All we know so far is that it's pressing against the brain stem and causing a lot of problems with vision and coordination. Unfortunately, she is too old and in general poor health for surgery.

Yeah... ALL the stuff she's been having trouble with - the blindness, weakness, dizziness, falling down, confusion - the stuff that she's been complaining about for almost a year now has ALL been caused by this... and they never thought to do a CAT scan until now. And of course now, it's probably too late to do anything about it, she's definately not a safe risk for surgery. Incompetant fucks. :\

After I dropped the boys off at school, I went to Walmart for last-minute ReefCamp supplies, bunny toys, and more RO water... I've gotten 40 of the 65 gallons so far. I picked up the glass canopy and the submersible heater last night, so that's good to go... all I need is the substrate.

What to do today? I'm going to let Bunny out for some play time. I need to work on my jigsaw puzzle so that I can get it off of the dining room table. I want to paint my new cooler purple.

Today is water change day, so I may go ahead and move the Nano-Cube into the dining room so that I can set up the new tank in its spot. That's going to be a royal pain in the ass, but it needs to be done. I still need to call an electrician too, to put in a new outlet for the aquarium. Bah.

We went to visit my grandmother last night. She told us that there were turkeys outside the hospital window and that if she'd had shells for her rifle (which she claimed was above the hospital bed), she would have shot at them. She asked if my father had any yellow squash this year, because she wanted my grandfather (who's been dead for over ten years) to slice it up and dry it. She said she'd been to a store that sold really cheap catfood. Jesus.

We've talked to her neurosurgeon, who says that her chances of surviving surgery are good, but her chances of surviving without it are even worse, so they're going to try to remove the tumour.

Hope I die before I get old.

The vet's office called me this afternoon to tell me that either Mister Bunny has already been neutered (not likely), or he's what they called a "cryptorchid", meaning that his testicles have not yet decended. He suggested that I try back in a few months to see if they've come down, but a) I think they'd be there already if he was going to have some, and b) I hate the idea of trying to deal with an aggressive rabbit in the meantime. It's difficult just to meet his basic needs as he is now, and forget playing with him. I don't know what to do now. :(

Comments:
From: [info]buuunnnnnny
Date: 6/10/2004 4:45:28 PM

I'd ask the vet how old he thinks the rabbit is. If they really should have come down by now, the vet should actually do something about it. If not, leave the rabbit alone so he calms down a little. I'm sure he's also struggling to adjust to his new home. I brought Molly home almost four months ago, and she's STILL not acclimated all the way.
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 6/10/2004 6:58:59 PM

Erick said he looks to be about a year old. He didn't cut him open, but he said they should have come down when he relaxed from the anesthesia, and he felt around and couldn't feel them inside, either. He's going to an exotics conference next week, so he said he'd ask them about experiences with chemical castration and other options, and otherwise I should bring him back in two month and see if they've come down them. :\

Er... is this vet very experienced with neutering exotics/small animals? Because, from what you've said about the bunny, I find this really weird. Being cryptorchid is a birth defect, and if the testicles aren't descended by the time he's a year old, they're not GOING to descend. He needs to have an abdominal surgery in order to locate the testicles and take them out. =\

Mister Bunny's also going to be more prone to testicular cancer if the vet doesn't get that stuff out of there.
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 6/11/2004 6:57:07 AM

Right... yeah, he said we'd go in after 'em if neccessary, I think he just wanted to be sure he wasn't already neutered before he goes in abdominally. Usually bunnies can be neutered through the scrotum (like rats), but not if the nuts aren't where they're supposed to be, obviously.

*I* think that given the his behaviour, his nuts are definately SOMEWHERE reaking havoc, but perhaps I did not adequately convey the psycoticness behaviour to Erick.

We left Friday morning, and arrived in Crossville TN that evening. After we'd set up our tent and met everyone, we all sat around drinking and getting to know each other. Besides Vern and Val, there was Rick and Sharon, Matt and Mell, Jim and Patty, Ron and Sarah, and Brad. We all oohed and ahhed at Vern and Val's 180 gallon reef, and met their donkey and billy goats.

Saturday, Jared showed up, and Daniel, who was very sweet. Val and Vern took the kids (and a couple of adults!) on donkey rides, and we spent most of the day just hanging out and avoiding the pouring rain and the glaring sun (it was always one or the other). That evening we had a big cookout and more alcohol and general bullshitting. There were also prizes, donated by some of the RAG sponsers. I won two bottles of additives, and Rusty got a big book about marine fishes.

On Sunday, we drove to Gatlinburg to Ripleys Aquarium of the Smokies - very cool, and I got a ton of souveniers. After that, we ate (and drank) at the Hard Rock Cafe, which was hideously overpriced, but I got to sit near Johnny Cash's guitar, so that was pretty cool. Afterwards, we walked around and shopped for a bit, but Sarah was getting cranky, so we took her on a trolley ride around Gatlinburg and then headed back to camp for more drinking and bullshitting.

We left Monday morning, after serious frag action. Val and Vern gave me a piece of nepthea, pink zoanthids, green star polyps, and some amazing pink-tipped frogspawn. Rick and Sharon brought me some nice purple mushrooms, Brad gave me green zoanthids, and Ron gave me a big devils hand leather and some brown zoanthids. I also got cabbage coral, xenia, and a couple of other pieces of unknow origin, plus a big handful of macro algae and a "hairy" snail from Val.

The drive home was insanely long (bad weather and a couple of accidents slowed things down considerably), but we finally arrived home a bit after midnight. We had a lot of fun, but it's good to be home. I need to attach my new frags today, as well as unpack the car. Wheee!

My mom brought her laptop over to me yesterday; it's gone bonky and she expects me to fix it.

And I need to get the new aquarium set up; I still need to adjust the filter, install the heater, and set up the lights and powerheads. I also need to drag all the live rock back out and put it into tubs, add another 100 pounds of sand, and then put the rock back in an orderly fashion.

Of course, there's also a matter of the living room; I still need to put our CDs back on the shelves abd finish re-arranging the furniture and move the speakers back to their rightful places. And I need to unpack our stuff from Reef Camp and clean and fold my dad's tent.

But I bought Shining Force for GBA last night, and I just don't see how I can be expected to concentrate on fixing laptops and setting up aquariums, when the hoards of Runefaust are lurking about! Sure, I bet Darksol would love to take over the place while I'm busy installing Windows! In fact, I would be willing to bet that Darksol and Bill Gates are working together...

My grandmother made it through surgery, amazingly. They didn't get all of the tumour (nor did they really expect to), and it will only give her a few more months, but she wanted to do it. So now we wait... they said the first 72 hours are critical, and we should know more after that.

In other news, I bought a new cell phone today; an adorable little Samsung VI660 (for Sprint PCS). So far I really love it; I just hope it doesn't have the battery issues that the last one did.

You know, with that dewlap, your bun-bun looks like a girl! Are you CERTAIN it's a boy? Most boys don't really have dewlaps....
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 6/23/2004 12:25:51 PM

a) What's a dewlap?

b) The store said he was, but I never looked. I did take him to the vet, and the vet did not see any testicles, but he didn't say it was a girl, either.

c) Would a girl be so territorial and cranky? I assumed his behavour issues were mostly testosterone-driven...
From: [info]buuunnnnnny
Date: 6/23/2004 1:07:31 PM

The dewlap is that little roll of chub under a bunny's chin. Girls have them because it's where they rip out fur to build a nest (extra surface area to grow fur, maybe, or just because it's easy to reach).

Unspayed girls can DEFINITELY be extremely agressive and territorial. My girl was rather hostile before her spay. (Behavior aside, it's also very important to spay girls b/c rabbits are very prone to female cancers.)

Try to get a peek at your bunny's privates. It's sort of hard to tell, but generally, if you see a circle, it's a boy and if you see a line (slit), it's a girl.
From: [info]purple_stardust
Date: 6/23/2004 1:19:39 PM

The dewlap is that little roll of chub under a bunny's chin.

I should have known that, I have one of those too. ;)

Well, (s)he is DEFINATELY aggressive and territorial. I read (after asking you that question) that they can be especially territorial in their cage because they think they're defending their "nest". That's where we have most of our issues, so that makes sense, though (s)he has bitten Rusty twice while out of the cage.

What is the best way to look, hold the bunny out (like a baby who needs a diaper) or upside down on your lap, or what? I'm thinking, the bunny wants to bite me when I FEED her, I can't imagine what she'll do to me if I try this...

If s/he's very agressive to the point of biting, try rolling her up in a towel up to his/her neck, also covering the front legs. That way s/he can't really lunge up to bite you. After wrapping the bunny, lay him/her on your lap on his/her back (in the "groove" of your legs probably works best), and take a peek that way -- that's probably the easiest.

You *so* need a rabbit Bunnicula. And you need to teach him to drink V-8.

And this stands even if Bunnicula turns out to be a girl.

You know, as soon as [info]buuunnnnnny said that, I thought, hmmm, maybe Moshe isn't such a good idea. Bunnicula, however, seems quite appropriate AND gender-neutral. Now if I could just get him/her to prefer V-8 instead of human blood...

As I recall, Bunnicula was known for sucking the 'blood' out of vegetables. So I don't think you have to worry about the human blood.

My mother called this morning to tell me that my grandmother is deteriorating rapidly and probably won't live through the weekend, so I guess we're going to visit her this evening. I would so rather have my spleen ripped out by radioactive weasels.

Yes, new cats. We're inheriting my grandmother's two cats, a monster black long-hair named Mandy (a confused male) and a gorgeous red tabby called Marmalade (very original, I know). My original cats will be none too thrilled with this developement, but they'll get over it.

And thank you all for the condolances. I'm actually relieved that she's finally "at peace; I just wish she could have gone home to do it. I'm still a tad bitter that the doctors, in their infinate wisdom (that's sarcasm, in case you missed it), decided to do risky brain surgery on an elderly woman. Yes, she said she wanted it, but she also said she was going to get her dead husband to cut up yellow squash, so I'm not sure she really should have gotten a vote. Bah.
