I got the last of the stuff out of the apartment, or at least the last of what I wanted to take.

It's weird how detached I feel from it now. I thought I would be sad to leave, or at least a bit meloncholy; we've been there for almost six years. My daughter was concieved there. And yet, walking around today, it was more like visiting a stranger's home. A lot of our stuff is still there; our bed, the sofa, my desk, a lot of miscellaneous stuff - but it all feels different now. Maybe it's the fiasco with the asshole landlord, maybe it's because I already got all the stuff of sentimental value, but whatever made that place home is definately gone. I have a new home now.

Anyway. I got some of my pots and pans, in case I decide that I want to cook now. I picked up the betta fish and the blue Michigan rat. I rummaged through the stuff in/on/around my desk; grabbed most of my software, some cards from Rusty, and my old journals and writings. I went through the bedrooms, made sure that everything important was accounted for. I'm done.

My mom stopped by, brought me an antique flowered pitcher that my grandmother had been given as a little girl. It's lovely, and it makes me very paranoid, as I'm not sure that I should be trusted with the family heirlooms. She also sent me some antique linens, hand-laced, even. Nice.

And Steven finally made it to the Holocaust Museum today (the last time they tried to go, they had an accident). He bought me a pin that says "Remember" in Hebrew, that was very sweet.

Tomorrow I start cleaning and unpacking...

And yes, I did leave "gifts" for my asshole landlord to remember me by. The apartment is now an aromatic combination of saurkraut, cheap canned catfood, broken eggs, and dirty fish water. In a few days, he's going to know what "smells bad" really smells like.

I also finished filling the aquarium; Simon seems much happier with the arrangement. I got the filter cleaned and set up, but I think I'll just buy new air wands, rather than try to salvage the old ones. When I go to Petsmart for air wands, I might look about getting a couple of comets.

This evening, we've been listening to music and painting blocks; very nice.

Tomorrow I need to make a list of the things that I need to replace, that I forgot (like the can opener) or left at the apartment on purpose (like my dishes).

I woke up with nasty carpal tunnel symptoms, it was an hour or so before I returned to normal. It seems to get me worse at night than when I'm actually typing (or mousing), and my current lack of a proper desk hasn't helped any. Must remember to wear silly gloves to bed tonight.

The cable guy showed up and hooked up my regular cable AND a second line for cable modem. I can tell already that dial-up will never again be adequate. I had to call tech support because of a software issue, and the guy that I talked to was very helpful and nice. Tres cool.

Whilst I was in high-speed heaven, Rusty was upstairs in homeowner hell, fixing our leaky tub faucet. We'd had the same problem (a worn seat) at the apartment, so he knew how to fix it.

I went to CVS for more cleaning stuff, and found someone's Lowe's charge card on the floor. I returned it, despite the plumbing issues and the gazillions of dollars worth of paint I need. :P

I have been worthless today, fell asleep twice, and just generally lazed around most of the day. I'm going to blame it on PMS, I think.

My mom is driving me nuts. She's always complaining about something: her health, she has no money, something. She is like the stereotypical Jewish mother, except, she's not Jewish. So today I called her on the phone, and we ended up talking about vitamins, and how she needs them. Fine. But all of the sudden, the talk turns to MY diet, and how much it sucks...

She says she's surprised that I don't have some awful bad-nutrition disease, like rickets, or berri berri. I tell her that I do NOT have rickets, or berri berri. She informs me that I don't know what the symptoms of rickets or berri berri are, and therefore, I might have them.

Then she asks me when was the last time that I ate a vegetable? A fruit? A meat? I tell her I don't know, I didn't know there was gonna be a quiz. I swear the woman is insane.

Sheesh, it's annoying when people do that. But she's your mom -- she's probably worried about you! Your diet is, admittedly, cheese-o-centric. :)

Anyway, rickets is caused by a shortage of vitamin D, or of natural sunlight, and vitamin D is supplemented in dairy products, so it's unlikely you'd have that. You'd know if you had beri beri because the symptoms include muscle weakness and paralysis. =P

It's not a bad idea to take a multi-vitamin every day! I try to remember to take one -- in fact, your post reminded me to take it. Thanks. :D

I went to the post office and the bank, gave them the new address at the bank.

Stopped at Target, where I spent a lot of money on stuff that I forgot or didn't bother to pack: a can opener, a measuring cup, a dish drainer, kitchen knives, bowls for the rat treats. I got another set of shower curtain rings, and a silver-coloured wastebasket for the bathroom. I also bought a potty chair and training pants, Hello Kitty bubble bath, a purple Hello Kitty bag, and a new outfit for Sarah. And I got a box of L'oreal "Chunking" Highlights for me.

Then it was on to Petsmart, where I bought the usual pet food, as well as new bubble wands for the aquarium, blue air line tubing, anacharis plants, and two cute little comet goldfish. I also got a pretty purple fluffy kitty bed for Mazel. It says "Princess" which is certainly appropriate.

I stopped at Kmart on the way home and bought a set of kitchen utensils (I needed a spaghetti spoon), salt and pepper shakers, bones for the dogs, and purple hair paint.

And now, I would very much like to take a nap.

recommented to correct link

It seems to have two branches.

One is the standard eBay "buy the horrible haunted thing I found!" craze. (Guy digs up jar, is now haunted by horrible thing, can't get rid of jar or thing and is trying to sell it.)

The other seems to be a 'psychic hotline' deal. You can buy your very own "ghost in a jar" that will... well, it's not very clear. "Bring you good luck" seems to be theme.

Why people have decided to snap up the ghostinajar domain names to peddle to the cons selling the GiaJs is beyond me. Although I appreciate the thought behind scamming a scammer, I'm not sure it's going to work.

Update: I went ahead and called a plumber, who basically charged me $75 to tell me that I shouldn't flush tampons down the commode. Never mind that I've been flushing tampons for eighteen years with no problems; now suddenly flushing tampons is a terrible thing to do.

He's supposed to come back Monday with an electric auger and charge me more money.

[info]jacquez or anyone who has experience - when a gas range/oven has been sitting unused for a while, would there be a master switch to turn it "on" or something? I tried turning the burner knobs on a while back, and nothing happened, and now I see that there's a big blue knob on the gasline itself, so I'm wondering if someone turned it "off" while the house was sitting empty. Anyone know? I am terrified of gas stoves, so I don't want to touch anything that I shouldn't...

It's usually fairly normal for the gas supplies to be turned off if a property is likely to remain empty for some time. Even if the gas company have reconnected you, you'll still have to switch on the supply to the cooker via the gas stopcock - the big blue knob on the gasline. There should only be one direction you can turn it in; work out which way it moves, then turn it until it's fully open and won't turn any more. Next, open up all windows in the kitchen to ensure good ventilation. Then make sure it's all working by lighting all the pilot lights on the cooker - all hobs as well as oven and grill - and make sure they all burn well for a good five minutes to burn out any impurities and that nothing is clogged. After that it should be fine, and you can close the windows again.

Thanks Rose!!! I've never had a gas stove before (I've only even *seen* one once), so I was completely baffled. They scare the hell out of me; one, because I've got no sense of smell so I would be unaware of any gas leaks, and two, because I just don't like the idea of anything that has blue flames shooting out of it... but I'm going to have to cook sometime. Thanks again!

Re:

Okay. I know where you're coming from. I frikkin HATE gas, too. Normally, on a gas range the top of the stove will lift off and there will be at least 1 (sometimes 2) pilot lights. These pilot lights are necessary to get the damn thing working. There's also a pilot light in the oven.

Here's how *I* would approach it. This is assuming your stove isn't a new-fangled one.

1. Turn the gas on

2. OPEN THE WINDOWS. You've probably got some built up gas. No go boom. Boom bad.

3. Lift up the stove top and look for a place the lines could be coming out to make a pilot light. Usually between burners. There may be a nozzle there to turn the pilot light on/off. If it's a self lighting new-fangled kind, it could have an 'auto-start' button.

4. Arm yourself with an aim and flame type lighter. THIS IS IMPORTANT. Don't use matches or small lighters.

5. Take the aim and flame. Light it. Carefully use it to 'roam' around the top of the stove where the pilot light could be. At some point, if there is a pilot light, it will 'catch' and a small fire will result. Test this by turning on the burners. If the pilot light is lit, they should turn on.

Anyway, you most definitely need to get those pilot lights lit. Worst case scenario, have a handyman come out and help. For far less than buying an Electric stove and dropping an outlet for said stove, they can show you what to do.

Rusty and I took Sarah for a walk last evening, and I found a four-leaf clover.

We happen to live near the local high school, and yesterday they sponsored some sort of breast cancer relay thing. This is not particularly interesting in and of itself, but afterwards, they put on probably the most spectacular fireworks display that I've ever seen [1]. We had a great view from our front porch, and will have to pay attention to see if they do it again next year. It was way cooler than the July 4 fireworks display that they do at the park.

[1] I personally don't believe that raising money for cancer research is very helpful, because currently it doesn't behoove the researchers to find a cure. If people wanted to stop this shit, they should find a way to give the diseases to the researchers, making them much more motivated to find a cure. But if you do believe that it can make a difference, then it certainly doesn't seem practical to spend thousands of dollars of the money you've raised, on an elaborate pyrotechnics display. But whatever. Neat fireworks, anyway.

Yes, I am obsessing. But it freaks me out, dammit.

So Rusty came home yesterday, and I showed him the instructions, and he lit the pilot lights. There are three of them, two in the range and one in the oven part. For anyone not familier with gas ranges (as I was not), they're actually small flames, that stay lit, all the time. I was alarmed, and he told me that there's one in the water heater, too. Does no one else find that disturbing? There is something constantly on fire in the house, whether we're here or not.

In 1994, my home burnt to the ground - killed my three cats and destroyed everything that I owned... so maybe I am more paranoid than other people. But still.

As soon as I have the money for the conversion and the new appliances, that sucker (and the gas water heater) are out of here, and I'm having them cap the lines as far away as possible.

Assuming we don't all blow up, first. :\

Wow, I don't blame you. I'm not very fond of gas appliances either. But you're stuck with them for a while, so just think about how many people there are who have these things all the time for years and decades and they don't blow up or catch fire. As long as the appliances and the gas lines are in good shape, they won't catch fire. Perhaps it would give you a little more peace of mind to have them inspected by the gas company.

From: [info]cellio
Date: 6/10/2003 3:28:11 PM

Wow, sorry to hear about the fire.

On the other hand, lots of people safely use gas, and I wouldn't be surprised if electrical fires are more likely than gas fires. Also, what kind of heat do you have? I'd bet there's a pilot light on your furnace, and furnaces are expensive to replace.

You might want to have annual inspections by a professional to make sure everything's in good shape. That and the good track record should help ease your nerves.
From: [info]gypsydance
Date: 6/10/2003 11:07:39 PM

From everything I've heard, you're right... electrical fires are considerably more common than gas fires. Soooo many things can go wrong with wiring, including bare wires, corrosion, water leaks (there's something to think about - water on an electric appliance means electrocution or fire, water on a gas appliance means you have to light the pilot light again), shorts, crossed wires... the list goes on and on. Once you get used to having a gas stove, it's much easier to cook on than an electric range, too. They're also easier to keep clean.

Also worth noting... while I've had occasional problems with gas stoves just plain not working, my current ELECTRIC stove shoots sparks out whenever I turn on a burner. I also have a couple of outlets in my apartment that do the same thing, as well as crossed wires on my kitchen lights. I live in constant fear of a fire, too, but definitely not from gas. I'm always worried that one day, the faulty wiring in this place is going to cause the entire thing to go up in flames.

From: [info]muridae

It's not really that scary -- yes, the flames are always on, but it's not as though it's a flame under a christmas tree or a bed or something -- hot water heaters and gas stoves are made to be very safe, and quite rarely blow up. As long as you're not storing stacks of oily newspapers next to the water heater, you're likely to be fine. I'm pretty paranoid about fires too, because my mom and dad had a big fire when I was a little baby, and ever since then they have been completely paranoid about candles, matches, any kinds of fire... and they passed the paranoia down to me. I think many many more fires are caused by poor or worn wiring in the walls, though, than by gas explosions.

Nevertheless, it's your house, and so if you want to replace the gas stove with electric, you should do it JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN. :D

Although this page is very sensational, you might find the gas detector useful.

I had a friend in high school who also couldn't smell things. Come to think of it... I think she may have hated bananas as well. Hmm.

Don't ya'll wish I'd just stick my head in it and shut up already? =D

Anyway, thanks for the words of encouragement... I used the range last night. It freaked me out, and it was much different than I remember electric ranges being (I haven't used any stove for about five years). I made pasta, which I boiled over several times. Oddly, I can make perfect pasta in the microwave, but it took twenty minutes to make barely-soft pasta with a real stove. I think part of the problem is my cookware - I have the Corning Visions, which I love, but it's kind of unpredictable sometimes. I guess I should get some new pots and pans...

After Rusty went to bed, I went out and bought groceries - including things that I'll actually have to cook. I bought a huge box of eggs so that I can make matzo balls. I also want to make some deviled eggs, which I actually make very well, thankyouverymuch.

And at some point, I desparately need to buy new bakeware - I didn't bring mine from the apartment. Of course, that was Corning Visions too, which I don't think they make any more. Martha has a set of glass bakeware, so maybe I'll try that.

Wow, at this rate, I might even buy a real cookbook...

I really like Calphalon cookware, and I'm very fond of Lodge cast-iron cookware as well. (Something like 90% of my cooking is done in 1 Calphalon nonstick saucepan and 1 big cast-iron skillet.)

Amazon has stunningly good prices on Calphalon, too, which is good because it's pricy stuff.

Also, gas stove advice - check the flame heights instead of relying on the dials. Sometimes even on "medium" the flame will still be high, and you need to just check the flame when you adjust the heat at all.

And, the best thing? 'Remove from heat' doesn't mean having to find a cool surface to put the pan on, like it does with an electric stove. It just means turning the gas off, preserving precious counter space for other stuff. :)
From: [info]cellio
Date: 6/11/2003 10:46:02 AM

I second the endorsement of Calphalon. We don't have much yet, but what we have is wonderful and I'm looking forward to acquiring more.
From: [info]jacquez

My current favorite Calphalon line is Professional Nonstick II. I like glass lids so I can see what's going on in the pot without taking them off, and they're a nice tough astoundingly-easy-to-clean nonstick surface. They had a discontinued line that my big chef's pan was from, and I miss that line. Can't remember the name. Professional Nonstick II has a very similar chef's pan, though - the handle is different, but it's otherwise the same.

It looks like they have a new glass-lid line coming out, though - the Contemporary Nonstick. I'll have to get some pieces from that and see what I think of it.

And good-quality nylon utensils! Get good nylon utensils for some of these things. I use wooden spoons mostly, but for some stuff you need other devices, and nylon is your friend.

Holy crap, it IS expensive! Those prices are truly shocking to a girl who's only shopped for this kind of stuff at Target.

I guess I should make a list of the things that I might possibly cook, and then figure out which pots/pans I'd need to match? Right now I have a big dutch oven (for hard-boiling eggs), a medium/large pot (for spaghetti) and a small pot (I don't know what it's for), and a cheap no-name frying pan (for latkes). Surely I want to make more stuff than that, though.

I need "Cooking Stuff for Dummies"...

Oh, and of course you don't need to wait for the stove to heat up, or for the burner to cool when you adjust the heat, and I've found it much more difficult to burn myself on a gas stove (still possible, but a lot harder).

how do you make pasta in the microwave?
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 6/11/2003 11:40:53 AM

It's easy! I use a big Pyrex-type bowl, put the water in, set the microwave for 10-15 minutes (depending on how much I'm making/how big the bowl is). When it's done, it should be boiling, so I throw in the pasta and just cook it for whatever the package says, or a few minutes longer (I like my pasta soft).

Kraft Mac & Cheese has no-drain microwave instructions; that works really well too.

From: [info]purple_stardust

Okay, not to sound like a 'tard, but what is the difference between a saltwater tank and a reef tank? I thought the two terms were interchangable...
From: [info]angel_renewed
Date: 6/11/2003 4:50:18 PM

Re:

When dealing with saltwater tanks, you have 2 options.

1. Fish Only (this is what I will have)
2. Reef Tank (invertebrate tank that may - or may not - have fish)

Fish can live and thrive in fairly basic tanks - you need filtration and reasonable light. Fish (most of 'em) are more tolerant of nitrates, temperature changes and such.

Invertebrates (corals, anemones, etc) require an expensive light system (Metal Halide or VHO), very careful monitoring of the water quality and all sorts of other crap.

From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 6/11/2003 8:51:17 PM

Ohhh. Gotcha, thanks. Yeah, that's what I want, too - I want an anemone, a percula clown, and a cleaner shrimp - just a little square foot or two of ocean. So yours won't have ANY inverts? Will you still need to use the live rock and sand?
From: [info]angel_renewed
Date: 6/11/2003 10:16:53 PM

Re:

Anemone's are inverts. And a pain in the ass to keep. Except for Condys, but condys are deadly to clownfish.

I'm using live sand, but not rock.

I washed last night's dishes - I'm getting really good about that! - and then spent most the day doing laundry. We have TONS of dirty laundry, mostly because I hated going to the laundromat so much, so I used to just buy new clothes instead of washing the old ones, and of course then ended up with mountains of old clothes and new clothes, in many different sizes, and all dirty. So anyway, I'm working on washing all that, and weeding though and getting rid of a lot of it.

Sarah and I took a walk to the drugstore this morning, where I bought a big box of crayons and a sharpener, because I want to make pink and purple waxpaper hearts for her bedroom window.

I also bought a Lóreal Feria highlighting kit, since the last time I did highlights, they turned out far more natural-looking than I'd hoped. What I want are big chunks of very pale blonde, which I can later dye purple. This kit came with a cool streaking wand, which I hope I can use for the purple, too - it's a lot more convenient than that retarded holy-cap-and-crochet-hook method. I also bought a packet of deep conditioning goo and a shower cap, just in case I really fry it.

I started to make deviled egg stuff, and then realised that I'd forgotten to buy mayo. Duh. So I called Rusty and asked him to pick some up on his way home from work.

G-d, what an exciting life I lead.

Rats are AWESOME. If you ever kept hamsters or guinea pigs or other "pocket pets", rats are like, a gazillion times cooler than that. They're a lot more interactive, and much sweeter. They're also usually WAY cleaner than other caged pets, esp females. That being said, you do still need to think about whether they're right for you.

Your girlfriend shouldn't be much of a problem - a lot of people think think they don't like rats, but completely change their minds when they actually meet some. Unfotunately, the media (and movies like Willard) haven't done much to help. I have taken my rats to vet clinics and other places, and usually people say "oh that's so cute... what is it?". They're shocked to find out that it's a rat.

The dogs, it depends. It depends on where you'd keep the rats, and it depends on the dogs. I have two dogs (and several cats!), and they couldn't give a rat's ass (so to speak) what's in those cages. I wouldn't leave them together unsupervised, but unless you have breeds of dogs that are specifically bred to find and kill rats (like some of the terrier breeds), then I wouldn't worry too much about it.

If you had an out-of-the-way place to keep the rats at first (someplace you go often, but that the dogs don't and the girlfriend doesn't have to), that would be ideal - while the household adjusts to the rats and vice verse.

If you have any other questions, let me know! :)

Re:

well i had hamsters as a child. i must say they were cute...at the time. i'm much more into the semi-intelligent pet, and hamsters are just *dumb* ;)

i'm worried about the dogs [5 chihuahuas]. they're very aggressive b/c of their small size, and i'm sure they'd be more violent than i've ever known them. maybe i'm wrong. but if it's essential to really let these rats out and explore, i don't know that my particular household can provide that.

hmmm...other questions... are they nocturnal? do they nuzzle/cuddle [i have friends with sugar gliders that are known to do this]? is it mistreatful to keep them primarily caged?

Rats are crepuscular - most active in the evening and early night.

They are VERY cuddley - most of mine are downright attention mongers, and clamor to get out of the cage and on to ME. Most of them give me "kisses", and some of them will actually stick their heads in my mouth. Yeah, they're pretty affectionate. :)

They definately should have some "out" time, but they don't need to (and shouldn't anyway!) be allowed to explore the whole house. One room - even a bathroom - is fine. I don't know if your dogs have access to all rooms, but if there was one room where they could run around, that would work.

Yes, you. :)

Congratulations! PEWs are so cool; I had one briefly. Unfortunately he was an actual lab rat, and they don't usually fair well once they get out into the "real" world; since they were never exposed to any bacteria or germs, their little immune systems can't take it. One of these days, I want a petstore (or breeder) PEW...

I actually JUST got my 1st PEW a couple months ago... He's a dumbo boy (the 1st dumbo PEW I've seen in person as funny as that is!) and I found him at Petco (YUCK!!!).

I'm the dog trainer at the local petco so the lady working speciality let me take this boy home at no cost LOL He's a doll and loves being here. A really fun boy to own and of course a 'rare' color for breeders as no one breeds them and you can NEVER find them in dumbo atleast here in the NW!!!

Awww, I always wanted a dumbo PEW! You're right though; breeders never have PEWs here either, everyone does blue and siamese and pearl, but never plain ol' PEW. The closest I've gotten from a breeder is a REW (Roo), but she has a coupla black hairs.

Re:

Hee hee yup! I've been begging for a PEW for YEARS! I almost had one shipped from GA even though she was a triple dilute (which works better in my program) but she wasn't from the best of breeders and couldn't be bred etc so there wasn't a point in shipping a PET cross country LOL She was dwarfed and had other issues...

No one can say I'm not dedicated though LOL

Well, I found recipesource.com, which seems like a nifty site, except, it's written in some other language. I don't know what a ramekin of butter is, I don't know what a tube pan is, and I sure as hell don't know how to clean a freaking fish, much less do I want to rub its cavity(!).

I give up. I'm sticking to mac and cheese.

You don't need to clean fish unless they're whole and have their head, bones, and scales on. (It involves cutting the fish open, removing their intestines and organs, some of the bones, and scraping the scales off, which incidentally is a messy process and I don't recommend it.) Usually when you buy whole fish at the store, they'll clean them for you. If you buy fillets and the like, they're already cleaned.

A ramekin is a kind of small baking dish. A tube pan is a deep cake dish with a tube in the middle, which is used to make things like angel food cake. You'd know what it was if you saw one, you'd say, "Oh, that!"

These sites might help you:

Lots of pictures of foods and tools: http://www.foodsubs.com/

Definitions of different food terms: http://allrecipes.com/encyc

Cooking honestly isn't that hard. As long as you learn some of the terminology, and you have very basic things on hand like measuring cups and spoons, cake pans, baking pans, pots, etc, you can pretty much make most things.

If you want, when I come down to visit we can do some cooking stuff and I can show you different utensils and how they're used and things like that.

Like a bunt (sp?) pan?

I need to go out and buy those basic things - I don't even own measuring spoons. I have a 2-cup measuring cup, but no spoons. I need baking pans and cookie sheets, too. I have pots, but I don't know what they're called or what to do with them, and I hate the Evil Gas Range.

I will go and look at those sites, although I am fairly sure that it's hopeless.

I may suck at cooking, but I am good at dying things. I did another pair of purple Chucks, this pair is slightly darker than the last. I dyed them black first, then bleached them, and then used the purple. I think I like this version better, as they're still true purple, but not quite so bright.

The in-laws gave me a candle last year; hazelnut scent in a little crock. I melted the remaining wax in a pot of boiling water and cleaned it out, and now I have a cute little crock to keep my cooking utensils in, AND a block of hazelnut-scented wax to make more candles with. Hooray!

I need to buy candle wicks. And paper cups.

Delirium!

Delirium, the youngest of The Endless, you are the keeper of insanity, delusion and everything else that's just plain crazy.
You make about as much sense as fish and telephone-flavoured ice cream. You are truly your own person,
and the fact that your eyes don't match, your hair is three different colours,
and you have a floating fish following you doesn't bother you any.
You have a truly unique perspective on the world, and no one else knows what to think about it.

1. Is your hair naturally curly, wavy, or straight? Long or short?

About shoulder-length, naturally wavy/curly.

2. How has your hair changed over your lifetime?

It was very pale blonde when I was a child, but has darkened to a dark ash blonde now.

3. How do your normally wear your hair?

I wash it, and there it is. It has no style, it has no plan, it just hangs there how it wants to hang. Sometimes I pull it back in a ponytail, put it up with chopsticks or a hair fork, or capture my would-be bangs in a little clip. But basically, it just hangs there, looking un-organised.

4. If you could change your hair this minute, what would it look like?

I want long, straight, curly, fuzzy, snaggy, shaggy, ratty, matty, oily, greasy, fleecy, shining, gleaming, streaming, flaxen, waxen, knotted, polka dotted, twisted, beaded, braided, powered, flowered and confettied, bangled, tangled, spangled and spaghettied.

Or, like Debra Messing's hair.

5. Ever had a hair disaster? What happened?

Two words: BAD PERM. Never again.

I got up at the freakin crack of dawn and took Rusty to work so that I could use the car today and go to the assessor's office and the DMV and get the registration renewed on this car.

Except, when I got to the assessor's office, I found it closed, in observance of West Virginia Day. WTF? First of all, this wretched bunghole of a state doesn't merit a fucking hour, much less a whole damn day. Secondly, you can bet that the meathead cops were out writing tickets today for people who had dead registrations, whether they could take care of it today or not.

So I went to Kmart instead, and bought more baking stuff. I have cookie sheets now, and wooden spoons, nicer spatulas, a rolling pin, a small hand mixer, and even a few basic ingredients (sugar, flour, shortening). Now I just need the purple Pyrex pie pan...

Rusty got rained out and came home early, and went out to Taco Bell and got us lunch. And then we spent the day together, just lazing around and being silly. Nice. And then this evening, we made peanut butter cookies! They were from a mix, but still... yummy!

Speaking of hair disasters, I've had one. I was attempting chunky blonde highlights (which I planned to later dye purple). Except, the bleach didn't stay in chunks, and now the entire top layer of my hair is a weird brassy blonde, while the bottom layer has remained the original brown colour. I don't know whether to try to dye it back, bleach the rest, or shave it all off.

The good news is, purple streaks can't possibly make it look any worse...

Do you think I would destroy it if I went ahead and bleached the rest now?
From: [info]grimkitten_
Date: 6/22/2003 9:41:50 AM

Nope, just be careful to not re-bleach the already bleached part, unless you want all of it lighter. Your roots usually take WAY less time to bleach out then the rest of your hair.
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 6/22/2003 9:55:17 AM

That's the thing, though - I don't think I CAN bleach the rest without hitting the already bleached part - too much of it has already been done. And parts of it are pale yellow, and some is kinda orange, and some is sort of strawberry blonde, plus the original brown stuff. Do you know Delirium from the Sandman comics? I kinda look like that...

What happens if I bleach it ALL at this point? Would that even it out some, or just make everything worse?
From: [info]grimkitten_
Date: 6/22/2003 12:21:41 PM

Apply the bleach to the end of your hair first (the parts that are not bleached yet), as this part takes a lot longer to bleach out. Keep checking it every couple of minutes until that part of your hair is around the same shade as your roots. When it is about the same shade put the rest of the bleach on your hair, covering all of it and let that sit a few minutes before you rinse it out. You are probably going to get a lot of unevenness anyway but if you put a color over top of it you won't be able to tell.

From: [info]paraxeni
Date: 6/22/2003 10:03:47 AM

Actually that's a really sought after look over here right now, and I'm so not kidding! All the fashion victim types have the top of their hair blonde and they have the underneath dyed black or very dark brown. I tried to dye mine bright blue the other week, which involved bleaching my hair then overdyeing with the blue. Well the bleach wouldn't work over the old dark blue dye, and the bright blue didn't take at all, so now I have an inch of my natural colour (like a strawberry blonde), then an inch of lighter blonde, which then fades into the navy blue. But there's a twist, because when I bleached over the navy blue it didn't fade that dye, but it's made the hair under the old dye look bright red, it's erm... very 'interesting'! I look like a German Shepherd dog :D

Try and dye over your blonde with purple, then if it looks crap just bleach it all and start over?

I went to the assessor's office and paid our personal property taxes. It truly annoys me that I have to pay money every year for the privilege of owning a car that we already paid for. But anyway. After that, I went to the DMV and got the registration renewed; I made the mistake of trying the drive-thru, which was actually worse than going inside, because the line was long and the air conditioner in the above-mentioned POS-car is broken, so it was hot and miserable.

I called the municipal court and asked if I could re-schedule my hearing; she said I could come in today or Wednesday, instead... so I guess I should go in this evening and get it over with.

When I got home, there was a package waiting for me - my purple Punky Colour!!! They included a little cat pin because I donated to the New England Haven for Animals, as well as a cute Garment District bumper sticker, and a sparkley pink logo sticker that says "Go Punk Yourself".

I called my father and told him that we moved. It was okay; I called him at work, so he was sober. He referred to Rusty as "Whats-his-name" - and the sad thing is, he wasn't even being viscicious, he really couldn't remember. And why would he? I mean, I've only been with Rusty for eight years. That should give everyone an idea of how often I speak to my father.

I really should do something productive, but suddenly I feel very sleepy. I melted a ton of old wax over the weekend, so I really should go make candles, or work on this cross-stich pattern, or at least organise my craft supplies but... *yawn*.

I did laundry all day yesterday, and the dishes are caught up, and so today I want to make things. I don't know what yet, but I have several choices...

There are still a gazillion pounds of wax here, waiting to be made into candles. I really should do this first, just to get rid of all the blocks of wax that are sitting around in the way. Making candles requires the use of the stove, however, and it's supposed to be really hot today.

I want to make a cross stitch insert for Sarah's sippie cup. I found a cute kitty border pattern, and I'm reworking the pattern so that it looks more like our cats. It will be really cute when it's done, and Sarah will love it, but egad, I find cross stitch to be immensely boring.

I need to finish Sarah's wooden blocks, and also a set of wooden "houses" that I'm making for her. I saved the ends of the 2x4s that Jeff cut, sanded and painted them in pastel colours, and now I need to paint doors and windows on them. I'm hoping, when all lined up, they'll have the effect of the Painted Ladies of San Fransisco, or houses in Jerusalem, or something.

And I still need to put a coat of polyurethane on my cigarette pack cell phone cases.

I am seriously lacking in motivation.

Knit! You KNOW you want to learn!

I'm like the drug pusher of knitting.

I'm working on a fuzzy pink seamless change purse, in gorgeous handspun merino wool and mohair.
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 6/25/2003 10:11:02 AM

I DO want to knit... I went to the Walmart in Winchester VA last week, and they had that learn-to-knit kit, but only one, and it had been opened and part of the stuff was missing. So I went to the local Walmart, and they were completely sold out! It must be popular, because there were a TON of the crochet version, but I can't find the knitting one for anything. :\

For future reference - if I ever do find the kit in stock - what size (weight?) yarn should I get to start?
From: [info]blairmaru
Date: 6/25/2003 10:38:31 AM

Do you have a Joanne's Fabric up there? They have a learn to knit kit that comes with the yarn (it's beige, but hey, you're learning).

I would say - start with big needles, like a 10 1/2 and Lion Wool-Ease Thick and Quick, if you can find it. If not, size 8 or so needles with worsted weight, but NOT red heart. that crap is nasty. Caron Simply Soft is a good worsted weight yarn.
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 6/25/2003 10:50:41 AM

We DO have a JoAnns... is their kit as good as Walmarts? I was only trying to get the Walmart one because you recommended it for being easy.

I will write that down, about the needle sizes and yarn types... that's one reason I wanted the Walmart kit, because it came with the needles and everything. I will take the crappy beige for practice, and some purple fuzzy in case I actually figure it out. :)
From: [info]blairmaru
Date: 6/25/2003 12:33:17 PM

it's actually made by Lion, the same company that makes the other one. I think it teaches you to make a hat and scarf.

Re:

The purse decided to turn into a kitty ears baby hat. I couldn't help it, sometimes knitting just does that on it's own. Luckily, I've got several friends who recently had baby girls, so a pink fuzzy kitty ear hat will be welcome.

Because of Peter and his damned purple cat, I have become fixated on getting a GameCube, solely so I can play Animal Crossing. Of course, if anyone has any other game suggestions - I feel kinda silly getting a game system for one game - I'd love to hear them. I like RPGs mostly, and some of the dragon/monster breeding games (like Dragon Warrior Monsters).

I need another video game like I need a hole in the head.

I don't think that GameCube has very many good games, and it's definitely short on RPGs, but the new Zelda game is good, Pikmin is a lot of fun, and Metroid Prime is really fun too. Then there are the SuperMario games, which are okay if you don't mind bright colors and chasing around after stupid princesses.
From: [info]purple_stardust

You like Animal Crossing though, don't you?

Zelda would work. Is Pikmin the Pokemon game? Jamie said there was a good Pokemon game for GC. I've not played any of the Metroid games, but I do like some of the Mario games.

Fortunately, nothing is too bright on my TV - I keep the colour and brightness settings turned way down, otherwise I get migraines from looking at it. =)

Animal Crossing is fun! It gets old after you've played it for several months, and gotten all the house additions and furniture sets, but in the meantime, it's great.

Pikmin is a game about a little space traveller who gets stranded on a strange planet and these native thingies, the Pikmin, help him retrieve pieces of his ship. It's a lot of fun.

Also, GCs are cute and purple, what more motivation do you need? :D

From: [info]the_never

The new Zelda game (Windwaker) is beyond awesome. Noah and I are playing that one. We spent all last Thursday doing it in fact and managed to get pretty far. We think.

Animal Crossing is great- my favorite game, hands down. I've had it about a year. I put it away for around 6 months and picked it up again recently. In fact, I can get you even more hooked. Go to Http://animalcrossingcommunity.com and get an account. We can trade items and stuff (it's done by password, so you don't need to have any kind of network connection for your Gamecube). Also- get Anicro Desapro and design patterns. My username is Skittle if you want to see my patterns. There are all kinds of weird little easter eggs and stuff in that game and that website has all the cool guides up. I like doing 16-bit sprite-type characters for patterns. You can print them out and actually needlepoint them in at the tailorshop. I've done a pirate flag for my island, a fish-scale shirt, several megaman characters, and other assorted creations.

Pikmin is cool, but it's been more of a rental. The way it works is puzzles. Your character can't actually act directly, he can just throw these pikmin guys ata problem. Someof them can swim, some of them can throw bombs, etc, and you have to navigate through a bunch of interesting little puzzles using the right amount of pikmin.

Another great game- and a classic, although it might be a bit Arcade for you: Super Mario Sunshine. Probably my second favorite game, and I recently finished it and got to the very last bit. At least rent it. Blockbuster has this deal where you can spend 20$ and get a pass that allows you to rent any games you want for a month (2 games at a time, just keep trading them in if you want to change them out). I'd definitely try out Super Mario Sunshine. It's the most popular for a reason.

Noah and I have also been playing a load of Warioland lately (it just came out on Wednesday). That game is mad fun. We're somewhere in the fourth world right now.

Other stuff: Well hmm. I have a Gameboy Player on my Gamecube that lets me play my Gameboy carts on there- so my classic RPS (phantasy Star I, II, III) and breeding games (Monster Rancher 2) are all actually Gameboy games that I play on Gamecube.

Other games I have: Mystic Heroes, Sonic Clasic Mega Collection (Nintendo may actually be buying the Sonic character pretty soon and there are rumors of a new Nights Into Dreams game),

From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 6/29/2003 10:46:28 PM

I set up an account at ACC (Starr of Starburg - I'm so original), though I don't understand how we can trade stuff via codes... cool if we can, though! Hopefully I will pick up some good tips there, too...

Sometime, could you please explain to me - in slow motion - what an e-reader does, and what it would do for me. Does it add actual characters to the game, or just a "card" to look at? And what's the deal with Nintendo Pinball? If I got that card, would I actually be able to play Pinball on the GameCube?

I have the GBA and the Gameboy Player; still need the cable to connect GBA and GC. I understand there's an island if I do that...? Where does the island come from?

Other games: irrelevant! Hahahahaha!!! Okay, assuming I ever stop playing AC, I probably *will* get Zelda and Mario Sunshine. Oh, and have you seen Phantasy Star Online? I LOVED PS4, but wasn't too crazy about 1-3... looks like they've had quite an update, though. The Sonic collection looks cool; I will probably get it even though I still have those games for Sega.

Speaking of GB breeding games, do you play Dragon Warrior Monsters? I really like it too.

Re:

Okay- E-Reader. Plugs into the Gameboy. You can actually get a bunch of 8-bit NES games in card form and swipe the cards (it takes 5 cards usually) to put the game onto the Gameboy.

How it works with Animal Crossing: Okay- the Animal Crossing cards can be swiped and they'll give you random stuff. However, you don't need the E-reader for that. If you have the card, it has a code on the back, and you can write a mail, put the code in, and get something that way.

The 8-bit games are also already in Animal-Crossing, you just have to find/unlock them. Once you do, Yes- you can actually play the 8-bit game in Animal Crossing on your Gamecube. I'll hook you up with NES Pinball and Tennis anyhow. At the end of every month Nook has a raffle and he usually has an NES game as one of the prizes (thats how I got Tennis). Noah found Pinball when someone in his town buried it.

Some games are really rare and untradeable (Wario's Woods, Legend of Zelda). But there's a trick to getting Wario's Woods at least.

Most of the Animal-Crossing cards don't have great prizes in them, actually. I got a cello that was pretty cool, though.
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 6/30/2003 12:06:37 AM

Oooh, I will have to get the AC cards, then! I saw some the other day for only a couple of dollars per pack, but I didn't get them since I didn't have the reader.

I would love to have Pinball, thanks! I don't know if I have anything you'd want yet (since you're so far ahead), but if there's anything you're looking for, let me know! I know that the towns vary a bit; I don't know if the contents (fish and insects, etc) do too.

I haven't played Wario's Woods; was that for NES, too?

I made the first batch of candles - hazelnut coffee with cinnamon. They probably smell really good (I wouldn't know), but I don't care for the colour. I was going for a chocolate brown, and they turned out a sort of poopey brown, instead. But I hate all shades of brown, so it's hard for me to judge. And besides, purple coffee-scented candles would have been weird. Anyway.

And I printed out a ton of recipes to try from jewish-food.org - challah, cheese latkes, chicken soup, matzoh balls, sufganiyot, almond cookies. I'm going to attempt the challah this weekend.

I took a nap at 3pm, and woke up at 3:30, craving latkes. So I got up and made latkes; what else could I do. Yummy! Since I had the frying pan out anyway, I browned some turkey burger to use in lasagna later. I have cooked more in the past month, than I have in my entire life. Fear meee.

Speaking of cooking, I saved Mazel some of the raw turkey burger. Her Fuzzy Majesty didn't like it raw, so I actually cooked this tiny bit of meat just for her. She didn't care for it being hot either, so I had to blow on it, piece by piece, and hand-feed it to her. She ate it then, the picky little wench. She is SO spoiled... lucky for her, I'm a sucker.

One of my best friends [info]evildeadgrrl and her bf live up there and we have been talking for years about starting our own graphic design/photography business and it looks like right now would be an excellent time to do that. Plus, it beats staying here and I like the location because it's so close to a few major cities, and a few of my good LJ friends.

Which Temple do you go to? I was searching the web for Temples close to Fairmont. There is one in Morgantown called the 'Tree of Life' congregation, it looks like it's reform. And there are a few things in Uniontown PA, like a JCC and another Temple. How long does it take to get to Baltimore??
From: [info]purple_stardust

That's why I stay here - the actual town sucks, but it's cheap, low-crime, and within an hour or two of some really cool places (DC and Baltimore), plus Philly, Pittsburgh, Delaware, Ocean City MD, and VA Beach are all within 4-5 hours drive.

I go to B'nai Abraham in Hagerstown MD. It's also reform, and so it the other one that's close to me. I have heard that there's a HUGE consevative temple in B'more... which is about 75 miles from me. :)

Re: she's so crafty!

I really like this one: http://recipesource.com/ - it's very well laid out, and you can look at foods by type or by region. Also, this one: http://www.jewish-food.org/catindex.htm is really good for Jewish food.

Baking really isn't as hard as it seems; I actually find it easier than cooking meats and vegetables. I think the trick is finding a good recipe, and then reading through it to make sure you know what they're talking about - I've been known to get partway through a recipe and then wonder what the hell something means.... it works out a lot better if you find out what a term means before you've got a big pile of sticky bread dough in your hands and need to call someone! =)

Re: she's so crafty!

i'll definitely have to check those websites out :D i have a few cookbooks but i really don't know if any of the recipes are good or not since there's hardly any photos & i can't really find anybody that's tried them before. i really want to try making cornish game hens but i HATE cleaning birds but the recipe sounds delicious and it uses my favourite kind of cheese :) (i LOVE cheese. it's the most wonderful thing in the world... after chocolate of course *hehe*)

anyways, i'll look at the websites & if i do decide to try something i'll let you know how it goes or post something about it in my journal :)

I went to the mall this morning, and then stopped at the supermarket and bought more baking stuff: almonds, vanilla extract, more oil and flour - I'm trying to collect the stuff that I often see listed in recipes, so that I will have them on hand for future use. But anyway...

The rest of my day was completely sucked away by Animal Crossing. I finished working for Mr Nook, and now I'm shaking trees and collecting apples and seashells to sell in the store, to pay off my mortgage. I've been stung by bees, twice.

This game is like crack.

So is Animal Crossing a video game or computer game?
I've heard several people talking about it, but haven't been able to figure it out.

It's a video game, for Nintendo GameCube. :)

I got this postcard, which was made the same year that our house was. It's of the main street here, circa 1909, and I love seeing the way the people dressed then. The brick store on the near left corner was called "Harper Whiskey" - it's a drycleaners now. The white building next to it is now a porn store with apartments overhead... in fact, the first place that Rusty and I ever lived together, was in a third floor apartment of that building. Neat, huh?

How cool! And how interesting. Isn't it fun to imagine who lived in your house? Do you have any history on it?
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 6/28/2003 7:53:38 PM

Oh yeah... we're actually only the second family to live here! You remember I talked about the lady who died, who owned the house? Well, before it was hers, it was her parents, and her father's parents are the ones who built it. In fact, her father was born in our bedroom!

There is an older lady who lives next to us; I would like to talk to her some more about the history of the place. She is quite elderly, and she was born in that house, so she has been here for quite a while.

I'd also like to find a photo of our seller's mother. Her name was Gertrude, and her energy (or whatever you want to call it) is still very much present.

I got Rusty sucked into Animal Crossing too. He has his own character now - a dorky boy in purple plaid with viking horns - who lives in my town. We've been collecting seashells and catching bugs all day. I paid off my mortgage and ordered an upgrade to my house.

While Rusty was playing with his character, I baked a batch of almond cookies... tasty!

Edited because I forgot to mention: my father stopped by today... twice. The first time was to see the new place, I guess. The second time was to give my some tomato and bell pepper plants. It was okay, though we'll never be on warm and fuzzy terms. Whatever.

And this evening, I made honey cinnamon raisen bread... delicious, if I do say so myself.

And now we're watching Trading Spaces. Rusty is annoyed by the studly new carpenter, Carter Oosterhouse. I, on the other hand, am enthralled with the guy, which I think may be partly why Rusty is so annoyed. Carter makes for some very good eye candy.

Ah well, time to eat dinner - Domino's, hooray!

It IS a lot like the Sims, though I like it a lot better.

It's for Nintendo GameCube. I don't think there is a version *just* for Gameboy yet, BUT, if you have a Gameboy, there are a lot of extra things that you can do in the game (you can connect the GameCube and the GameBoy).

Presents...!

Okay. I ordered copies of Pinball and Tennis from my catalog. I'm going to start you out on some cheap gifts so you can figure out the whole trade/exchange/code thingy. I'm sending cherries and a coconut. You know how to plant fruit trees, right? Just dig a hole and bury the fruit. Make sure to do it between 6 Am and before 6 PM, don't plant too close to anything else (find a clear spot), and don't run or step on your sapling. Eventually it grows into a tree, and you can shake the fruit and plant more trees and make a little grove. Foreign fruit is worth 500 bells a pop at Nooks.

Go down to Nooks and give him this code:
C h 7 J O f z V o U g M D k
D d H f G g u V f @ K w & E

(let me know if it doesn't work).

Okay- next- the coconut. Coconuts will only grow near the beach. Don't dig the hole in the sand, but instead dig it just beyond the sand in the green area. Follow the same rules as for the cherry tree and you should have a nice little coconut tree. I find that planting flowers around the cocnut tree looks pretty cool too. You can even plant flowers right in the sand.

The coconut:
j z B F u 3 V F j b y C t o
l 3 m J f w T e 8 I 8 v U 7

(thats a lower case l as in lizard in the second line, and an upper case I as in Ice near the end of that same line.)

Let me know if this works. If you have no problems inputting codes we can try the Pinball and Tennis games.

Re: Presents...!

It didn't workfor me; Nook accused me of trying to use someone else's password! I double-checked to make sure that I entered it correctly... is there any benefit to trying at a later date? I found a couple of codes online, too - one that he said was wrong, and one that worked fine (I got a Starman). I don't know what the problem is.

Well, let's try it the other way 'round. Here is an apple:

Re: Presents...!

I'll check the apple when I get home. I have a question though- since both codes failed, I am starting to think maybe I put the wrong characer and town name in. I put in Starr and Starburg. Is that right? Capitalization and extra characters count.

Re: Presents...!

Yeah, that was right... :\ I will try it again just to be sure, but I double-checked both of them before I entered them, and the first one I checked a third time when he said it was wrong and gave me the option of looking again.

I am now the proud owner of a teenaged boy. Thanks for the good wishes... I am a bit horrified by the thought. I wanted to sell him into indentured servitude before it came to this, but his father wouldn't let me. Anyway, I baked a cake for the occasion, my mom came over, he opened presents... the usual birthday stuff. Now he's thinking about what kind of car he plans to get in three years... over my dead body. I am so not ready for this.
