I'm such a 'tard sometimes. It occured to me yesterday, in the middle of this housing mess, my freaking uncle is a realtor. You know why this occured to me? Because said uncle emailed me and basically said "Hey, remember me, your uncle? I'm a realtor."

Otherwise, I would probably still be sitting here, wondering who I could talk to about getting a house. Yeah. So anyway, I gratefully accepted his help, he gave me the name of a good lender, and the right names to drop, and I'm calling them tomorrow.

On a related note, my uncle is one cool old guy! He is in his late 70's, survived Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge in WW2, as well as stomach cancer and several heart attacks, and still has a job as a realtor and a new lady friend! He's a busy guy... :}

I want a goldfish pond... because then, instead of fancy goldfish, I could buy baby koi, and keep them in the tank until they get bigger, and then put them out in the pond! A pond would definately rock.

where do you live, exactly? that architecture is gorgeous, but we don't have anything like it here in FL...
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 4/3/2003 9:55:05 AM

Isn't it awesome? We live in the eastern panhandle of WV; and with the exception of the new subdivisions, most of our architecture is like this! Well, we actually have two types of cool architecture: Civil War era (there was a lot of action around here, and I know a couple of people whos homes were actually used as hospitals during the war!), and then houses like this one (Victorian, I think?). This particular house was built in 1909! :)

Ooh, turret! I wonder what's in the round room?

Ours contains a bathroom, which was perhaps not the best inspiration.

From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 4/3/2003 5:29:19 PM

I absolutely LOVE turrets!!!

I'm assuming that it's a bedroom - all three bedrooms and the bath are upstairs, and bathrooms usually don't have that many windows. I'm *hoping* that it's the master bedroom, and that my plants will be going there. :)

Wow, your house is lovely! When was it built?
From: [info]cellio
Date: 4/4/2003 11:58:58 AM

Hmm, you're right. With all those windows, it's got to be a bedroom.

Our house was built in "approximately" 1910. Which is to say, the paperwork didn't give us an exact date (1910 was the seller's claim), but we know it was built before 1913 because we found a survey from that year that shows the house.

The county seems to think it was built in 1920. It's their survey, so they should know better, but when have bureaucracies ever been efficient?

Comments:
From: [info]catmoran
Date: 4/3/2003 10:09:59 PM

When Sprint laid my dad off, I cancelled my long distance and cell service with them. Bwahaha.

I'm with AT&T cellular now. I chose them because they start their "nights" at 8pm, afaik that's an hour earlier than anyone else in this market. I had great service until the ice storm in December, since then the service to my apartment hasn't been quite as good. Otherwise they're great.

I use em, they're okay.
From: [info]katarina42
Date: 4/3/2003 10:14:00 PM

We use Sprint PCS. It's pretty good. The thing I don't really like is how the "unlimited" night minutes of the night and weekend minutes don't start until 9PM central. If you make a call at 8:59 PM, it won't kick over automatically into night minutes - it goes on your limited daytime minutes :-P Of course if you go over on your daytime minutes for the month, the bill goes up quite a bit. I'm not sure about any other fees - there isn't one for using voice mail that I know of, but I think there's a charge to access the web on your phone.
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 4/4/2003 11:05:22 AM

That kinda sucks about the time thing, though I'm as likely to call someone after 9pm as I am after 8pm (not very).
The 8:59 thing is very handy to know though, thanks!

Cool. I know you have a waiting list, but maybe you could stick me on it? GMR has gotten a hold of me pretty hard lately...
From: [info]muridae
Date: 4/4/2003 12:03:04 AM

I use Sprint PCS. I've been happy with it. Except for up in the mountains, where the service is kinda unreliable, I've been able to use my phone just about anywhere I go, which is great. There aren't really any hidden charges. There's a $4.82 charge monthly for "Taxes, Surcharges, and other Regulatory Charges," which they only started adding to the bill recently. Oh, and I believe when I signed up for their service, the night/weekend hours lasted from 8PM to 8AM (which was a big factor in my choosing them), but now it's 9PM-7AM, which made for a really huge phone bill one month when I was calling people after 8 PM but before 9, thinking that my night minutes started at 8. Like, a HUGE phone bill.

But I have no complaints about their service. My phone isn't working correctly, but that's not Sprint's fault. So I guess I'd recommend them.

Oh! If you sign up for one of their special plans (like free long distance or whatever it is they're offering this month), you have to sign up for a year and if you cancel your service before the year is up you have to pay a $150 penalty. If you plan on switching providers it's probably not a good idea, but I've never had a problem with it because I've never cancelled my service.
From: [info]closertofine
Date: 4/4/2003 7:33:32 AM

We have AT&T. We got it originally because they had a shared minutes plan (and unlimited between the two phones), but now Husband has a cell phone from work. I kept it so I didn't have to change my number. But I have been very happy with the service so far.
One of my friends is getting ready to get Sprint because they also have some kind of unlimited minutes between family deal.

1. How many houses/apartments have you lived in throughout your life?

Wow. I need to break this one into sections to even figure it out. When I was a small child, I think we moved three times before buying the house on Oak Street (where my father still lives). When I moved out of that house, it was to Maryland, where I lived with husband-to-be #1. We moved back to this area and lived in two places before I traded him for husband-to-be #2. I moved with him into a mobile home, which later burned down. After that fiasco, I moved back in with my parents for a while, and then moved in with the Psycho Boyfriend. I escaped from PB's house and got my own apartment for the first time ever in 1995. Rusty moved in soon after, and since then, we have lived in two other apartments, including this one. So 13 or 14, I think.

2. Which was your favorite and why?

The house on Oak Street. I love that house. It's a brick cape cod with an awesome yard.

3. Do you find moving more exciting or stressful? Why?

Stressful. I have way too much stuff to be moving it from place to place.

4. What's more important, location or price?

Location, location, location.

5. What features does your dream house have (pool, spa bath, big yard, etc.)?

Wood floors (no vacuuming!), big rooms, lots of storage, a nice yard, a goldfish/koi pond.

I just looked at the house and thought it looked haunted! However, once we were IN there, my mom said that she "sensed" it, plus Rusty said it was freezing in a way that he's only come across in his late grandparents' house, after his grandfather died. Even the realtor noticed that it felt weird, lol! I don't mind it though; it wasn't a creepy BAD feeling, or anything.

Have you heard of Susan Crites, who has written a couple of books about West Virginia ghosts? My mom hangs out with her, so if we really get the place, I want to get her to come in and see if she can tell anything. :)

Found out more about Gertrude - my mom's co-worker knew the family when she was younger. According to her, Gertrude was little and bossy... no wonder I can relate to her! Elsie said that she was nice though, just kinda mouthy. She walked with a limp. Her husband J Nelson was tall and thin and very quiet. They only had the one daughter, later in life.

Found out from realtor that the seller (Gertrude's daughter) has cancer, and not long to live, hence the sudden and dramatic drop in price, the selling "as is", and the push to sell quickly - they want to sell while she's still alive to sign the papers. Otherwise it goes into estate property, and will cost them a lot more. How sad, to have your mother dying, and spending your last weeks together with lawyers and realtors. So much for quality time. :(

I recieved my new books from Amazon this morning, hooray... many fun things to think about.

My mom picked me up and I signed and cashed a ton of savings bonds for our down payment. Stopped at Sheetz to buy cigarettes and found the names of two different carpenters to call about potential closet-building. Stopped by lender and returned signed paperwork, paid $400 for house appraisel. Should know something in a few days. I hope.

Mailed horse-worming paste to Laurie. Because I care.

Came back here and opened birthday presents from Mom - she got me The League of Rats with Gustave Dore illustrations, a pink rubber duckie, and the uber-cool Gameboy Advance SP.

And then she took us out to El Ranchero for dinner, which is always yummy. :)

Went to the post office, recieved nothing fun. Went to the bank and deposited savings bond money. Went to Petsmart and bought weasel chow for my mom, and cat food, treats, toys, and new collars for the obnoxious felines. Stopped at shoe store and bought a pair of Rockports and a pair of Reeboks for Rusty - paid a grand total of $33.43 for both pairs because the shoelaces were missing. I feel better now for offering full price for the house.

Came home, got a late birthday card from my grandma. Still no letter from Rusty's investment dude - I hope that it comes this week. Re-instated auto insurance policy. Wrote a check for deposit in Rusty's checking account. Registered a domain name for Ron. Called my mother.

Calling Papa John's and playing video games tonight. Blah.

Re: :::jealous:::

LOL! You should definately get the SP, even if you have the "old" GBA. It's annoying that they made a much cooler one so soon (Microsoft, anyone?), but it IS worth it. I have the original milky pink GBA, bought from Japan before they were released here, and I thought it was cool at the time, but this one is SO much better. The back-lighting makes all the difference, and I love being able to just throw it into my purse without worrying about scratching up the screen.

Oh do NOT get me started on that bastard Mario... I bought Super Mario Advance when I got my first GBA, and I have yet to get past the first freakin screen!!! I sucked at the original too, but at least I could get somewhere and have FUN while I sucked, even if I couldn't beat it. Argh. :{

I have only four (soon to be six) Advance games, but a ton of regular GBC carts. I have the Dragon Warrior games, all of the Pokemons except for the two new ones, the original Super Mario, Zelda, Harvest Moon 1-2, Tetris, Monopoly... I have a couple of games that I haven't even tried yet. Some of them are great games, but they seem so tiny now on that "big" GBA screen, lol. Some of them (like Tetris) look okay stretched, but some of them look really weird.

The European Scrabble sounds fun; where did you get it?

The backlighting is completely cool (I hate the glare from external light sources), plus even though the screen is the same size as the original GBA, the backlighting makes it LOOK bigger. The flip-top part is great too, especially if you like to drag it around, or if you have kids or pets to knock it off of your desk/table. And it's so tiny and cute!!! I love this thing. =)

Well what the hell is wrong with me, eh?

Pictures of the house can be seen here: http://www.purplestardust.ziggabella.com/house - you can see the bannister, which is a nice example of the woodwork, and the etched glass door, and the bathtub in the turret (needs paint!), and the turret itself, plus some backyard shots, including the daffodil bed and my purple lilac. In the shot of the whole yard, there is a spot closest the house where the grass is dead (it looks like they used to have a shed and moved it) - that's where the koi pond goes. :)

Re:

Who puts in a bathtub in a room with that many windows? :)

I love the little details in the corner of the steps.

The whole place looks like it needs a little work but is SO beautiful underneath the dust! It's got such fabulous woodwork and windows and, yeah, I'm so envious!
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 4/14/2003 1:03:42 PM

The windows are frosted, and that little shelf is where the plants go... it's going to be like a little rainforest, and actually, your slider tub is what I'm using for inspiration. =D

The little brass thingies in the corners are to keep dust from collecting there. How cool is THAT?

The bathroom needs the most work... the other rooms are fine except I don't like the colours, so they're getting painted anyway. I also plan to have it professionally cleaned before we move in, because the walls need to be cleaned, and I don't want to tackle that. We're going to do all the painting ourselves, however. The woodwork is SO COOL, and except for in the kitchen, it's all original and unpainted. The floors could stand to be re-finished, but it isn't so urgent as getting rid of that awful paint colour and that tacky-ass wallpaper border. And it needs better lighting.

Structurally it's awesome. Rusty jumped up and down and hung from attic beams, and the place is solid. The roof is new, the electrc is new, and the furnace is new. All of the appliances except for the fridge are less than three years old.

I am so psyched.

Getting in on this late

Re: Getting in on this late

I *WILL* let you know, thanks! =)

This house was built in 1909, and it isn't in awful shape, but we WOULD like to restore it and be as historically accurate (at least in the lower rooms) as possible. The woodwork is original and unpainted in all the rooms except for the kitchen and bathroom, and those two rooms also have some unsuitable "improvements". They're not as bad as where I live now, that was clearly redone in the 1970's, but they're not Victorian-looking, either. Any tips or advice you have would be much appreciated!!!
From: [info]angel_renewed
Date: 4/14/2003 1:28:52 PM

Re: Getting in on this late

1909? Cool. Mine was most likely in worse shape than yours. There was no functional kitchen or bathroom AND holes in the exterior walls. So, take some of the below with that in mind. The things I think I most didn't realize up front:

* The cost of heating. My house was only 1,000 square feet and could easily run $300 a month. If your house isn't insulated, you can get insulation blown in. Definitely worth it.

* Salvage stores. Salvage stores are your friend. You can find a lot of authentic woodwork, fixtures, etc. there.

* Windows. Does it have new ones? If not, be prepared to fight any remodeler tooth and nail. They all want to 'update' your windows. That means either spending ludicrous cash on custom replacements or downsizing what are probably gorgeous existing windows.

* Interior - Do NOT listen to Martha Stewart and her minions. Victorians HATED consistency. They would do one room in dark, Oriental tones and the next room in light French floral country. This whole idea of having the interior 'flow' is new and, frankly, irritiating in a Victorian home. For that matter, stay the hell away from Bob Villa, too.

* Wiring. We fritzed the wiring the first winter. It was only 70 AMP. 70 AMP=BAD.

* Some books I used

Re: Getting in on this late

This is so freakin' awesome, thanks! =)

Re: the boring not-fun stuff - it DOES need insulation, definately. Our wiring, however, was updated in 2002, so that should be good. That was actually a huge selling point for me. The furnace and roof are also new.

The bathroom is a mess, but usable, same with the kitchen. They need aesthetic help, but are functioning. As you can see in the photos, the place needs to be painted, and those hideous wallpaper border yanked down. At some point, I would like to refinish the wood floors, but they aren't disgusting now.

The window trim outside needs to be painted. I *think* that the windows have already been replaced, as there were storm windows, and they looked new. I'm not sure whether to go with the practicality of keeping the new storm windows, or the prettiness of trying to find originals. Thoughts? I saw another Victorian home in town that had stained glass borders in the windows; I really liked that!

Will keep in mind that different decor styles are okay - that one will be a hard one for me. Just so nothing looks too modern, I think I'll be okay. We might actually go with an Asian-inspired bedroom; we saw a really pretty one on TS a few nights ago. My biggest decorating problem is, I'm a big chicken-shit. I fear change, I fear colour, I fear drama. I want to paint everything pale sage because I know that it's safe. I would never consider painting a room burgundy, for example, even though I see other people do it and know that it can work. I am a weenie.

Anyway, thanks for the tips; am off to shop Amazon now!

They assured me that it wasn't really as bad as it looked, but put him on Amoxicillin to be on the safe side. In case anyone wonders, forcing foul-tasting pink medicine into a very large, strong, and angry feline is NOT fun.

The Max Cat has always been my Problem Child. If there are fleas to be had, he will have them. If there are ear mites to be had, he will get them. If there is a cold to be had, he will catch it. He has already lost most of his teeth, sounds like Darth Vadar, and is allergic to plastic.

What a gorgeous kitty! I love purebreeds, but they DO require more care. [info]darthmordred got an eye scratch when he was young that required us to keep our 1 BR (with no real doors) apartment in the dark for 3 days. He also is VERY picky about water for some reason. Otherwise, he's actually less neurotic than Bob's tuxedo mutt cat.
From: [info]purple_stardust

Ooohhh, Mordred is so pretty (albeit quite sinister, I'm sure). Is he black smoke? I used to have a black smoke persion; he was the most beautiful cat ever... and much sweeter than Mr Cranky Pants, here. I think a lot of Max's problem is, he is PURE-bred, but not neccessarily WELL-bred. He was a gift from my ex, who bought him at a pet store... so I assume that he came from the equivelant of a puppy mill. :\

Re:

Yes, Sir Mordred is a black smoke. I had bought (and have papers) for a black persian only to have him end up a smoke. I figure I got the better end of it, as smokes are pricey. Mordred certainly can be a sweetheart, when he's not trying to take over the world.

That would be my first choice, too - they're so big and pretty, but without the respiratory issues that Persians can have. I would love to have a Ragdoll or a Maine Coone, though Rusty wants a Bengal, lol. At this point, I would settle for a cat that doesn't get every weird ailment that comes along. :\

Wow, Solo is five years old and while he IS allergic to plastic, he has never gotten ill. Well, once when he was younger he got an eye infection, and when I first brought him home he had worms. But that was all some time ago. The rats are the real source of vet bills. ;)

Plus the warm fuzzy feeling of knowing you saved something from certain death.

Happy Pesach, to those who observe.

I am not observing this year. My Judaism stuff is packed up already, my rabbi is out of commission, there isn't a chance in hell of me getting this apartment cleaned of hametz or anything else for that matter, and I have way too much other stuff going on right now.

I suck as a Jew.

Things didn't work out as planned this year so here goes yet ANOTHER holiday that I'm not observing. I've done a lot of passover-related reading the last week to try to make up for it a bit. Next year though I WILL be doing passover.

Yeah... according to the last newsletter, my rabbi is having a baby and leaving the synagogue - between that and the big move, everything is kinda in limbo. I am hoping that *one of these days* things will settle down and I can get back to it and convert already. I will see what I think of the new rabbi, but more than likely I will just start going to the synagogue in Frederick MD - they're more conservative, have formal classes, and have Saturday morning services (I don't like to go out on Friday night). First, I just want to get moved. ::: sigh :::

Is everything okay?
From: [info]grimkitten_
Date: 4/17/2003 7:21:27 PM

Yeah, everything is good. Things got kinda screwed up for me because Matt didn't sign up for his Hillel seder in time, so we couldn't go and his family is having like a gazillion guests over for their seder so it wouldn't be a really good time for me to do the whole 'meeting the parents for the first time' thing. Next year though, plus the high holy days this year will be observed. Matt and I already have plans to go to his parent's temple for services. That's a while from now though, I should already be in Ohio by then.

Sounds like this other synagogue is better! I loved going to the classes when I was converting. In fact, I may even go to even more once I settle in somewhere. I'm thinking about, one day, re-converting into conservative because I'm not terribly happy with the way I was converted.

There is a rat in my apartment! Not one of my usual rats, but a wild rattus rattus. I need to think of a good way to catch her - I wouldn't mind keeping her, but more than that, I don't want to leave her here and have the next tenants kill her. Hmmm...

Could you really keep her? Are wild rats carriers of mega germs? . ;P

It would be good if you could get her out of there though before someone kills her.
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 4/17/2003 6:08:19 PM

People HAVE kept wild rats (I know three people who have), but they found abandoned babies and raised them from birth... I doubt a full-grown one could ever been tamed. They don't carry a lot of germs, either - the biggest concern is that she would have mites, and give them to MY rats. Mites are species-specific, so no one else would get them, but the pet rats could. :\
From: [info]arkady
Date: 4/17/2003 7:20:09 PM

I doubt she's actually rattus rattus, as they are actually rare and an endangered species; more likely she's a wild rattus norvegicus. I wouldn't bother trying to keep her once you've caught her, as she's grown up wild and captivity would actually be cruel to her.
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 4/17/2003 7:30:51 PM

I don't think they're very rare here - in fact, I've known three people to keep them as pets (one is Muridae, who you've might have seen from my friends list, and another is Jane Adamo of the ratlist). They got them as tiny babies and raised them though, so you're probably right about not keeping her - I doubt that she'd ever be tamed.

Still, I want to catch-and-release her, as I am sure that my idiot landlord would put out snap traps, or glue.

I thought at first that she might be a *very* small Norvy, but according to this page: http://www.pestproducts.com/roof_rats.htm she sounds like the Alexandrine rattus. She definately has a grey belly.

I just hope she doesn't have babies somewhere... :(

Took "good faith estimate" to lender yesterday, picked up an addendum about closing costs (who pays what) from realtor, signed and returned that. I called the realtor today; she has faxed the addendum to seller's realtor to sign. She also told me that the lender saw a copy and thinks that she can order the appraisel based on that, and that things are "moving right along". I hope so! I really just want to get this over with, so that I can move into my pretty dollhouse and start painting. I want to take a bubble bath in my turret, dammit, I have no time for paperwork.

I saw Nikki (the wild rat) again today. Last night, she took a piece of dog food from my fingers! I ordered a live trap for her; I hope it comes soon. Rusty wants to catch her too, so that Asshole Landlord doesn't kill her. I kinda thought that he (Rusty) might freak out that there was a wild rat in the house, but he seemed fairly unflustered by the news. I'm starting to think that he's been with me too long. I'm fairly sure that normal people don't like wild rats in the house.

[Current Mood |thoughtful]
[Current Music |tv - tlc - while you were out]

Since we so rarely rent "new" movies, I thought I would make a note of the ones we watched:

The Grey Zone: Wow. This was by far the best of the ones we rented. I was really concerned with watching a Holocaust drama that starred David Arquette, but he didn't annoy me at all in this. It was a very thought-provoking drama, and actually inspired semi-deep theological discussions the next day. I think that the people who worked in the Sonderkommando groups could be excused, according to halacha, since they were basically doing it to save their own lives, at least for a while. Morally, however, I don't see how you could live with yourself if you did participate, especially if you knew, which it appeared that they did, that they would die in the end, anyway. Of course, the particular group in this movie was doing it with the intention of destroying the cremetoriums, so I would think that would make a difference. The good of many, and all that Spock-stuff. On the other hand, Spock didn't help to kill his own people. On the other other hand, it wasn't like the Jews wouldn't have been killed, if not for these people. At the end of the movie, there was a bit about this group being the twelfth of thirteen groups. I wish it would have said what happened to the thirteenth Sonderkommando, if any had lived. It would be interesting to hear their stories, to know how they had managed to live with themselves after committing such terrible acts. I know that I can't sit here, safe in my comfortable home with my well-stocked fridge, and even begin to speculate what it would have been like to be in that position, but I imagine that it would be very difficult to live with yourself, afterwards.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding: What can I say; we were the last people on the planet to see this movie, and it was as good as everyone said that it was. While comedies, romantic or otherwise, are not my favourite genre, it was an enjoyable film, and very funny.

Scotland PA: The DVD was damaged, so we didn't get to see it at all. Lynsey, I will re-rent another copy of it when I return these, and drool appropriately.

Insomnia: I heard that this movie was critically trashed, and I don't know why. It has Al Pacino and Robin Williams, so I thought it was a safe bet, and my hunch was correct. I didn't find it as creepy as promised, but Pacino is always a pleasure to watch, and it was an interesting character study, especially since I have always suspected that if I were a cop with a shaky case, I would do the same thing that Pacino did. On the other hand, there is a line, and that line can be fuzzy. And Pacino, even with a severe lack of sleep, is a babe.

Aww no Maura... she's so fickle! I like MBFGW far more than I expected too, I usually despise romantic comedies, I prefer my films to be a little more 'out there', but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I've spent the last couple of nights thinking about the Holocaust too actually. Over the weekend Channel 4 showed a brand new adaptation of Anne Frank's diary and it left me (as usual) in an absolute mess, they actually shot the after-story (for a change) in Westerbork, Auschwitz-Birkenau and Bergen-Belsen which added to the emotional turmoil really. I'm the sort of person who gets through life by telling myself that "everything is for a reason" but this is the one thing that I can never seem to get right with in my head. I can almost always get to the point where I tentatively 'forgive' the rank and file of the SS, they were doing a job in order to save their own lives, but I too wonder how on Earth anyone could live with that, how they could go home at night and sleep. I've seen so many documentaries, read so many books and have yet to see anyone admit shame, guilt, remorse. Maybe they just dissociated from it so totally because if they let the reality of what they did sink in then it would drive them insane? I think there are some things that are so beyond human understanding, that we'd love to know more about but just can't, and that it's all (somehow) fulfilling a greater purpose. The wretchedness has passed now, I seem to reach a stage beyond comprehension, totally wracked with grief and shock whenever I watch anything like this or read about it. I obviously didn't meet any of my grandfather's relatives or friends but the sense of loss after watching something like the Anne Frank dramatisation is so powerful and raw, it's a sense of disbelief and of wanting it not to be real. I suppose that's a good thing in a way because when something like this loses the power to shock and to horrify then I guess we're all in trouble.
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 4/23/2003 9:13:20 PM

Perhaps the people of the Sonderkommando could justify their survival if they lived to tell the story to future generations. But still, in the movie, it sounded like they KNEW that they would be ultimately killed, and I can't see going along with such atricities if you knew that you'd die anyway.

As for the Nazi soldiers, we can only assume that Hitler had them convinced that the Jews WERE bad. Rusty speculated that Hitler was able to convince them that because Germany was in turmoil, the Jews were to blame. That is ridiculous, of course - the whole world suffered the depression - but perhaps they had limited scope of world events, and it's always easier to blame someone else for your problems. People WANT to have a scapegoat.

Still, it's horrifying to think that people were so barbaric, so recently. :(

Have you seen the Anne Frank movie where Ben Kingsley plays her father?
From: [info]paraxeni
Date: 4/23/2003 9:49:38 PM

Yeah that was the one on here over the weekend with Ben Kingsley and Brenda Blethyn, have you seen it? It was good to see Anne portrayed with some sense of realism instead of as a whitewashed 2D character. It was extremely hard to watch but so necessary I think.

My thoughts too have been that people were so brainwashed into believing that the Jews really were to blame for the dire straits that Germany was in. I've seen some of the propaganda films and I really truly do believe that some people believed that they were in danger, that their children were in danger... playing right into Hitler's hands. I know that a lot of Germans still carry a weight of guilt for what happened, they're probably the least warlike nation in Europe (especially at the moment.. *ahem*) . I always try and think over what I'd do if I was faced with that sort of decision but it's so hard to even stretch my mind that far. You're right, people want, even need a scapegoat sometimes, I can see it happening on a smaller scale since Sept. 11th with Middle Eastern people being viewed with suspicion. It troubles me that here in the UK the people who need the most help, displaced from their countries and families are now being ghettoised and targeted by so-called 'nationalists' in a way that never fails to remind me of the treatment of Jews in Europe in the last century. Sad that people never seem to learn from the lessons of the past, isn't it? Still, as long as there are free-thinking tolerant types like us around then we can still live in hope and spread happiness through Simon and Garfunkel songs! I'll dig out my dad's copy of Wednesday Morning 3am and put on Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream and use my powers for good instead of evil ;)

Yeah that was the one on here over the weekend with Ben Kingsley and Brenda Blethyn, have you seen it?

Yes, that's the one! I have it on DVD. I SO love Ben Kingsley - I've seen him in three movies - as Otto Frank, as Oskar Schindler's bookeeper, and as the hookah-smoking caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland - how's that for diversity! I thought that the little girl (Hannah Taylor Gordon) who played Anne was really good, too. She was in another movie about that time period, called Jakob the Liar. Robin Williams plays Jakob; you might want to check it out.

And spreading hope and happiness though Simon & Garfunkel is ALWAYS a good bet... :)

Got my shiny new phone activated this morning. It has a panda on the screen, and it's so pretty and shiny. I have no idea how to set it up, and no one has the phone number, but it's really cute, and it matches my new Gameboy. Pretty little silver flippy toys...

Anyway. I went to the post office this morning, and picked up Annie Hall. I apparently forgot to cancel the Director's Selection for April, because they sent me Red Dragon, as well. It stars the ever-creepy Anthony Hopkins, and claims to be "a journey into the mind of Hannibal Lector" ... which sounds really cool, unless it sucks, as sequels (or prequels, in this case) often do.

I also got some CDs that I'd ordered, including Little Girls by Tori Amos, Mad Season and Yourself or Someone Like You from Matchbox Twenty, and a comedy CD from Woody Allen (includes the Moose bit!), so I'm a happy camper. For Sarah, I got a CD of lullabies, and Where the Sidewalk Ends - as recited, sung, and shouted by Shel Silverstein. I dearly loved that book when I was a kid, so I thought the CD would be fun for her to read along to.

I came home to find that Marlboro had sent me a nice Zippo lighter - which is odd, considering that I don't smoke Marlboros. But hey, it's a free Zippo to light my Camels with, so I'll take it.

There was also a Jewish Source catalog, and Rusty's bank statement, which we've been waiting for, so it was a good mail day, all around.

Okay, now I'm really nervous...

Yesterday, Rusty got a raise. This is good news, because it looks good on the loan application, and it will also be helpful with the higher monthly payment, if we get the house. That's cool.

Today, I got the shiny new phone hooked up, and I was pretty giddy about that. Then I got all sorts of really cool mail, and I thought that was really cool, and I even started to get paranoid that things were going a little TOO well. And then...

I'd ordered this doll on Ebay a while back, April 14th, to be exact. The seller had said that she would send me a UPS tracking number when it shipped. I waited, and it never came, and finally today, I emailed her about it, and asked if the doll had been shipped. She just emailed back and said that there had been a clerical error on their part, and so she was refunding my money and sending the doll for free - a $50 doll, at that, plus shipping.

Things are going entirely too well. Clearly, something horrible is about to happen.

Because I knew ya'll couldn't stand the suspense...

The realtor called today. They did the appraisel. There are some things that need to be fixed, which we knew. Apparently, the lender called her and left a message and asking if we had a preference in lawyers; she was going to go ahead and get one to start the title search and stuff. Betty feels that it wouldn't have come this far if we weren't going to be getting the loan, so she thinks that all is good on that front, and now it's just a matter of doing some minor repairs. Yay!

We're going over to look at it again tomorrow. Eep!

Happy happy, joy joy...

I went out to buy clothes to wear tomorrow (yeah, I do this when I'm too lazy to do laundry; consequently, I have a LOT of clothes). Anyway, I bought a cute pair of jeans without trying them on (because I never try stuff on). They're Liz Claiborne Petites, size 6. They fit.

I still want to lose another twenty pounds, but the diet is on hold until after we get moved. I haven't been taking the diet pills, I eat whatever I want, I went back to non-diet soda, and I stopped exercising since I have no floor space because of the packing efforts.

But still. Size 6. Hoo-wah.

From: [info]purple_stardust

I have. I actually think it sounds like a pretty cool diet plan, and I know people who've had success with it. Unfortunately, I have two problems with it for me - one, I rarely eat meat, which seems to be the staple of Atkins. The other issue is, you have to give up all sugar. Now, I have no problem with giving up sugar as in sweets (candy, cookies, etcetera). The problem *I* have is, no sugar = no coffee. And without coffee, I'm basically a vegetable... :)

Listen up: Exercize (Well, excercize AND proper diet. but if I had to pick just one it would be exercise) is the best way to lose weight. Muscle burns fat, even when you're not doing anything. With the proper exercise regimen, you will gain muscle mass. You will then be able to burn more fat faster. Diet helps too. So GET BACK ON THAT ABSLIDE, SOLDIER.

And we went to Lowe's and spent about $150 on spackle, tools, and primer. Holy crap. I had forgotten how expensive it is to actually fix shtuff. Still, we have everything that we need (barring any incidentals) to make it pass appraisal, so we should be good to go for now. The things that WE want to do will cost a lot more, but can be done at our leisure.

And I also need to set up voicemail; I hate to do that because I can't stand listening to my own voice. I always use the default message on voicemail for the landline, just so I don't have to record my own, but I guess I have no choice with this phone. And I also need to read the user guide, so that I know how to do these things.

Today is Yom HaShoah - Holocaust Remembrance Day. I wasn't sure what would be appropriate for me as far as prayer, so I made a donation to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, instead. I very much suck at praying for the dead, so instead I shall pray for the people who survived, that they find the peace that they deserve, and that people continue to remember and learn from their experiences, and that collectively, we never let such atrocities happen again.

"It is utterly impossible for me to build my life on a foundation of chaos, suffering, and death. I see the world being slowly transformed into a wilderness, I hear the approaching thunder that, one day, will destroy us too, I feel the suffering of millions.

And yet, when I look up at the sky, I somehow feel that everything will change for the better, that this cruelty too shall end, that peace and tranquility will return once more."

Could someone please hold up a dollar bill to a standard bank check, and tell me if they're the same size? Or just measure a dollar bill for me? Please?

* I went out to Lowe's last night and bought coloured duct tape - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, as well as basic black and standard silver. I made the wallet; it turned out pretty well, except I didn't make the inside pockets quite wide enough, so cards and stuff have to be inserted vertically instead of horizontally, like I had intended. I will try it again later.

* I also stopped at Sheetz and ran into an old friend [1]. He gave me his email address and told me to keep in touch, which of course I won't. He's an okay guy, but I don't want to be friends.

* And then the asshole landlord stopped by, wanting to know when we were going to be out. I told him that we were scheduled to close on May 15, and he didn't seem to have a problem with that. Not as if I care if he DOES have a problem. Evict me, motherfucker, see what it gets you.

* Became annoyed when several people kept posting back-and-forth one-liners on my rattery mailing list about their petstore litters. Asked them to stop and changed list to moderated.

* Still working on cigarette pack cellphone cases.

I do not like my father, so much so that he doesn't even have my current phone number, and won't be told where we're moving to. I really don't like him. This is not a revelation. What IS shocking, is how much I'm like him, sometimes. This is NOT a good thing!

This guy is the cheapest man on the planet. He makes his own wine. He rolls his own cigarettes. He makes good money (he's a computer programmer), but for years he hung on to a Ford Pinto that was entirely held together with foam filler and beer cans. He firmly believes that anything worth fixing, can be fixed with duct tape. I just fixed my busted leather chair with duct tape.

At least *I* used matching black duct tape. He would have used silver, because it's cheaper...

Duct tape is like the force. It has a light side, a dark side and it holds the universe together...

MY dad fixes things with hammers. =D Give it a good old whack, that'll fix it right up! (Not.)

That's why my mother does all home repairs. =P

Our fathers should start their own repair business. Your father could bust things up with a hammer, and my father could stick the pieces back together with duct tape! Nothing would ever really be repaired, but they would have a helluva good time. =D

Smashinating and breakifying... maybe we should introduce them. :D

I read about this website at the doctor's office this morning and couldn't wait to come back home and post it to you. LOL

OMG, did you see some of this stuff?!? See, this is where I draw the line. Duct tape wallets are cool, if you're a cheapass and make them yourself, but paying someone else $10 to make you a duct tape wallet, just defeats the whole purpose. Still, who knew there was such a market... =D

This is my fifth - and last, I swear - post about duct tape. But honestly, this is far too thrilling to not post about. I have found and ordered purple duct tape from Tapemonster.com. Yes, I am that pathetic; I am actually thrilled by purple duct tape. I need help.

I love the coloured electrical tape, too - it's fun to decorate notebooks and stuff. I know, what am I, like, 12 years old?

Re: Oooooers....

I knooow, isn't that freakin COOL??? If you go to tapemonster.com, they have the best price, but they don't have a photo of the purple, BUT, I found the same tape on another site - http://www.identi-tape.com/duct.html - and it IS a pretty shade of purple.

I know! Wouldn't leaky pipes look WAY cooler if they were wrapped with PURPLE duct tape???

When I worked in a lighting equipment warehouse, we had a million and one different colours of electrical & gaffer's tape, which we used to mark the shipping crates. I found a lot of it rather amusing... but purple and cammo duct tape takes the biscuit.
