Got the estimates from the carpenter dude last night... ouch. I mean, we'll figure out a way to come up with the money, but still. We could save a lot of money if we painted the exterior trim ourselves, but we don't own a ladder, and even if we did, neither of us should be trusted on it.

On a related note, I checked the IRS website to see when we'd be getting our federal refund... by May 20. You know, right after we need the money. Bah.

I downloaded a bunch of "codec" files today, and finally I can watch AVI and VCD files with audio, hooray! I spent the afternoon watching Ren and Stimpy (Space Madness!), and old Guns 'n' Roses videos; that was completely excellent. And I'm downloading Nirvana videos now. Heh.

I'm also trying to clean out my MP3 folder. Actually, I'm just trying to figure out what all's IN my MP3 folder, and label it correctly. Some of this stuff I recognise; others, not so much.

Laurie: I know that you're the one who recommended the Nick Cave; I have a lot of that. I also have a song with no artist listed, it's just called "Wonderful Life" - do you recognise that?

And does anyone know who the hell Vanessa Carlton is?

"Wonderful Life" is probably by Black. Do the lyrics go something like "No need to run and hide, it's a wonderful wonderful life"? If so, yes, it's Black, and if you like it, I've got more of his stuff. :)

I also have almost everything Nick Cave has ever done, so if you need more Nick, I can hook you up.

Vanessa Carlton is...some piano-playing chick, I think, who has had a few MTV hits recently.
From: [info]purple_stardust

I only listened to a small bit of Wonderful Life, will have to try again to see if I recognise those lyrics, thanks!. It was late and I was just trying to figure out where all this stuff came from.

Nick Cave is awesome; I have All the Pretty Little Horses, Do You Love Me, She Passed by my Window, and his cover of Helpless. Anything else in particular that you'd recommend?

I still don't recognise Vanessa Carlton; no idea why I have a song by her. I have some really weird stuff in this folder...
From: [info]paraxeni

If you look for a programme called 'G Spot' you can run it on files that won't play right and it'll tell you if there are any extra codecs you need. It's saved me from smashing my PC with a hammer at least a few times!

"Wonderful Life" is a Nick Cave track too. I know you downloaded that track from me on SoulSeek and I know it wasn't labelled with the artist name. Starts like this, right?

Come in, babe
Across these purple fields
The sun has sunk behind you
Across these purple fields
That idiot-boy in the corner
Is speaking deviated truths
Come on, admit it, babe
It’s a wonderful life
If you can find it
If you can find it
If you can find it
It’s a wonderful life that you bring
Ooh it’s a wonderful thing

Damn, now I gotta go find my copy of Nocturama and listen to it.

Isn't Vanessa Carlton one of those poppy teen singer thingies?
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 5/2/2003 10:20:47 AM

Ahhh, that sounds like the one! It was labelled like, 01. wonderful life.mp3, very cryptic.

Vanessa Carlton may well be a poppy teen singer; I don't remember ever hearing of her!

I have very weird shit in this folder, including one song by Shakira and two from Avril Lavigne. I also have Judy Collins doing Amazing Grace, Nevermore doing The Sounds of Silence, and Shatner/Nimoy doing the Bilbo Baggins song.
From: [info]muridae

From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 5/2/2003 10:39:46 AM

Oh hell yes! Do you know how hard it is to get your name in a song if your name is Renee? If your name is Amanda or Sarah, you got people singing about you left and right, but when your mother names you Renee, people only tell you to walk away. :\

What was the question? Oh yes, I would like to hear that.

Better still, he's doing it for beer. I Jeff. I ran out to the supermarket to buy mass quantities of beer for Jeff, and promptly ran into the realtor. How embarrassing.

We put in a new bathroom floor and covered it with linoleum (to be replaced with tile later), put two more layers of mud on the closet drywall, fixed a hole, and cut the wood for a handrail to go to the basement - I will finish that later. My feet hurt from running up and down those stairs.

Jeff is so sweet - he went out to Lowe's this morning and bought me a new broom - something about it being bad luck to bring an old broom into a new house. After the building was done, we had rubarb (sp?) pie that he had baked himself - my man Jeff is multi-talented! And then he went back to Pittsburgh, alas. I wish we could get him to stay with us for a few weeks, until we get this stuff done, but I seriously doubt that his wife would go for that...

I've been sitting here thinking, which is usually a big mistake. I'm just not sure that I want to spend the rest of my life with Rusty. He hasn't done anything horribly wrong; I'm basically just sick of him. I'm sick of seeing him naked, I'm sick of the football, I'm sick of the noises that he makes, I'm sick of the whining, I'm sick of the apathy. I'm bored with him, and I want out.

He lasted longer than the first two husbands; I got bored with them shortly after I had their children. This relationship has lasted a record-breaking eight and a half years.

I think that I may be afraid of committment. In the beginning, when we had no possessions in common save a cheap television set and a small pile of CDs, I was devoted to him. He could fit his stuff in a garbage bag and leave me while I was at the supermarket, and I knew it. Now we have a daughter together. We have a car together. We're buying a fucking house together. Now, we are legally and financially bound together. Now, I am trapped.

I'm thinking that I should go buy a bottle of vodka, and get obnoxiously drunk, because I know it would piss him off. Maybe he would call the whole house thing off. Maybe he would leave me. Maybe that would be best, because then it wouldn't be MY decision. Then I could could just sit here in my drunken passive-aggressive stupor and be miserably satisfied that I'm not tied down.

And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass of what was everything...

Being married is hard. Probably the hardest thing we as humans ever do. Harder even than raising children, because we are programmed to raise children, whereas the whole monogamy thing we aren't wired for :-/

Hope it gets better. I've been there. With my first husband, it was Bacardi 151 and Hole playing really loudly. If I took both in large quantities he would eventually 'go away'.

I am forever cursed,Rusty came in and read my entry.I could bore you with the details of the
ensuing breakup, but suffice it to say,it was the standard ugly "breakup" scene":thunderous hurling insults, maniacal cursing, shattering glass, etc.
Now here I sit a victim of my own twisted desires. Rusty had barely slammed the gate and stormed out of my life, when the folly of my cursed demented deed hit my broken heart like
a searing bolt of hellfire. He was gone! I'm alone. I am at once a villainous victor and an
emotional failure. I MISS HIM! GOD,HOW I MISS HIM! I miss the soothing reassurance,in
the stong rich baritone voice. I miss the sweet song of his laughter. I miss his emotional calm.
I miss the warm embrace of his glorious naked body. But above all I miss FOOTBALL!!!!!
WONDEROUS,AWE INSPIRING FOOTBALL!! I miss the incredible violent ballet of the
autumnal gladiator!! Rusty can be replaced but FOOTBALL will never be the same.

I'm feeling a bit better now about Rusty and the house. I guess I have to grow up sometime, and if that means buying a house, this one seems like a good choice. I suppose that Rusty is a good choice too, despite his annoying tendancies. Maybe we really do love each other. Who knows.

I'm feeling less hungover now, too, which is good. I had a quesadilla and two Aleve, and then a nap, and I think the headache is finally gone. I'm still a little woozy, but definately better.

I got the latest synagogue newsletter yesterday; Rabbi Garfunkel had her baby, another little girl. Soon after she returns from maternity leave, she is leaving the congregation. I don't know whether to check out her replacement, or just go directly to Beth Sholom in Frederick MD. I think they're a conservative shul, and they have Saturday morning services (I don't really like going out on Friday night), plus I think they offer real classes, so that might be better anyway.

I ordered some PartyLite stuff from my mom; she dropped that off yesterday. There's a really pretty crystal bud vase, a purple glass candleholder, and some pretty tealight candles.

Today I got a new pair of Chucks; I wear the lo blacks the most, and my old pair had blown out. And most exciting, my purple duct tape came from Tapemonster.com. Heh.

In 1998. I was running a 486 DX with Win3.1. I bought a 28k modem, but it needed Win95 to run. I bought Win95, but I could only get it on CDs, so I went out and bought a CD-ROM and put it in myself. It took a while, but eventually I got online, albeit very slowly.

2. What was your first communications program?

Netscape Communicator.

3. When did you first chat over the internet, and how?

I "met" a French guy named Bruno, and he talked me into downloading ICQ.

4. What chat type program(s) do you use now?

I use Trillian, which runs all of the major chat programs, but I usually use AIM.

5. Who was your first service provider?

6. Did you ever use AOL?

I have AOL now, though I only use it as an ISP, not the browser or email interface.

Sure, why not. They're more reliable than the other ISPs that I've tried.

8. Who is your current ISP?

AOL... soon to be Adelphia (cable) when we move.

You're male, but people often mistake you for the other option. You're unfeasibly thin and pretty and always have perfect hair, often surrounded by sparkles/sakura/roses. You almost certainly have a tragic backstory which involves one or more of your parents, and are liable to have a Tragic Destiny (TM). You were almost certainly invented by a female mangaka, are worshipped by a female audience, and your life is characterised by periods of extreme pain and angst. Sucks to be you.

Lunch - kosher franks and mozzerella sticks (note the irony). Coke.

Irony noted. :) I buy Hebrew National hot dogs just cuz they taste best. I don't keep kosher because ... well, the main reason is that I'm not Jewish. ;)
From: [info]purple_stardust

LOL! That's as good of a reason as any. Still, I tell everyone to buy the kosher franks now - they're WAY better than the others.

BTW, Ballpark also makes kosher franks now, which is cool, but they're not quite as good as the HN. Just in case you see them and wonder. :)

We are out of Ziploc baggies. This doesn't seem like a huge tragedy, until you consider the possible ramifications. For example, what if I was doing something crafty, and accidentily cut off my finger? You're supposed to pick up the finger and put it in a bag of ice to take to the hospital for re-attachment, but I couldn't very well do that with no Ziploc baggies, eh?

And there I'd be, wandering around the kitchen with my nine fingers, looking for a substitute for the Ziploc baggies that I should have bought months ago. I couldn't use a dish or a cup, because they're all dirty, and everyone knows you shouldn't stick your fingers into dirty cups. Meanwhile, the cats would have found the finger and chased it underneath the refridgerator.

I need to buy Ziploc baggies.

A tip for any possible future knife/finger interface scenarios - put the finger in a bag of it's own, and then put the finger bag in the ice bag. We don't want your finger getting frostbite do we?

From: [info]purple_stardust

No, circular saws scare me, because I could easily cut off a finger! However, I *do* want to buy a jig saw at some point. Jeff told me that it would be very difficult for me to cut off a finger with a jig saw, but still, I can't rule out the possibility. We had a long conversation about various power tools, and the likelihood of me losing body parts with each one.

Wow, and you got almost all of it done, too!

How much longer until the house is in move-in-able shape?
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 5/12/2003 11:30:46 AM

We're almost there - we need to repair a few more cracks (mostly corners and high spots - we just now found a ladder to borrow) and sand down the rest of the spackle (again, mostly high spots), and paint (primer) the bathroom and the spots where we spackled. We also need to have the exterior trim painted, but we're hiring a guy to do that.

Technically, it's livable NOW (more so than our current apartment!), but it still needs the above to pass appraisel.

If we can get the rest of the patching done during the week, then we can sand and primer this weekend, and *hopefully* close next week. :)
From: [info]muridae
Date: 5/12/2003 12:26:44 PM

Your house isn't considered liveable if it needs a paint job and some spackle?

<looks around at the house she's in>
<laughs maniacally>

No garage door (we've got plywood nailed up to the garage), the back shed is going to fall off the house one of these days, the cement driveway is cracked and broken, the plaster in the basement is literally detached from the wall and stays up only because the chicken wire backing onto which plaster goes hasn't fallen yet, the wood floor in the living room is splintered in several places, the dining room, kitchen, bathroom, and hallway are in SEVERE need of paint, the pipes leak, the front porch needs repairs, the water and pipe system in the basement bathroom is all fucked up, the kitchen floor is missing tiles, and there's no tile backsplash behind the sink or the stove.

Am I living in an uninhabitable hovel, or are your housing laws just extremely strict?

(You know what's really funny, besides that? This house is in better shape than it's been for years, because in the past five years, they did several important repairs, like put in new windows and put a door in the basement. Yet Sean's mom claims she now wants to move because other people who don't keep their houses up are moving into the neighborhood. I'm telling you, it was VERY hard for me and Sean to contain our laughter.)

Anyway! Incredibly long and rambly stories aside, it's great that you're so close to finished, and will be able to move soon!

Am I living in an uninhabitable hovel, or are your housing laws just extremely strict?

Maybe both? Because of Rusty's lack of credit, we're getting an FHA loan, so there are stricter standards for that. Some of them are really stupid, too, like all the bedrooms had to have closets installed - even the one that is going to be the rat room! It's not like the rats have a lot of clothes to hang up, but they have a closet, all the same...

From: [info]purple_stardust

Rusty came home with pretty Mother's Day flowers for me - pink roses and carnations in a clear pink and green Venetian glass vase. He's so sweet sometimes. He also bought three other vases. One is small and frosted purple, one is a ruffled with painted flowers, and the third is a white porcelin vase with a Victorian-ish rose design. The ruffled one and the one with the rose design both look "vintage", and will look exceptionally nice in the house, I think. Very pretty.

And we went to Lowe's, where I bought list stuff, as well a staple/brad gun and my very own drywall pan and knife. Drywalling appeals to my anal-retentive nature.

I finally got the laundry done yesterday. Clean pants, yay. I the laundry fairies.

Converse made a pair of "clog" sneakers for a while. They looked just like the regular Chuck Taylors, except they were backless, so you could just stick your feet in and go. I made my own pair using the blown-out Chucks that I just replaced. They're pretty shabby, but I figure I'm not going to be wearing them out in public anyway; I'm not that much of a dork. I want to reinforce them with duct tape, though. Okay, so maybe I am that much of a dork.

The realtor called this morning, wanted to touch base and see how the work was coming along. She seemed impressed with how much we'd done so far, and asked if we could be finished this weekend. We're definately going to try to close next week. Eeep.

Certainly! There's BEAUTIFUL woodwork in this house, and it's all original except in the kitchen and bathroom (where someone painted it white), and a built-in China cabinet, and a turret. I love the turret; the bathtub is in there. It's also got a really nice yard. We're very proud of our "find". Actually, it was MY find - the realtor sent us a huge stack of homes based on what we wanted and what we wanted to spend, I flipped though, saw that one, and knew it was The One. We looked at two others that day (mostly to humour the realtor), but when we saw that one, we said we'd take it, and offered full price. I love this house. :)

* Then we went out for dinner at El Ranchero, as the daughter was pleading for quesadillas. She was actually scooping her chips into the hot sauce, the little loon. This is what happens when pregnant women eat nothing but Mexican food for nine months.

* On a related note, there was a couple in the resturant with a tiny baby girl, and we briefly discussed the possibility of having another baby, ourselves. Hmmm.

Trying to find someone to sell us homeowners insurance. The agent that my uncle recommended, no longer carries it, and I can't seem to get anyone else on the phone. I would really like to get this taken care of tomorrow; Rusty is taking off work tomorrow, and also, time is running out.

I decided not to have the pentecostal preacher to paint the trim. Someone told me that he's not that good, plus the thought just weirds me out too much. So I have painter #2 lined up; I hope he's quick! I need to speak with him this evening and see what he needs and when he can start.

I also found a woman who will buff the floors, and someone else to clean the walls. Need to set up times with them, preferably after the initial work is finished, but before we start moving our stuff in. Speaking of which, I still need to pack... yuck. I hate moving this chaos.

Update: I finally got hold of a helpful lady at Nationwide; she even gave me quotes over the phone! Rusty will be talking to her tomorrow, and she will inspect the house early next week.

And I still need to start packing. Blah.

My son was supposed to go to the Holocaust Museum on a school field trip. Unfortunately, there was a wreck, and the bus tipped over on its side. Steven is okay (his grandmother brought him by so that I could see for myself), but needless to say, it was a scary experience for everyone!

Rod, the studly Painter #2, started painting the exterior today. Rod is a great guy. He's cute as can be, and very sweet, and he has a great sense of humour. We spent most of the day talking - childhoods, religion, the legal system... unfortunately, we got very little actual painting done. I would love to have Rod as a boyfriend. As a painter, not so much. That aside, he can't reach the turret and four of the upstairs windows with the ladder we borrowed, so I don't know what the hell to do. I can't afford to hire a "real" painter, and we're quickly running out of time.

I finished sanding the master bedroom and the rat room, and got another coat in the bathroom, and Rod painted the porch and big front window, but that was about it.

I primered the master bedroom and the rat room, and spackled in Sarah's bedroom. Blech.

Rod finished painting the window trim on first floor, but I still need to find a painter for the turret, the upper windows, and the front eaves. I called Painter #1 and left a message; I hope he calls back soon. The problem is, even if I get someone immediately, it's supposed to rain the rest of the week, and we're scheduled to close on Friday. I'm starting to get really nervous.

We also got papers (sort of) served from Idiot Landlord. Whatever.

No, they're actual court papers. but he had a neighbour "serve" them, and she gave them to me and didn't get a signature saying that we'd recieved them.

So, umm, what papers?

Candi, seriously, set up a wedding fund account through Paypal, like you did with the children's art project. Everyone been there - we were so poor for my first wedding, I got married wearing a regular dress that I bought at a consignment shop! The marraige didn't work out, but if it had, I would hate to look back at the photos of me wearing this badly-fitting pink dress. If you find the perfect dress, you should by all means do anything in your power to get it... skimp on the flowers, the bridal party, the dinner, the reception, whatever - but get a dress that you really love. And believe me, after that ugly pink dress fiasco, I would be happy to contribute!!!

Another thing I did to save money (and was actually pretty cool), was I made my own bouquet out of silk (but good quality!) flowers. Not only was it way cheaper than what I would have spent on a florist, but it would have made a really nice keepsake. You can also find talented friends to do such things as provide music, take photos, bake the wedding cake.

Seriously, all anyone remembers about a wedding, is the bride's dress. Nobody looks back and thinks that the cake was dry or the organ was out of tune... hell, the groom could be wearing scuba flippers and I doubt that anyone would notice! Focus your money on the dress.

And again, mazel tov... you will make a beautiful bride!!! :)

I sent a pic to mom and she's in love now too, so hopefully it'll all come together in the end..

I'm taking a break from the house. I went over for a little while this morning and did a few things, but I really just need a break. I called the realtor and then the lender. We're not going to get a break from the rain in time to do the exterior painting, so they're going to have to reschedule closing. In one way it's good, because we get a bit more time to make sure that the interior stuff is all done, but also, that's more time to have to deal with Idiot Landlord. Bah.

So anyway, I put my head down on my desk and took a bit of a nap this afternoon; that was nice. I could do with a longer nap, but I have to go pick Rusty up soon and go pay for and pick up our homeowners insurance policy. I would really rather sleep.

We took care of the homeowners insurance, hooray!

I got a call from Painter #3, a guy named Chris who claims to have been painting for 25 years. He says that he has the equipment to handle both the turret and the windows over the porches, and he'll meet me at the house tomorrow to give me an estimate.

Can someone do an anti-rain dance for me?

Closing was rescheduled for next Thursday. The inside work passed appraisel, so it's just a matter of getting the exterior painting done, or given this never-ending rain, getting estimates from two painters so that it can go into escrow, instead. Argh. I just want my house, dammit.

I had new tires put on the POS-car. This was really an impressive thing for me, because I suck at car maintenance... I like to buy cheap cars, run them into the ground, and replace them. But the steel was actually coming through the tires, and Rusty didn't want me to drive to the bank, and so I decided it was easier to just get it over with. So now I have new front tires. It sucks though, because in a few weeks, I'm going to be replacing this car. Oh well.

And then I met with Painter #3, who is very slow and somewhat annoying. Still, he seems pretty motivated, so he may be our guy. IF it ever stops raining for long enough...

I have probably actually been in the room for more of them, but I have trouble paying attention and remembering movies. Like, I'm pretty sure I've seen Godfather II and that Clint Eastwood movie, but I don't remember. Other titles, like Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, and Star Wars, I am certain that I was present, but I couldn't pay attention to them, and don't remember what they were about.

Well, if you're ever up this way, you can get one too! The biggest ones are only 5-6 inches tall. This one is about two inches tall; I had to rescue it from the painters. I don't really know HOW to bonsai, but I have a couple of the little shallow pots, and there's always the internet. :)

Ginkgos are tremendously cool, too. I have seen them around here; I will keep my eye out, and if I see them again, maybe I can snag us some seeds or something.

I have no idea how to bonsai either. I also tend to murder plants, as cool at they are. I can't even keep aquarium plants (but that's because the Monster Moors tend to eat them within 10 minutes of their introduction to the tank.) I swear, those fish have started scaring people. We also looked at a few furniture places (holy shit, that stuff is expensive!) and looked for a new home theater system. We're having trouble finding the one we want.

And then we came back to find Painter #3 having troubles - he can't reach the attic windows and trim with the ladders we have, and I don't know if any of the rental places will be open tomorrow or Monday (Memorial Day). I could go back to Painter #1, but I don't know if we'll have any rain-free days by the time he can start (Monday), and there's still the issue of ladder rental. It would cost almost $400 to buy a 40' ladder, and then where the hell do we put it to store it after the painting is done? Argh! I don't know what to do.

We're now the owners of a Panasonic DVD home theater system. I'd wanted one that had a VCR in it, but those models didn't sound nearly as good, so we got this one. I am not an audio junkie, but Rusty wants to be able to play CDs in it too, hence the focus on sound quality. Whatever.

Then we went to Michaels and AC Moore, hooray! I bought memory wire, lots of pretty purple (glass and amethyst) beads, needle-nose pliers, purple jelly bracelets, purple candles, and some blank wooden blocks to paint and decorate for Sarah, plus paper, stickers, and paint for the blocks. And more Mod Podge. And a new 3/4" hole punch for making marble magnets. And some clear glass plates to decorate for candle bases. I love craft stores.

We put another coat of paint on the front porch, and on the first floor windows. I suddenly noticed that there were basement windows that hadn't been touched, and so I painted those too. And I cleaned up all the paint chips that had missed the drop cloths. That was a pain in the ass.

And I hung out of the third floor windows and painted what I could on the attic dormers. This was quite an interesting experience, since I am terrified of heights and get vertigo from standing on a step stool. Still, most of it is painted... I hope that it's enough to pass inspection.

I am so tired. My feet hurt and I'm sick of paint.

I feel a little better now... there was one attic window that didn't get completely painted, and the window wouldn't open. However, I went over and finally managed to open it, and hang out enough to touch up that last little part. It doesn't look great, but it looks like it's been painted.

I didn't hear back from the lender, so hopefully the inspector wasn't there today, before I was. I will still happily accept any prayers/good vibes/Renee-gets-her-house dances...

The lender hasn't called about the inspection yet. I wonder if that's a good sign, or bad? I wonder if the guy has even been there yet? I wonder if there's something I could take that would induce a non-fatal coma until all of this house-buying business is over...?

I really need to pack. Ugh.

We got court papers from John, wanting to evict us (!) for not paying May rent. We won't be in court, but we did manage to drop off an answer packet with a statement and some delightfully incriminating photos of the apartment. The funny thing is, I'd have been out this weekend if he had left us alone, but now the court is probably going to give me even more time to vacate.

I regret that I am unable to personally appear in court to address this matter, but I am scheduled today to close on the house into which my family will be moving as soon as possible. I attempted to have the closing appointment rescheduled to another day, but was unable to do so. As a result, I respectfully submit the following statement and exhibits to the court.

Myself, my fiancee Renee Ludwig, and our infant daughter Sarah inhabit the apartment in question. While the apartment is listed in my name, the rent checks have always been paid by Renee. On May 8, 2003, Renee sent Mr. DiCarlo a check for $450 (see item A). When we learned via email that he did not receive the check, Renee offered to have her bank stop payment on the check and provide a new one (see item B). We never received a reply to this email, and Mr. DiCarlo has refused to honor our efforts to make payment. It should also be noted that we paid Mr. DiCarlo the first and last month's rent when we moved into the apartment (see item C) in September 1997. Additionally, Mr. DiCarlo has stated that we have always paid the rent on time throughout our tenure as his tenants (see item D). As a result, we are quite surprised by this sudden action on his part. We were further dismayed to receive the unsigned Petition For Summary Relief: Wrongful Occupation of Residential Rental Property, not from an official server or Mr. DiCarlo himself, but from a woman unknown to us who we believe may be a tenant in another of Mr. DiCarlo's properties.

Furthermore, the apartment in question is uninhabitable, as witnessed by Mr. William Riley (304-264-2131) during his Rental Housing Inspection of March 20, 2003. Mr. DiCarlo has allowed the property to fall into extreme disrepair, refusing to address any problems reported to him, even those involving danger to the inhabitants of the building. Among other problems, the stove catches on fire if plugged in, the door is shaky with wide gaps and faulty hardware, there are several electrical outlets that do not work and others that blow a fuse if you use two things at once, the living room ceiling is sagging badly, the ceiling in the hall is crumbling with paint chips and plaster because of a leak that went unattended from the upstairs apartment, there is a hole and evidence of a burn in the kitchen ceiling, and an even larger hole in the bathroom shower stall where snakes, bugs, and other vermin can easily enter. I have enclosed photos of the apartment for your consideration.

We have no problem with leaving this apartment, as we feel that is unsafe for us and our two-year-old daughter.

Respectfully,

Russell B. Snyder

The man should not have underestimated me or my vengeful nature. Bwahahahaha.

So we went to closing, signed papers, got the key, etcetera. We talked to Betty (the realtor) for a few minutes afterwards. She has been so nice through all of this; I want to send her flowers or a plant or something. As stressful as it was, she was always very helpful and patient.

Thanks also to you guys for the congratulations and good wishes! We're positively giddy. :)

Anyway, after closing, we went back to Target for a third shower curtain liner (two wasn't enough). I also got some stuff for the remarkabley well-behaved daughter: crayons, animal colouring books, and a new pair of sneakers. We went to Michaels, where I got more purple beads, as well as three more blank wooden blocks, better brushes, and more stickers.

Then we came back to town and met up with my mom, who kindly took us out to El Ranchero to celebrate with yummy Mexican food and sangria. It's been a very lovely day.

I guess I really should pack now.

I called Adelphia and made arrangements for them to disconnect here (Monday) and hook up cable at the new house; they'll have to run the cable into the house, so they couldn't fit me in until next Wednesday - which means we'll actually be forced to live for a couple of days without television. The horror. I also told them I wanted cable modem hooked up. Heh.

I called U-Haul to reserve a truck; I'm on stand-by for tomorrow. I really hope I can get one - no way will this big-ass desk fit in that Taurus. Neither will the rat cages, for that matter.

And I took two loads of boxes over: VHS and DVDs, CDs, Judaism books and paraphenalia, games and jigsaw puzzles, vases, antiques, Alice in Wonderland stuff, my marble collection.

I still have almost everything else to pack. I need to go through the shed and figure out what I want to bother taking. I need to buy new surge protectors for the computer and entertainment stuff. I need to clean the drywall dust out of the rat room so that I can get them moved in.

I know it will be worth it in the end, but I hate moving.

I haven't the words to express how much I hate moving. Really, at one point we had a huge fight which ended with me calling my mother and Rusty throwing down the keys to the U-Haul and the new house and storming out. It was not a pretty scene. Fortunately my ex-husband showed up soon after to help, and we try to avoid displaying our utter contempt for one another in public.

Anyway. We finally started to accomplish something at that point. Today was the day we had the U-Haul (and Jamie!), so we focused on the big and heavy stuff today. We got the aquarium and stand moved, as well as poor Simon and Fillet (the catfish), who are living in a bucket for the time being. We moved the crappy bookcases and most of the books, Sarah's dresser, a wooden file cabinet, and a few other miscellaneous pieces of decent furniture.

We also moved the rats and their cages, and some of their paraphenalia. I thought they'd be freaked out, but they seemed to enjoy being outside, and didn't even hide after the ride over.

I decided to leave my desk. It's a great desk, but it's huge and heavy and would be extremely difficult to get out of here in one piece. I'm leaving the entertainment center here too, and our bed. The entertainment center and bed are crap, but I'll really miss this desk.

Small not-yet-packed stuff tomorrow. I hate moving.
