What was in your livejournal last year?
If you've had it more than a year, what was in your livejournal each year on this date?
If you've had it less than a year, what was the first post?

01 Mar 2002

Ack! Now my computer CD player isn't working, which means I have to get up and walk all the way across the room to play a CD. Because, as I said, I am cursed.

Anyway. I went to Walmart tonight. It isn't quite so bad at 1am. I got a cutting mat and some food to put in my new dehydrator (assuming I don't let it sit and rot like I did last time) - I bought bananas, apples, and carrots. I also bought more tuna, as I am determined to make tuna jerky. I also got more aquarium goodies: an algae scraper, aquarium salt, and kits to test ph and ammonia. I still need a backdrop.

And I was spotting all day and now I'm crampy. If it's my period, I'm having 15-day cycles now. My first paranoid thought was pregnancy (implantation spotting) after our giddy post-Olympics sex, but I think (hope!) the timing is wrong. Other than that, I have no idea, but I am really not liking it. And now it's almost 3am and here I still sit, stalling so I don't have to go to bed and lay there wondering what the hell is wrong with me, and with him, and with us.

01 Mar 2003

Rusty and I went to the bank; the weather was crappy last week so I didn't go Thursday or Friday. His check was pretty pathetic because of the missed snow days, so I didn't stop at Petsmart or Target, as my finances are going to be be a juggling act for the next two weeks.

We came home and found that one the cats had knocked the cricket box off of the back of the stove, so now there are who-knows-how-many live crickets loose in my kitchen. I caught a few near the box (it must have happened just before we walked in), and I'm hoping that the kittens caught (and ate) some of them too. And in case anyone wonders why I keep the crickets in the kitchen, it's because they make that horrid cricket noise when they're in the living room and it drives me insane(r). Why won't my retarded gecko just eat the friggen mealworms?

And I cleaned rat cages, which is almost as much fun as it sounds. I really don't like to do it on Saturday, but Rusty is tying up the television (to play his stupid video game) AND my computer (to play this CD), and I was bored. Perhaps when this CD is over, I shall play Truly Awful Music to encourage him to hurry up and turn regular TV back on.

Cut to March 1 2004. I still have my period (wtf?), we're still broke because of the snow, I'm still spending what money we do have on aquarium supplies, and my retarded gecko still won't eat the friggen mealworms! I think there is a rift in my space-time continuum.

I have to drive to Capon Springs WV and pick up my grandmother, drive her back to Virginia, juggle her AND my 3-year-old daughter while I take her in for a doctor's appointment, sit and wait for gawd-only-knows HOW long, then drive her all the way back home, all the while NOT smoking mind you, before coming all the way back here. In a borrowed semi-illegal car.

Because my mother - who would normally be doing this in her newer legal car - is busy spending the day with her new lesbian friends whatever-the-hell-they-are. But I'm not bitter.

EDIT: I was mistaken, my mother went to work today (it's her usual day off), not out with the lesbian posse. Still, her car is legal, and my grandmother's Nissan is not. I won't even get into how I had no idea where this doctor appointment was, and neither did my grandmother.

At least I have the proof of insurance and registration now, so it's only the inspection sticker that's illegal.

Why that background?

It's Gracie, and I think it's an excellent shot, if I do say so myself.

Why is your toolbar where it is?

Because if I move it, it confuses me. I'm old, and set in my ways.

Why the choices on your toolbar are present:

Outlook Express for email, Opera so that I can compulsively check LiveJournal and the RAG forums, a Genesis emulator because I was playing Shining Force last night, Photoshop so I could compress this screen capture, WS_FTP so that I could upload it, and Macromedia Dreamweaver because I have to update a website today. Trillian and Semagic in the tray.

What the desktop icons are:

A mess? Okay, I have the standard My Computer ("Arthur") and Recycle Bin icons, and I have My Documents (called "Stuff"), shortcuts for my most used programs: IrfanView, Photoshop, WS_FTP, Dreamweaver, Opera, and Breeder's Assistant. I also have a folder for things to be copied to CD-R, my digital camera folders, a folder where I back up my journal, and assorted other folders and graphics and documents in progress. Oh, and a random rat pedigree.

We went to one of the other local pet stores to check out their saltwater selection... it sucked. They had a really nice panther grouper (not that we can keep one, but it's still fun to look), but otherwise it was the same old stuff, and not much of that! The livestock didn't look too bad, but they also had alot of aiptasia (bad) anemones growing in their tanks. We weren't impressed.

I did get a bottle of Invertebrate Smorgasbord for the mushrooms, and a pair of plastic tongs for target feeding. Mr Brain, by the way, had a large piece of scallop for breakfast. :)

I know, I think I read they get to be almost 2' long! I guess *some* people have a tank that big, but the store certainly doesn't bother to post that you'll need one. Of course this one was only an inch long, so if someone didn't do their research, *they* wouldn't know what kind of huge fish it was going to be! :(

So I'm watching Judas on ABC. This is why I need cable/satellite, but that's another post.

Anyway, according to the movie - and I don't know because I've never read the New Testament - Jesus knew that he was going to go to Jerusalem, that one of his posse was going to betray him, and that he was going to be tortured and killed. So the question is, if he knew all this, why are people arguing whether it was the Jews or the Romans that killed him? If you know that the train is coming at 12:15, and you go and sit on the railroad tracks at that time, then it's your own damn fault if you get hit by the train! Geez. Christianity, I'll never understand it.

Yeshua actually knew what was going to happen to him if he went into Jerusalem. That is the traditional teaching...yet another facet that grants no validity to the deicide charge.

And they argue that Jesus had to die to save everyone else, yet anti-semitism is in part about attacking the people you think killed your god. WTF? Shouldn't they be grateful? (To the Romans, really, not to us. We didn't do it.)

Okay, I'm curious about 2, if that's okay...

gender determination

shettles theory
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 3/17/2004 12:33:05 AM

Okay, the Shettles Theory is a method of gender determination, which refers to doing what you can to tip the scales to having your preference of a male or female baby. The Shettles method relies on the theory that male sperm are faster but weaker, and girl sperm are slower to get to the prize but sturdier overall. Sooo... basically, if you want to have a male baby, you would want to have sex as close to ovulation as possible, so they can run right up there and do the deed before the girl sperm have time to get there. Having a girl is a bit trickier; you want to have sex as far away from ovulation as possible (but so that conception is still possible, if that makes sense), so that by the time the girl sperms have time to get there, the male sperms will have died off. There are other considerations as well, such as age, diet, and the alkalinity of the, erm, environment. I know it sounds kinda goofy, but I swear it works... Sarah is the first girl in three generations of boys in Rusty's family! :)

From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 3/17/2004 10:59:04 AM

It IS really cool... I swear there's no way I would have had a girl without it. I'd already had two boys, but you'd have to see what I was up against with Rusty's family to really appreciate it... the ONLY females in that family were the wifes... only boys for three generations (four if you counted his brothers' offspring). Which is kinda fun too, because now they look at our daughter like she's a unicorn or something. :}

What are kliban cats?
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 3/17/2004 11:34:47 AM

Kliban Cats were from a series of cartoons drawn by a guy name Bil Kliban. I fell in love with them in the 70's when my mom bought several of his books, including Cat and Never Eat Anything Bigger Than Your Head. She had other stuff with the Kliban Cats too, including a "Love to eat them Mousies" oven mitt, which I commandeered and have to this day. :)

[1] - I would really like to replace my crushed coral substrate with this Seaflor Flamingo Pink Reef sand. However, I hate to cough up the $12 for shipping. The other option is to see if the HomeDepot in Hagerstown has their aragonite play sand in yet, which would work, but would't be nearly as pretty. I think I'll call around and see if I can by any chance find a local source for the Pink Reef stuff (not likely), and then decide. Pinkish sustrate would be uber-cool.

[2] - This poor thing has really taken a beating at the hands (paws?) of my evil kittens. When they're not shredding its leaves, they're dumping the whole thing into the bathtub! I need to prune back the longer pieces, and I think I will give it some vitamin sticks as well, since the weather is getting warmer. I also need to work on the cacti, but that's for another day.

[1] - I drove to Pugh's last night and bought 15 pounds of lovely white sand, which I plan to use to replace my ugly algae-covered crushed coral which my snails won't touch. So now I just need to figure out a solid plan for changing substrate with the least amount of disruption to the tank.

[2] - I'd originally planned to put the crushed coral substrate into plastic disposable cups and leave them in the tank for a while, to keep the beneficial bacteria around until it takes hold in the new sand. Upon further thought, I have decided to put the old substrate into tulle sachets; that way I will still have the beneficial bacteria, but also, the 'pods and worms that live in the sand will be able to escape the tulle and take up residence in the new sand. And also, purple tulle is so much prettier than red plastic. And it matches my live rock. :)

[Current Music |tv - nbc - it's academic]

Today is substrate-changing day! I think I have everything ready: buckets rinsed, all containers set out, tulle cut and rinsed, sand soaked. I should get the card table out of the rat room to use for this, but a) it's big and bulky and I hate to drag it down the staircase, and b) a new table in the room is just asking for interference from the damn cats. Better to use the dining room table, I think, even if I do have to walk (and drip) a bit further. Fortunately, I have newspapers.

I just hope that I've thought of everything; I would hate to get halfway through this and realise that I needed some other vital thing - I don't want the animals to be out of the tank any longer than neccessary. Of course, I'm sure that the most time-consuming part of the operation will be getting the live rock put back the way I want it... I may have to fudge that temporarily, put the livestock back, and then tweak the live rock arrangement.

If you’re gone, maybe it’s time to come home

But I can hardly move."

Rules for Cats to Live By
Compiled by Fuzzy and Missy Neidow

BATHROOMS
Always accompany guests to the bathroom. It is not necessary to do anything. Just sit and stare.

DOORS
Do not allow any closed doors in any room. To get door open, stand on hind legs and hammer with forepaws. Once door is opened, it is not necessary to use it. After you have ordered an "outside" door opened, stand halfway in and out and think about several things. This is particulary important during very cold weather, rain, snow, or mosquitoes.

CHAIRS AND RUGS
If you have to throw up, get to a chair quickly. If you cannot manage in time, get to an Oriental rug. If there is no Oriental rug, shag is good. When throwing up on the carpet, make sure you back up so it is as long as a human's bare foot.

HAMPERING
If one of your humans is engaged in some activity and the other is idle, stay with the busy one. This is called "helping", otherwise known as "hampering". Following are the rules for "hampering"::

1--When supervising cooking, sit just behind the left heel of the cook. You cannot be seen and thereby stand a better chance of being stepped on and then picked up and comforted.

2--For book readers, get in close under the chin, between eyes and book, unless you can lie across the book itself.

3--For paperwork, lie on the work in the most appropriate manner so as to obscure as much of the work as possible or at least pretend to doze, but every so often reach out and slap the pencil or pen.

4--For humans paying bills or working on income taxes or Christmas cards, keep in mind the aim: to hamper!! First, sit on the paper being worked on. When dislodged, watch sadly from the side of the table. When activity proceeds nicely, roll around on the papers, scattering them to the best of your ability. After being removed for the second time, push pens, pencils and erasers off the table, one at a time.

5--When a human is holding the newspaper in front of him/her, be sure to jump on the back of the paper. Humans love to be surprised.

6--When human is working at computer, jump up on desk, walk across keyboard, bat at mouse pointer on screen and then lay in human's lap.

WALKING
As often as possible, dart quickly and as close as possible in front of the human, especially on stairs, when they have something in their arms, in the dark, and when they first get up in the morning. This will help their coordination skills.

BEDTIME
Always sleep on the human at night so he/she cannot move around.

LITTER BOX
When using the litter box, be sure to kick as much litter out of the box as possible. Humans love the feel of kitty litter between their toes.

HIDING
Every now and then, hide in a place where the humans cannot find you. Do not come out for three to four hours under any circumstances. This will cause the humans to panic (which they love) thinking that you have run away or are lost. Once you do come out, the humans will cover you with love and kisses and you will probably get a treat.

ONE LAST THOUGHT
Whenever possible, get close to a human, especially their face, turn around, and present your butt to them. Humans love this, so do it often.

GOD NAMES NEXT "CHOSEN PEOPLE"; IT'S JEWS AGAIN
"Oh Shit," Say Jews

Jerusalem (SatireWire.com) Update — Jews, whose troubled, 10,000-year term as God's "chosen people" finally expired last night, woke up this morning to find that they had once again been hand-picked by the Almighty. Synagogues across the globe declared a day of mourning.

Asked if the descendants of Abraham shouldn't be pleased about being tapped for an unprecedented second term, Jerusalem Rabbi Ben Meyerson shrugged. "Of course, you are right, we should be thrilled," he said. "We should also enjoy a good swift kick in the head, but for some reason, we don't.

"Now don't ask such questions until you watch the news, or read history, or at least rent 'Fiddler on the Roof'."

Much of the world's re-blessed Jewish community shared that feeling. "It's always been considered a joke with us. You know, 'Please G-d, next time choose someone else,' ha ha," said New York City resident David Bashert.

"Ha. Ha ha," Bashert added. "Shit."

According to a worldwide survey of faiths, not a single group expressed an interest in being chosen, and the only application submitted before last night's filing deadline, on behalf of the Islamic people, proved to be a fake.

"Somebody filled out a form and signed our name to it, but I guarantee it wasn't us," said Imam Yusuf Al Muhammed of Medina, Saudi Arabia. "I'm not going to say who it was, but the application was filled out in Hebrew."

"Oh, don't be such a k'vatsh," responded Meyerson. "It's only 10,000 years. Trust me, after a few diaspora, you would have gotten used to the universal hatred thing."

Due to the absence of voluntary candidates, God's Law stipulated that the Almighty had to choose a people at random to serve out the next 10-millenia term. Elias Contreau, director of the International Interfaith Working Group, said he wasn't surprised it came to a blind drawing.

"According to the Bible, God promised to bless Abraham and those who came after him," said Contreau. "Who knows, maybe that sounded good at the time, or maybe 'blessed' meant something different back then, like 'Short periods of prosperity interrupted by insufferable friggin' chaos.' Whatever, I think it's safe to say that people didn't know what they were agreeing to."

Now they do, Contreau added, which he said explains why so many religions had lately been exalting God's existence, but downplaying their own.

"We were not avoiding Him. We just told our parishioners that if Anyone asks, we're out," insisted Archbishop of Canterbury Dr. George Carey, who had called off services during February. "Besides, we weren't the only ones. I didn't see the Hindus raising their hands."

"Now look, it's like we told the ethereal vision who dropped off the application, 'Sure, we have a strong shared faith and all that, but I wouldn't exactly say we're a 'people,' not really,'" recalled Hindu leader Samuldrala Swami Maharaj of Calcutta. "Plus, you know, I told him we had a lot of other commitments. We'd like to help, honestly. Another time, maybe."

In Jerusalem, Jewish leaders said they will propose an amendment to God's Law prohibiting a people from having to serve more than two consecutive terms. "Hopefully, G-d will hear our prayer," said Meyerson. "No, wait, that's what got us into this."

Americans, meanwhile, expressed outrage at the decision, saying they had assumed they were God's chosen people. However, explained Archbishop Carey, "It only seems that way because so many people don't like you."

Topi complained that geminintheruff (or what's her face) deleted his comments. He complained to the WJ mods that it was a form of censorship, so I wanted to let him know where we were on the issue.

Check out WJs -- what do you think of the whole issue?
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 3/24/2004 12:09:58 PM

Hmmm... I didn't realise that regular users COULD delete a comment! Well, I have to agree with you, I think the mods should be contacted instead... otherwise, I could see it getting out of hand, and people deleting comments every time someone disagreed with them. Is there any way to disable the ability to delete relies, or is that part of the LiveJournal system and we just have to ask them to not do it?
From: [info]cecerose
Date: 3/24/2004 12:18:48 PM

It's part of the LJ system -- They could probably disable that function in just the community forums. I think stating it as something we don't encourage is fine.

BTW, we probably should re-vamp the info page or hide a bunch of stuff behind an LJ cut. What do you think?
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 3/24/2004 12:29:55 PM

Definately. We could either make a post with the rules (LJ cut) and then link to the post on the info page, or put the stuff on a web page and link to that. Either way, all that stuff on the info page IS pretty unruly.
From: [info]cecerose
Date: 3/24/2004 12:57:58 PM

I like the first option -- a post with a link to the info page.

Maybe some statement saying that if you become a member of the community, you agree to abide by the rules... And a general statement of philoophy, like "say what you like, just don't be an asshole about it..."
From: [info]purple_stardust
