or-not to me sometimes. Conversely, I like some of [can't think of his first name] Colme's points too, but he seems to make them rather weakly at times. I think politically, I am more like Bill O'Reilly than either of them. What about you?
From: [info]freethinkernj
Date: 12/10/2002 4:08:49 PM

Short Attention Span Theater... now that is laughs! I know you've said you have a hard time concentrating. I wish I had some advice for ya, but I don't know much about ADD. :(

How is Taken? Is it as good as it looks in the commercials?

I tend to agree with you. I find myself agreeing with Hannity 85% of the time. Like you said, once in awhile he comes off a bit 'too fanatical' and just goes 'right' for the sake of going 'right'. Colme's points are almost always weak. He gets crushed by Hannity on almost every issue because like you said, he has good points sometimes but presents them poorly. He also strikes me as going 'left' for the sake of going 'left'.

I like Bill O'Reilly because he is no-nonsense. So yet again, I agree with you! LOL

We should be best friends, we agree on almost everything! LOL

-Dave
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 12/10/2002 5:04:06 PM

Taken - the plot is really good, but I have two problems with it:

* The fake aliens are REALLY cheesy. I try not to harp on that point too much though, since I've never seen real aliens for comparison - for all I know, real aliens may look every bit as cheesy as the fake ones. ;)

* They jump around too much. They show several families being affected by the aliens and/or the military people tracking the aliens, and they jump from short scene to short scene showing what the different people are up to. It is an ongoing saga, from the 50's until now, so sometimes characters are rapidly aged from night to night, and I often don't recognise who's who from one episode to the next. It's better now (in the 1980's) than it was when it was the 1950's and all the characters looked the same to me. I find it really hard to follow, though a lot of that may just be me.

Talking heads - yeah, Hannity has a lot of good points, but it bothers me when people *always* take the republican (or the democrats) side, just because they're a republican or a democrat. My grandmother is like that; she's a republican, and it doesn't matter what the republicans say, they're automatically right, and democrats are automatically wrong. I can't do that, just like I could never vote straight-ticket, because there ARE shades of grey. Colmes (dammit, what is his name?) is a little too passive for me, but more than that, I just don't think he's a particularly good debator. I would like to see him replaced with James Carvel.

You know what surprises me, since we're on the subject? The fact that Bill O stays with the Catholic church. He is SO vocal about childrens' issues otherwise (it's the only time he ever loses is, when he talks about cases of child abuse), and yet, even though he has called for harsher punishment of abusive priests, he still stays with the church. It seems to me that he would leave, as sticking with them is in effect condoning it. As far as I know, there aren't a lot of aspects of Catholicism that can't be found in other Christian churches, so why stay and support such nonsense? Weird...
From: [info]freethinkernj
Date: 12/10/2002 6:34:58 PM

Yeah I hear ya. It's been VERY hard for me to not rip the church in my journal. I guess I feel it would be utterly disrespectful to the people who have deep ties to it. BUT, in saying that, i agree with you 100% about Bill O. Just remember though, even though a lot of aspects of Catholicism can be found in other Christian churches, many catholics (including the pope himself) believe the catholic church to be the ONLY church - and that other churches are apostate. So when you're brought up believing that, it's VERY hard to leave it - though i agree that personal principles should take presidence over church loyalty.

From: [info]purple_stardust

Oooh, I'm making EASY stuff!!! Seriously, I am into 5-minute crafts.

The marble magnets; you buy a bag of those flattened marbles (we always called them glass blobs) at the craft or pet store, glue a tiny picture on the back, and glue a magnet to that. Voila! Here is a site where you can see the finished result: http://megan.scatterbrain.org/notmartha/tomake/marblemagnets.html - so cute!

The AOL tins are equally easy: spray paint inside and out, line the bottom with a piece of felt, glue a pretty picture to the top, cover with Mod Podge (it's like a thin white glue), and you're done! Here is the finished product: http://quidnunc.org/aol_tin.html - very nice, and you can even throw in a book of nice stamps that would interest the giftee (my mom, for example, is getting one with a bat on the top and bat stamps inside). The same thing can be done to Altoids tins, and then you can put about six coordinating marble magnets in there, and you have a nice gift! :)

[why i hate the telephone] 12/11/2002 11:00:00 AM

purple_stardust

I remember now why I always leave my computer online. I logged off last night, in case Rusty needed to call into work, since we're getting freezing rain today.

I was awakened by the damned plastic portal of hell first thing this morning. A woman, who I did not know, said "hello!" in a voice far too perky for that time of day. I asked her if she had a particular reason for waking me up. She got out "I'm from MCI" before I told her that I wasn't interested and hung up.

About an hour later, the wretched thing rang AGAIN. It was another woman, who cut to the chase and asked "Can I speak to Renee Ludwig?" I said "No!" and hung up.

So I am going to look into getting a cable connection so I can tell Verizon to stick it up their asses, because apparently, if you have a phone, people think they're entitled to call you on it at any time, whether they know you or not, and I've had it. If I wanted to actually talk to people, I would get a job, or friends, or something. Bah.

I am a bit cranky this morning.

Growl. I'm pissed off just thinking about it now. :P

I can't really apply the second coat of paint to the tins in this weather. I can't make marble magnets because I need a 1/2" hole punch and better (silicon) glue to do them right, and preferabley better glass blobs, as these from the pet store have bubbles and inclusions in them. I could make more paper, but I am waiting for my roses to dry; I want to make pink paper with red rose petals in it. I could paint ornaments, but I don't feel like it. I could bead my candlesticks, but I would have to change the design, as mine are different than the ones I bought for my mom. Blah.

On the other hand, I could do something useful, like clear off the table or do the dishes, but somehow I doubt that will happen. I want to take a nap.

[the view] 12/12/2002 11:15:00 AM

A discussion on The View just caught my attention. It started out as a dicussion of religious symbols; what was, what wasn't, and what should be displayed and where.

And then Barbara Walters pulled out a Christmas card that she had recieved from President and Mrs Bush. It had a piano on the front, and a verse from Psalms inside. The debate was whether it was right that the card had a biblical message in it.

Now, I'm no fan of the Bushes, but they are Christians, and if they want to include "something biblical" in their holiday greetings, why not? The argument was, he is "our" president, and should therefore be sending out cards that are appropriate to everyone. Well, for starters, there are no cards that are appropriate to everyone. Secondly, as far as I know, you don't sign away your holidays and your religion when you take the oath. And third, don't we all have more pressing things to worry about?

Cards: If the Bushes paid for them, they can say whatever they want. If the taxpayers paid for them, then they should not endorse a religion because it's the president, not the Christian holder of that office, who's sending the card.

But I certainly agree that there are much more important things to be worrying about! And choosing something from Psalms, as opposed to something Jesus-centric, seems like a reasonable attempt to be inclusive. Heck, you could probably choose plenty of things from Psalms that don't even mention God! (I don't know if he did.) If that's the case, then I suppose the objection is that the bible actually wrote it down and that's somehow bad, which I think is silly. Wisdom doesn't cease to be wisdom just because a source you find objectionable recorded it.

Yeah, and she never said WHO paid for them. I think the particular Psalm DID mention G-d, but it wasn't particularly 'strong', for lack of a better word, and certainly not specifically Christian. It was tasteful and fairly generic.

From: [info]purple_stardust

I love the Psalms too, and as I said above, there was nothing overtly Christian about the card. One of the woman brought up the athiests, but I think G-d -whether it's right or wrong- is already part of the government vernacular, so a mention in a holiday card from the president shouldn't be an issue.

The roads were good today, so I went to AC Moore and bought all sorts of crafty goodness! I bought Mod Podge, felt, silicon glue, more glass blobs, a 1/2" punch, magnets, more silver and blue seed beads, and a set of crystal candle sticks to bead.

And I stopped at Weis and got groceries but that was boring. I bought three cans of tuna; one in each major brand (all kosher) to see which one I like the best because when I figure it out I will go buy cans and cans and cans of it because that is what I am going to be eating now: tuna and mustard. I also bought Pepperidge Farm Jewish Rye - no idea what makes it particularly Jewish, but it had seeds in it, so I bought it. And I bought a clear purple stapler, because, well, it was purple.

Now I am home, and I shouldn't have to go out again for days and days, and that is a very good thing. Also, I have lots of hot coffee, and life is very good right now. =)

I got out of bed to see Rusty off to work, and then took a nap on the sofa. I am a real ball of fire, I am. I should go and do something productive...

Oh! I exercised! This is Day 3 of using the AbSlide, 30 reps per day, until I get used to it again. My would-be abs hurt like hell, so I hope I am accomplishing more than just grinding stray Cheerios into the tacky shag carpet. After a week of this hell, I will go to 60 reps per day, and then 90. I will lose this baby belly.

Also, since I am dieting and not eating what I like anyway, I think I am going to try to keep more kosher - I could use the dicipline. Besides, no meat and cheese together means no meat, so there go some calories right off the bat. And if nothing else, it forces me to think about what I'm shoving into my mouth. And I really need to buy a bathroom scale; we don't have one. It will be hard to tell if any of this worked, if I don't know where I was out to begin with. Maybe this evening when Rusty gets home.

George: Oooooh, the ego on you. Who's gonna bomb you?

I have it narrowed down to these types: Acara, Aisha, Blumaroo, Draik, Kau, Korbat, Krawk, Kyrii, Meerca, Shoyru, Tonu, Wocky, or Zafara. I have looked at them all in purple, and all of them are cute. Now I need to just choose one, which no doubt will take hours and hours. Yes. My brain has been stolen by Neopets.

I don't know what the fuck is wrong with me today. All I want to do is use fucking Adobe ImageReady to make an animated icon. I have never tried to make an animated icon before, but it seems like a simple enough process. I created the image I wanted for a background, and duplicated it into several frames. The problem is, every time I change something in one of the frames, it changes in ALL of the frames. I don't know what the fuck I am doing wrong, but I do know that screaming, crying, and pounding on one's computer monitor does no fucking good. Being so fucking incompetant wouldn't distress me so much if I was really trying to do something challenging, but this isn't rocket science. I just want a simple fucking animated icon.

Hey renee...
Doesn't adobe have a help section or a manual to walk you through it? I wish I could help, but I've never used adobe. :( Did you perhaps 'cut and paste' the image in a way that one change to one frame actually affects all the frames? Just a thought. Good luck though.
-Dave
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 12/17/2002 1:44:38 PM

I haven't tried the help thingie yet - I think that's what is pissing me off the most - I am usually GOOD at this sort of thing. I usually don't NEED a manual. I haven't looked at a manual since DOS. I am annoyed that I don't have some innate knowledge of how to make animated gifs without a manual. Bah.

Anyway. There was a button to duplicate the current frame (the Neopets icon above). I did that, and what I THOUGHT I could do was change the colour of each letter, in turn, to make it appear to be blinking. However, every time I changed a letter, the colour changed in ALL the frames. I thought I could even make separate layers with just the text that changed in each layer, but I couldn't find a way to create an empty frame. :\

I guess the official colors are Platinum (silver), white and 'Glacier' - sort of a translucent blue.
(I have a 'Glacier' one.)

Target has a 'special edition' fire-engine red one that looks somewhat horrible.

My big hope is to get that Gamecube piece that allowed you to play GBA cartridges on your Gamecube. Since there are so many Super Nintendo 16-bit titles released on GBA, it'll be retro-gaming paradiso!

Ewww, red would be nasty! I have the pink one from Japan (I think they have it here now too). It's okay, but I would much rather have purple. In fact, unless I want to play a GBA game (and I only have two), I still use my old Atomic Purple GBC.

How is Gamecube? Any good RPGs?
From: [info]the_never

There is a pink translucent one! I forgot.

There is only one good rpg for Gamecube- and it just came out and I haven't tried it yet. (Evolution Worlds).

However, Animal-Crossing is really cute and has roleplaying elements to it. It's more like the Sims, though.

I like Gamecube a lot actually. They released the Sonic Mega-Collection as a single disk, and it has Sonic, Sonic II, Sonic & Knuckles, and like 6 other Sonic titles, plus bonus titles if you unlock them. I've only unlocked an 8-bit version of 'Flicky' so far, despite the fact that I used to be able to beat Sonic the Hedgehog without a problem. Also, Phantasy Star Online is coming out for Gamecube next year..

Metroid Prime is very nice to look at, too.

I have one of those contraptions, they don't work like you think they do.

1) You have to have a compatible GC game,
2) You have to have the GBA Version of the game
(To the best of my knowledge Sonic (GC) and Sonic Advance (GBA) are e only compitable games right now)

You use it more like a link cable, to trade things back and forth, in Sonic you trade the little creatures to train them like High-tech Tomagachi, cuz you can train them on the GameCUbe but you can take them with you if you have that cable.

P.S. I sold my Gamecube but not my GBA and I still have that cable, it's from Nyko an aftermarket company, but ya want it?

yanno this is really creepy because I was JUST talking to one of my friends about how much cooler it would be if GBA had a good purple color, better than the Indigo color.

I KNOW!!! And you know, it's kinda stupid on their part, because I'm pretty sure that AP was probably the most popular GBC colour. I know when I see GBC accessories for sale, they're usually AP. I would buy a solid purple, but the clear purple would make me deleriously happy, and I would be inclined to buy more GBA games. I only have two now (Sonic and Mario) because I would still rather play my Atomic Purple GBC.

How gross is this?

Your heart rules your reason, it speaks to you on the basis of your life and on everything. Decsions, instructions everything you go with your heart, this allows you to be compassionate, caring, and full of emotion, which allows you to excel in the arts: writing, poetry, anything, is your fortay, what your heart cannot express by mouth, you express in words, or picture, you take deep appreciation of music and the like, it seems to just take a grasp of the things that nothing else can seem to. You are a deep person, thinking on abstract ideals and concepts, and when inspiration comes to you it comes like a torrential wave, crashing into your world and opening your heart like a storm. But it also tends to make you thin-skinned, allowing things to hurt you that much easier, your kindness and compassion allows you to be easily taken advantage of, you tend to be shifty in your decsions, depending on what your heart may wish or hold, this can make you seem unreliable, even though it may not hold true. Do not lose the words that your heart may speak, for it is a valuable gift to have, but do not let it rule you, for the mind has reason, where the heart has none.

Which rules you, your heart, the constant contemplations of the mind,
or the reality of existance?

Please excuse the fluffiness of my posts lately. I feel compelled to post quizzes and polls and goofy Neopets stuff because if I wrote about what was really on my mind, I would probably cry, or throw up, or something equally uncool.

This weekend, I have to go with Rusty to his parents' house in Pennsylvania; it is their 50th wedding anniversary, and they are having a family dinner. The very thought of it literally fills me with dread. His parents are nice, but I hate going up there. Part of it is simply a matter of I hate to leave the house. Part of it is that I am not comfortable in the large family setting. And part of it is, I can't stand Rusty when he's around his brothers. One of them is okay, the ex-Navy pilot. One of them is just loud and obnoxious, and talks only of football. The third is a murderer.

Now, I could stand being in a room with a murderer. I could even manage to be civil to a man who is so callous or so fucked-up or so something, that he shot his own brother in the chest. His sins are only between he and G-d, right? Not when my daughter is concerned, no. His wife thinks it's terribley cute to see her husband hold a baby. The problem is, her husband is a murderer and the baby is my daughter.

The other thing is, this family has a habit of segregating. The men go in one room and watch or talk about football for hours. The women congregate in the kitchen and discuss such fascinating topics as cooking and carpeting. I don't give a rat's ass about cooking or carpeting. I don't cook, and my carpet is covered in aspen shavings.

I don't know. I guess I will do what I always do: take my Gameboy and try to ignore them until it's time to go home. But I will feel sick until this travesty is over.

Steelers are my fave too, Pens are okay not a big hockey guy. The Pitts Zoo is okay, but too expensive. St. Louis Zoo is free

1) I am like 35 Min north of Pittsburgh
2) I Like Pittsburgh better than my home town.

St. Louis is a bit far to drive to see the lions. ;)

Sabotage the car! Cut the brake lines. You won't even make it off your block, to say nothing of Pennsylvania. You'll just hit the other cars while trying to leave your parking spot. It's foolproof.

Family sucks.

If you could have any job in the universe, fictional or otherwise, what would you want to do?

Job, ewww! Hmmm... I was going to say veterinarian, but then realised that I could never euthanise an animal. Also, puss, blood, and vomit set off my gag reflex, so I don't think I could be a very effective vet. That being the case, I think I would want Jack Hanna's job - playing with cute wild animals without any of the yucky stuff. Otherwise, I would want to be Batgirl.

What's the difference between a helix piercing and a regular cartilage piercing? I'm curious. I just got a 16 gauge cartilage piercing in my left ear on Friday.
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 12/18/2002 11:59:23 PM

The helix is the same as your regular cartilage piercing... I think the term is mostly used to differentiate it from other cartilage-type piercings, like industrials and such.

How cool for you! I wish now that I had gone to a 'real' piercer and gotten mine done in larger gauge. I never had any problem with healing or anything, but all the cool jewelry is larger than my holes, and tapering cartilage looks REALLY freaking painful!
From: [info]blairmaru
Date: 12/19/2002 12:22:39 AM

Re:

I have an old, regrettable, badly placed, crooked cartilage gun piercing that I can't stand, and decided the other day that I needed a real one. The piercing itself was shockingly painless, WAY less than the gun piercing, but it BLED. The piercer overgauges cartilage piercings to allow room for swelling, so for my 16 gauge ring, she used a 14 guage needle. For the time being I've just got a plain stainless steel cbr in. I'll probably switch to niobium when it's healed. I at least want to change the bead to black or purple or some sort of gemstone.
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 12/19/2002 12:28:24 AM

That's cool to be able to change just the beads! I was thinking the other day, I should get some replacement balls for my naval piercing, for some variety until it completely heals and I can change it.

I took Rusty to work, came back, and promptly fell asleep on the sofa. When I woke up, I went to the post office and the bank. It seemed like a long drive today, and while I drove, I contemplated the existance of G-d - more on that later, maybe.

Afterwards, we stopped at the mall where I got a birthday gift and a card for my mom. The Hallmark there had a TON of Hanukkah stuff marked down, and I bought a gift bag, some tags, and napkins to decopage, and even a Jewish bear for Sarah.

We stopped at Petsmart. Usually the clerk asks you what sort of pet you have, when you buy pet food. Like, when I buy Nutro for the rats, they always ask what sort of dog I have. Today I was buying dog food (for the rats), seed mix and yoggies (for the rats), cat food (for the cats), ferret food (for my mom's ferrets), and crickets (for the gecko). The clerk didn't ask today! She probably assumed that I ran a zoo.

And I stopped at the craft store, where I bought a ton of the small glass blobs, and some of the larger ones too, and a bunch of magnets, and a different kind of glue.

After I stopped at Sheetz for milk and cigarettes, I came HOME, hooray! I still need to go to the supermarket and pay bills tomorrow, unfortunately, but for now I am just thrilled to be home with my coffee and my computer. I am so calling Papa John's this evening, even though must-see-tv is rerun-tv tonight. But I'm home!

I am always amused when I buy dog food for the rats, cat food for the crickets, worms for the turtles, and fish food (shock!!!) for the fish. They must assume... well, I don't know what they assume.

And the supermarket is even more fun, because I buy all these vegetables with the intent of giving them all to the animals...
From: [info]purple_stardust

I don't even try to explain to them anymore, that the expensive Nutro is only for the rats... my actual dogs get the cheap supermarket dog food! And the stuff that I buy for them at the supermarket is even worse - fruits, vegetables, chicken - all for the rats, while we eat mac and cheese and tv dinners!

This will no doubt sound insane to people who don't know me, but whatever.

I love animals, and it breaks my heart to see them killed. I hate seeing animals that are killed on the road, and I hate being a part of their deaths. I hate it so much that I remember every single time that I've ever seen an animal hit by a car...

When I was small, my grandmother ran over a cat. I'm sure it wasn't her fault, but I was distraught. I still remember the exact place that it happened, and whenever I come back from the bank, I take that road, and I always think about that poor cat.

Also when I was a kid, my neighbour's little dog was hit by a car. We saw it happen and I will never forget that awful noise that the dog made.

When I was dating my first husband, he hit a deer. Fortunately, he had this Dodge Omni with a plastic hood, and so the deer sort of bounced off of the hood and ran away, apparently uninjured. Still, it was a horrifying incident.

The last time was the worst - I was driving, and I hit a rabbit. Again, I remember the exact spot in the road, who I was with, and where we were going. I also remember bawling for hours, and feeling actively miserable and guilty for months, and still sad about it when I think of it now. I killed an innocent bunny rabbit, and even though it was an accident, I don't think I have ever done anything that made me feel worse.

What does all of this have to do with G-d, you ask? Because since the bunny episode when I was 18, I have never hit an animal. In fact, they almost never run out in front of my car! Even when I go to my mom's house in the woods, or my grandmother's who lives out in the country, even though I often drive too fast on these roads, animals seem to stay clear of my car. I am convinced that G-d DOES exist, and that he is keeping me from hitting the animals because it would probably make me crazy if I hit another one, or I would wreck the car to avoid it.

Anyway, that is my personal proof that G-d exists, and is watching out for me.

Not to be critical but accidents do happen! So don't let it affect your whole spiritual well-being..

Actually- I do understand what you are saying, and I am also the only person in my family who hasn't hit a deer yet. When I was 19 or so, a dog ran out in front of my car on FM 1960 (in Texas) and I hit it and I felt terrible. That stretch of road was like a highway- we were going very fast, and I still managed to swerve a little, but I saw it get hit again by the car behind me.

I think thats the only animal I've ever killed.
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 12/20/2002 1:06:31 PM

The deer around here are awful, and I swear they're the dumbest animals on the planet. As for the dog, I see a lot of dogs and cats killed on the smaller highways here, and I always wonder why people would keep their pets outside when they live so close to a road like that. In cases like that, I blame the owners. :(
From: [info]allmyvoices
Date: 12/20/2002 5:13:36 AM

I have more proof of G-d which has to do with animals and cars. I hope it doesn't upset you... keep reading it to the end and you'll see G-d in it for sure.

One time SweetP and I were on the way to work and we drove by a rabbit on the side of the road. I could swear I saw it's head move so I told SweetP to stop. At first, she thought I was crazy and I was only going to upset myself by stopping. But I convinced her to stop, jumped out of the car and... the bunny was alive.

So we went to a nearby grocery store and called the vet. He said to just leave it there, that it would probably die from shock if we put it in the car. There was just no way I could leave him there. So I asked one of the employees at the store for a box, rushed back to the bunny and got him into the car.

Well, he survived. He had brain damage so he couldn't go free and we kept him. We named him Robert Rabbit and called him Bubba Bunny. He was a sweetie. He ended up living twice as long as the average life span for bunnies in the wild.

Here is the G-d part...

The evening of the day Bubba died, I went into the backyard and a goose flew literally right over my head and a minute later, a bunny came into the yard and ate as if she was totally oblivious I was there.

I took that to be a thank you from Bubba... and a sign that there is somewhere we move on to when we die... even wild rabbits.

So don't ever doubt that those animals you saw didn't make it to heaven. G-d is there and Mother Nature truly exists.

[a letter to santa] 12/19/2002 9:35:00 PM

Dear Santa,

I have been a good girl.

It really wasn't my fault what happened at Laurie's Christmas party. It was Joell who spiked the punch with too much vodka. I can't help it if I drank 25 glasses. It was so good---smelled and tasted just like rat pee.

I thought it was funny when I put Sandy's socks on my head and danced the waltz on the desk while singing `The Laughing Gnome'. I didn't mean to break Laurie's DVD player and don't know why Laurie would sue me for grand theft auto.

I don't remember calling Roscoe's wife a sleazy goat---even though she looked like one with purple eye shadow and green lipstick!

And when I threw up on Joell's husband's feet, it was only because I ate too much of that pizza.

After all that fun, I admit I was a little tired. So I fell asleep on my way home and drove my Thing through my neighbor's bedroom. I don't think that was any reason for my neighbor to call me a fuzzy monkey and have me arrested for embezzlement!

So, Santa...here I sit in my jail cell on Christmas Eve, all hyper and silly. And I'm really not to blame for any of this retarded stuff. Please bring me what I want the most---bail money!

Sincerely and sleepily yours,
Renee (Really a nice girl!)

P.S. It's only 37 bucks!

Write a letter to Santa!

Stupid weather punk on WJLA: Who wouldn't like a white Christmas?

I'll tell you who, stupid weather punk: people to have to drive their cars with bad tires all the way to their grandmother's house (over the hills and through the woods) on that day. Really, why would anyone want bad road conditions on one of the most busy travel days of the year?

[holiday blahs] 12/20/2002 11:30:00 PM

They say that the holidays are the most depressing time of the year. They are so right. For whatever fucked-up reason, Rusty has decided not to go to his parents' house this weekend. Which would be great, except he obviously wants to go, and is going to sulk now, because he didn't. So I asked him what he wanted for x-mas, to which he said that he didn't want anything, and we weren't 'doing' x-mas this year because I am converting, and that he's 'not bothered' ... except, I know he IS bothered, and will be sullen and cranky about that, too.

His scroodginess aside, I miss my tree and my ornaments and candles and lights and having fun shopping for presents together. I miss getting along. And what if I never even convert? I am the world's worst procrastinator; I just recently finally changed my drivers lisence and voters registration to my current address - I'd used my father's address from when I was 18 and got those things, and was too lazy to change them through two husbands and eight or nine moves! So what if I never get around to converting, and am losing these traditions for nothing? What if I am giving up photos of my daughter on Santa's knee for nothing?

Yeah. I am officially depressed.

Given that Santa is no more Christian than the easter Bunny (and in fact the modern Santa Claus in his red and white outfit is an invention of Coca-Cola anyway), I'd say to hell with it and get that gorgeous photo of your daughter on Santa's knee!

There's precious little of religion involved in Christmas these days anyway; the Christmas tree is a Pagan holdover from the days of the Druids, as is the traditional Yule Log. December 25th wasn't the birth day of Jesus anyway - it was the Roman feast day of Saturnalia. So celebrate it and enjoy it as the secular holiday it's become!

The relationship with Rusty is over. Christmas was the one thing that was consistantly beautiful for us, the one time we could be guaranteed to get along. It is over. It is all just fucking over. The appropriate jewelry has been removed. I will be looking for another place to live after the holidays - I don't want to ruin my mother's or grandmother's holiday by showing up on their doorstep before then. I am feeling very Godless today.

Have you tried talking to him? My relationship with my husband hasn't always been all sunshine and roses either, but eventually we always talk things over and try to work things out.

Yeah, I HAVE tried talking to him; that's how I know it's over. We communicate very poorly, but for the sake of Christmas, we usually try to be nice - it isn't working this year. :(

My left hand looks and feels so fucking naked. What IS the likelihood of me just dropping dead? I don't want to actively kill myself (I'm not that much of an asshole) but it would be so much better if I were gone. It's the only thing that would actually make him happy. Because that would be the easiest scenario. I wouldn't die Jewish, which would bug me, but this idiocy would end, and I swear, I think it would be worth it.

Rusty left; who knows where. It would be kinda funny if I committed suicide while he was gone. I mean, hey, if we're not having Christmas, it shouldn't be particularly traumatic if I did it now. We all knew I was going to eventually. I have a fifth most of a fifth of vodka; what do we have to go with it? There has to be some codeine or valium or something around here...

To go with that... we have the thought that yes, it might 'teach him a lesson' but you'd be hurting a lot of people who don't deserve it. You are important and special, call your mom, call anyone and scream and shout about the unfairness of life and whatever.. but ending it is useless, pointless. It might not feel like staying alive is the right thing now, or for a long time, but it is.

Renee, if you do this, Sarah is going to be on her own for an awful long while before someone finds her; God only knows when Rusty would come back. That's not fair on a lovely little princess like that; she doesn't understand why Christmas has all gone wrong. All she'll know is that the person who is the centre of her whole world is gone - fallen asleep and won't wake up, leaving her alone.

I don't think you'll do that to her...you love her too much to hurt her like that. Who will look after her? And the ratties, the kitties, the dogs...who will look after them?

Call your Mom, call Peter, call someone. But don't do this. Don't be on your own. I'm the other side of the ocean; I don't even know if you're going to read this - I sure hope you do. Because I was in your position once, and nearly left my two beautiful daughters alone and motherless. The only reason I didn't? My ex turned up for a surprise visit and saved me before my kids could see. If he'd been there just half an hour later, it would have been too late; and I thank god every day that Sava came over when he did.

Don't stay alone, Renee. Call someone, go somewhere - but don't do this.
Please.

I just got home and saw these posts, and all I can say is that I really, really hope that you have thought long and hard about all of the negative repurcussion that your death would being about; in the lives of your friends, your family, your children, and your pets. Even in the lives of your livejournal friends--I know I, for one, would be horrified and greatly saddened at such a loss. We all flirt with ideas like that at one time or another, but it is never, never the right idea. Never. I am positive that you would like to watch Sarah graduate from high school someday, possibly dance at her wedding, and maybe see your grandchildren. What on earth could be horrible enough for you to miss out on those things? Nothing! And I know that you don't know me except through my journal entries, but I'd be quite willing to talk you out of such nonsense via phone, if it came right down to it--503-708-5792.

Eh, don't look at it as caving in. You were the first one mature enough to decide to try to resolve things.

Besides, relationships aren't (or shouldn't be) a competition. It's not about who gives in first, it's about the end result.

* I'm also not so anal when I'm drunk. Not only did I leave in the dreadful mis-spellings, but also I let the posts land at any old time, instead of making them in five or ten minute increments like I usually do.

* You guys really are the best. Without making myself puke (again), I would like to note that you people are the best friends that I've ever had. I always say that I have no friends IRL, but while I can't really hang out at the mall with you all, or do whatever IRL friends do - I don't know, I really don't have any - you guys are more supportive than any of the IRL friends that I have had in the past. Rusty got me a beautiful picture frame and matching trinket box with Swarovski crystals, I got him the Led Zeppelin CD box set. Sarah got a Fisher Price zoo train, which seems to amuse her.

Also, the paternal unit dropped a card with money through the mail slot, so fortunately I did not have to see him. I'm sure he will spend the day being alone and bitter, which is basically what he deserves. I think I will use that money to take my mother out to dinner, and buy something ridiculously frivolous, because I know he would hate that. Heh.

It's still snowing. :(

I went to the supermarket and bought groceries, plus a few things for New Years - hard cheeses, cream cheese, caviar, crackers... now I just need to find an online source for smoked salmon. Then I stopped at the petstore and bought crickets for Jesus, the poor guy ran out yesterday. I looked at the comet goldfish, but decided not to get any, as there were dead or sickley ones in every tank. I wish I had a pond so I could keep koi. One of these days...

Also, my purple and black stripey stockings came in the mail this morning, so I am anxiously awaiting instructions from Laurie on how to turn them magically into gloves. *hint, hint*

You know...I got my fish at wal-mart, and it must have been sheer luck that I managed to get healthy ones. Every time I've been back since, there are always dead fish floating. This last time had to be the worst, and the tanks were so green & gross. I guess part of my luck came because the store had just become a supercenter, and everything was at its optimum.

They must vary wildly from store to store - I have heard some people say that they've gotten GREAT fish at their local Walmart, and others say that their Walmart's fish were awful. I personally hate Walmart and try to avoid it on general principle, lol.

If you were only closer, I'd let you have one of the babies. They're so cute, but 5 full grown black moors (if they wind up gargantuan like their parents) is just too many for a 44 gal. tank.

I am thinking about buying some Judaic art for the living room. The problem is, I know nothing about art in general*, much less Judaic art. Can anyone recommend an artist or two, or a website where I can browse some nice and preferably affordable prints?

* If left to my own devices, I would buy nothing but Heronimous Bosch and Edward Gorey. And yet, I know this is not a good way to decorate a family room.

Watercolor prints of Jerusalem are VERY popular and tasteful. They're affordable as well, and I found one example on the web here: http://www.israelvisit.com/shosh/

How about the skyline of Jerusalem?
http://cityskylineart.com/jeruselem.html

http://www.allposters.com/ has a bunch of stuff if you search 'judaica'. They have a print of Rembrandt's "The Rabbi".

Wonderful, thank you! I very much like the watercolours - and I think the lighter colours would be good in here, as the room tends to be very dark (stupid panelling). Also, that panorama of Jerusalem is way cool. I should find out how long it is and then measure my entertainment center, and figure out how compatable the two would be. Thanks! :)

Could someone tell me how much a smoked salmon should cost?

I finally ordered the smoked salmon from kosher.com, and also 18 challah rolls, plus some pickles and two kinds of olives from Israel. I don't think I'll order from them on a regular basis though - they have a great selection, but the shipping is outrageous.

Well, I am at another Neopets impasse. My zafara is cute and he has a purple petpet. I have build my lovely neohome. Now I need something else to do. I have started to level him up - he is already level 7, strength 12, defence 12, movement 12, max hp 6 - but I think he is still too puny to take into the BattleDome. I could try levelling him up more, but codestones and dubloons are expensive. I guess I will play games for a while, to earn neopoints. I want trophies, dammit.

Be sure to visit the shrine in the Lost Desert every day, too. That gives levels. *mutters* I ended up with really high levels, really low stats. I think Meechipuff's level 32 now. Oh, and fairy quests (random, but do them when you get them), spinning the Wheel of Fortune, and you can also occasionally get levels from the scratchcards.

Here I still sit, playing Neopets. In a fit of sheer lunacy, I decided to take on Punchbag Bob in the Battledome. Now Punchbag Bob, as his name infers, does not fight back. However, my baby zafara is puny, and Punchbag Bob will take forever to defeat. If Zootie_Z uses his Lightening Gun AND his Clockwork Quiggle AND scorch, he does 5hp damage per turn. Punchbag Bob has 5000 hit points. You do the math. I really really really need a sword.

I finally whooped up on him the other day and won...but I did it with Jitiger, my kougra. He is was only able to do a maximum of 21hp (but no less than 12 hp) damage per turn using his two lost dessert daggers. He still needs more training though before I let him beat up on real players.

[random thoughts] 12/30/2002 4:55:00 PM

* I took a nap but I'm still sleepy.

* Gayle King is on Oprah and they're talking about Gayle's prerequisite that the guys she dates be taller than she is (5'10", holy crap), because she likes a guy that makes her feel small. I broke up with my second husband because he made me feel fat. I weighed about 100 pounds at the time. Self-perception is a very odd thing.

* My old favourite shirt has been retired. It was a rayon button-up shirt that I liked to wear unbuttoned over a tee-shirt. If you've ever gotten a rat from me, you've probably seen my old favourite shirt. It was getting old; it was blue when I bought it used, and I bleached it so it was yellow, and then I dyed it green, and finally purple. Between the wear and tear of bleaching and dying, combined with age and rats' natural propensity to chew, the shirt was starting to show its age. Rest in peace, old favourite shirt.

* I have a new favourite shirt! This one is a purple velvet button-up shirt that I like to wear unbuttoned over a tee-shirt. I bought it at Kmart to wear to my grandma's, and I really like it! I don't usually like cheap velvet, but this feels really nice, inside and out. It's a gorgeous shade of royal purple, and so soft, and it's got some stretch to it, so I can push the sleeves up and they stay up without rolling. I hope it holds up in the wash.

* I wish I had some chocolate milk.

I saw Oprah today, too. You're right, our perceptions of ourself can be really off.

But Gayle, being 5'10" is taking a lot of good guys off the field because she wants to feel small, ya know?
From: [info]grimkitten_
Date: 12/30/2002 11:51:31 PM

Being 5'11" myself I know what she means. No way will I go out with a guy who is shorter than me, you see how this limits the fish in the sea. I dont feel feminine around shorter guys, especially if they are shorter AND thin.

Having determined that no way in hell will my smoked salmon* from kosher.com be here by New Year's Eve (tomorrow, I think), I went out to Weis and bought some more. Happily, they had it on sale - buy one get one free! And I have chocolate milk now, so life is good.

* However, it will be a well-traveled salmon when it DOES get here... it left Philadelphia PA (about four hours from here), and travelled to Kentucky to Seattle WA! I hope it comes back to the east coast soon; I would rather like to eat it before it decides to go abroad.

And in more exciting news (not really), I had decided to take out the curved barbell and let my navel piercing close up. It just gets on my nerves, always in the way of my pants, if I had sex it would be in the way, etcetera. So I unscrewed one end and pulled it out. Then, just for shits and giggles, I tried putting back in... and it worked! I didn't figure it would. So anyway, now that I know I can change it easily enough, I may hold off on removing it right now, and search for less-snaggable jewellry, instead. Maybe a circular barbell or something?

I went to the bank, blah blah blah.

I came home to find the salmon sitting quietly on my doorstep, even though UPS tracking claims that it's still in Washington state. Whatever.

Jamie came over and hooked all my video games back up.

Rusty came home and told me that he's been laid off work for the rest of the year.

I went to the local mall to buy Lunar Legend for GBA and a circular barbell for my navel, but found neither. I hate this town. I hate this town. I hate this town.
